Personal attacks

Hi Mumsnet,

Just curious. When someone reports a personal attack and you agree and then remove said post, do you contact the person who posted it to say stop doing this etc or just delete said message and hope they get the message?

Usually they just remove it.

Pity. Would be good if they told that person their behaviour was unacceptable.

I had a post removed from the Trump thread. It was about Iran and I think it was removed because I described the Iranian hold over the Straits as a hold that could be used to hurt or kill a woman, sometimes during sex.

For obvious reasons I cannot repeat the actual wording here.

I had no message from this site to tell me why my post had been removed, I had to make an assumption.

Pretty poor in my opinion.

Mine was an actual personal attack. Called a troll and then she was very rude about me. Just so uncalled for. I am all for debate and back and forth, this is the internet after all, but what she said was completely unacceptable to me.

There is a reason for talk guidelines. It’s a list of reasons. I can’t imagine how long it would take for moderators to go around telling everyone which guideline they broke. I suspect they remove a sizeable number of comments and threads a day. Also, personal attacks will be interpreted in different ways so you can’t get someone to explain on your behalf how that would have made you feel.

Hi @GeorgeMichaelsCat

Thanks for getting in touch.
We do contact posters - quite often, too.

We don't usually share when we take further action behind the scenes, but can assure you that if the pattern were to continue after we've emailed posters, we would then issue suspensions.

Joolay · 05/06/2026 20:47

I got banned for awhile for saying quite reasonable stuff like "you're being weird@
", that was deemed a personal attack

Joolay · 05/06/2026 20:47

(They were being really weird)

Thanks Lily. Usually I am fine with these things but what that person said rather bruised me. It was just plain nasty.

Why do you care? If they're a knobhead on the internet who doesn't even know you then why on earth would you give even a second thought to what they had said about you?

Because it was that nasty

@GeorgeMichaelsCat I would imagine that they delete personal attacks when they're reported but don't say anything to that poster every time. As a pp said, it's untenable for Mumsnet to contact every poster after every single reported post/deleted post.

However, as @LilyMumsnet said, if it's a repeat offender and someone keeps saying nasty things/calling people a troll/saying the thread content is fake and the OP is a liar and so on, then they will have a word with the poster.

I'm sorry you were attacked. Flowers You have every right to be upset by it, despite the comments saying 'why do you care what some random on the internet says?'

They don’t know you though. I don’t take the words of someone who has never met me seriously, I just disregard them as the ramblings of an idiot!

TheWineoftheChicken · 06/06/2026 12:47

Plus if they’re as awful as you say, being told they’re awful by MN isn’t going to make much of a difference

I am not you though. Most things don't penetrate my armour but this did upset me. I wish I was more like you. Alas I am not.
