as if one sick thread title in the news topic wasn'y enouth. now there is another on the same subject.

2shoes- it would be nice to be able to hide threads without having to open them first, wouldn't it.

orangehead · 23/06/2008 18:09

Why dont you hide the new threads

2shoes · 23/06/2008 18:12

I have hidden them but that onlty hides them in active convos. I find the news topic interesting.
I started a thread last night and it is something I want to read(i need to learn) but for some reason people can't start a thread with a subtle title.

I really can not believe I am alone on this one.

OP posts:
ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/06/2008 18:13

tis no different to reading the headlines in the papers/ watching the headlines on the news imo

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 23/06/2008 18:14

(though I have seen the threads in question, saw the 2nd and thought "I bet this kicks off"!)

Carmenere · 23/06/2008 18:16

the only thing you can do 2shoes is to keep to active convos, you have my sympathies though as I hate seeing it too and it is not quite the same as reading news headlines imo, as you generally have to seek out news headlines.

2shoes · 23/06/2008 18:17

i don't read papers that have those kind of headlines. stopped reading the sun when I grew up.
surely 2 threads is just taking the piss.

OP posts:
OverMyDeadBody · 23/06/2008 18:20

why do people even want to discuss it though?! It's horrible, and why the need for such horrible thread titles?

OverMyDeadBody · 23/06/2008 18:21

I don't read the papers either or watch the news. What's the point exactly?

I completely agree. It's like having the Sun front page pasted to your screen for a couple of days - revoltingly salacious and gossipy titles. I haven't read either thread - turns my stomach just thinking about it.

I completely, totally agree.

In the defence of the second thread-starter, perhaps she didn't know how to use the search function and assumed she was the first? maybe? I dunno?

But yes, twould be very nice not to have to open the thread first.

And a word about discreet thread titles wouldn't go amiss either.

wannaBe · 23/06/2008 18:34

if it's the thread I'm thinking about, I have no idea why the media even needs to be reporting on it. Those responsible are being brought to justice through the legal channels, so why does the public, especially those in other countries, need to be told about it?

lazarou · 23/06/2008 18:51

I've hidden the news section, but idle curiosity got the better of me and I had to look.
I don't know why people want to discuss those stories.

lexilex · 23/06/2008 18:57

im sorry but if you are interested in the news you have to be prepared to hear about or read things that are not very nice, the world is full of horrible things happening everyday and there is nothing anyone can do, you cant expect the in the news forum to be full of nicey nicey crap, seen as its there for people to talk about what happening in the news!

2shoes · 23/06/2008 19:01

yes to and extent. bu come on. the titles are horrid. I do not choose to read about stuff like that(who would) yet I can't miss it when all the shitty details are in the title.
maybe we need a topic for horror threads.

OP posts:
TheArmadillo · 23/06/2008 19:02

There is a difference between having a thread in the news topic and talking about it and having the full horrifc story displayed in front of you whether you want to see it or not.

If it's the story I am thinking about (really don't want to go and check) then what do you get from discussing it? Some kind of thrill. It is horrific, it is disturbing and it is a rare occurance - not something happening daily that we can try and prevent.

WHoever posted them had the choice as to whether they read it and whether they discussed it - surely you can show the same courtesy towards others?

lazarou · 23/06/2008 19:04

It's not about being prepared to read nasty stuff, it's people positively salivating over gruesome events.

And tbh, I would rather read a 'nicey-nicey' story worthy of news, rather than macabre details of some poor persons life.

2shoes · 23/06/2008 19:05

or just do a simple tilte with a warning. then people will have a chice.

OP posts:
BeauLocks · 23/06/2008 19:05

Blimey. Went to have a look at the In The News topic and it seems to have got even worse since I blocked the whole section.

The stories are bad and the thread titles often seem to be paricularly grim.

FrannyandZooey · 23/06/2008 19:06

yes talk about as much horror torture and death as you like
but spare the rest of us the details in your revolting gloating titles
it's really repulsive

JustineMumsnet · 23/06/2008 19:06

It's tricky. We do understand your distress (and we did introduce the hide option for that reason) but equally as a principle we don't really like to delete things purely on the grounds of offensiveness - not least because we'd find it hard to know where to draw the line.
We did actually change the title of the first thread after a number of folk complained but has been said all this stuff is In the News (rightly or wrongly) so it seems wrong to disallow it on MN's In the News topic.

We did have the hide option on the thread titles in active conversations but removed it because folk complained (rightly) that it made the active conversations page look a mess/cluttered.

Do continue to let us know your thoughts.

FrannyandZooey · 23/06/2008 19:08

my thoughts are that you should not have to do anything about this Justine because people should have some basic decency

Carmenere · 23/06/2008 19:08

Lexiflex, I think you will find that pretty much none of the posters on this thread are the type that want to be sheltered from the reality of life. I choose to hide those thread titles because I have already absorbed the horror of the 'story' through my chosen news media. I don't want to be reminded of it when I am having down time, this is, iirc, one of the reasons the hide facility was introduced to the site.
