as if one sick thread title in the news topic wasn'y enouth. now there is another on the same subject.

OP posts:
ChirpyGirl · 23/06/2008 19:11

It would help if we could block threads without having to open them, as then you see the first post and end up scanning it anyway.

And I have to agree, a shorter title with bare bones would have been better, people should have the same consideration most use with not swearing in titles.

TheArmadillo · 23/06/2008 19:11

IT's the thread titles that are a prob rather than people discussing it - if they could just put 'very distressing/disturbing story' or summat.

The problem with hiding the threads is that you have to read the titles first. Also I don't want to hide the entire 'In the News' thread as there is stuff I want to discuss on there. Stuff like 'David Davis resigns' isn't going to have the same disturbing effect as ''.

It's not about stopping people discussing them, or putting them on MN, but just putting all the details in the thread titles.

It also affects the OP as the thread will be mostly full of people telling them what a horrible thread title it is and the thread dies with no real discussion.

Can we not just have a policy where horrific stories have a warning for a title? People can still discuss it, but those who don't wish to see the full details don't have it thrust upon them.

fryalot · 23/06/2008 19:15

I agree with franny - if people feel the need to discuss this kind of story, a thread title that warns people of the content of the thread rather than a really explicit title that leaves nobody in any doubt is the way to go.

Unfortunately, I suspect that the kind of people who are the most likely to want to discuss these kind of news stories are also the kind of people who are less sensitive to the wishes of others.

Perhaps I'm wrong.

Rosevie · 23/06/2008 19:43

There is no wider public debate to be gained from these threads except to show the depravity of the human race.

Let's hope everyone continues to ignore the second one.

OverMyDeadBody · 23/06/2008 19:53

I agree completely rosevie. Completely pointless.

Hulababy · 23/06/2008 19:57

I really don't want to have to read such graphic headlines on MN threads. It is very easy to not enter such a title; just write something less graphic - and you can expand if you really feel the need inside.

My 6y can read these thread titles and MN is often on my computer screen. So to me it is important that such things don't appear.

Yes, I can hide them if I see them, but that may not be quick enough. And I really don't wnt to have to read it in the first place anyway.

\i don't see why it is necessary to include graphic thread titles. Wish MN were able to have then edited.

Hulababy · 23/06/2008 19:58

Oh and agree with later comments - no problem with the threads existing, but do have a problem with the thread titles themselves.

LyraSilvertongue · 23/06/2008 20:01

I made the mistake of posting on it and now it's stuck on threads I'm on. Gah!

fryalot · 23/06/2008 20:02

lyra - you'll just have to post on as many other threads as you possibly can, till it sinks away, never to be seen again...

bundle · 23/06/2008 20:02

eh? (missed it again emoticon)

CatIsSleepy · 23/06/2008 20:02

me too Lyra
am an eejit
it's utterly gruesome and pointless

Booboobedoo · 23/06/2008 20:05

Agree 2shoes. It was the first thing I saw when I opened MN this evening, and now I have apalling images in my head.

If I were reading a paper or watching the news I would at least approach them knowing I may see/read something distressing.

I do think it would be a good idea to have at least some guidance for the creation of thread titles.

southeastastra · 23/06/2008 20:05

have to say the thread titles don't bother me that much, but know i'm in the minority

CodGuevara · 23/06/2008 20:07

who were the ops

let us GET em

theyoungvisiter · 23/06/2008 20:10

I've posted about this before but not sure anyone at MN HQ saw it - but could we have the option to hide threads in all topics - not just in active convos?

It would be useful to be able to hide threads once and for all.

Obviously would save people seeing stuff like this in the news topic when they've already hidden it in active convos, but the original reason I asked is because I find it's grim when you post early on a thread and then it takes a really nasty, spiteful turn and you have all the bitter responses flashing up on "threads I'm on" endlessly.

JustineMumsnet · 23/06/2008 20:48

It's a good idea TYV though before we commit to it, I need to check out with Techs how hard it would be. Will revert.

BetteNoire · 23/06/2008 21:02

I don't want to be sheltered from any news story.
It's the salaciousness of some of the titles that riles me.

filthymindedbolshevixen · 23/06/2008 21:03

my thoughts exactly BN

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/06/2008 21:05

It is very hard to govern what titles people will find offensive / inoffensive.

Some people find "I have an itchy fanjo, what should I use" offensive...

I do think that there are some good discussions that come out of the In The News section. I know the MM threads kicked off, but there were some good comments made on them. Some people like to discuss the items are are in the news, rightly or wrongly (that they're in the news, not that people wish to discuss). Some people dont. Maybe there should be a "current affairs" or "politics" topics, to separate out the general "news"?

I dont hide any topics, I just skim the titles in the active convs and nothing really sinks in unless I'm drawn to open it. I think I have a low sponge brain though, which might explain my lack of knowledge on the topic I am studying, that and my fascination with mumsnet!

Elf, I think it's a fair assumption that the vast majority of people will find a thread title including details of skinned and cannibalised children offensive.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/06/2008 21:21

Yes but I have also seen some threads kick off in the news section which I thought were quite fair titles.
Also, not everybody has been here a long time, and knows how bad threads can get when the wrong words are chosen in the title.

2shoes · 23/06/2008 21:25

i agree (I have had that happen in chat it is not a nice thing) but this is different as there is no need to be so graphic in the title, it is just sick.

OP posts:
ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/06/2008 21:49

I think that now that you can hide topics, a lot of things get dumped in "chat" because you get a wider audience for it iyswim.

I tend to keep up with news through mumsnet or teletext, and I have Breakfast on whilst I'm getting ready in the week. With teletext, (and having Yahoo as a homepage etc) you tend to get a sensational headline, so that could be why the threads dont rile me too much - I kind of read and dont diget iyswim.

I think it's been deleted.
