Horrifically sexist Fisher Price advert on Mumsnet

I am so fed up of seeing, on Mumsnet of all places, the horrifically sexist Fisher Price ad for a toy vacuum/duster.

A little girl is playing with the vacuum, pretending to vacuum the carpet, then she does play dusting with the duster that is part of the toy.

She is cleaning things! Like females are supposed to do! And then she has a lovely cuddle with her mother.

Because yes, that's what females do. Clean things, and congratulate their daughters for learning how to clean things!!

🙄

My girls loved these toys
My boys didn’t
I didn’t go too deep with it
So this advert reflects what was my reality and really that is all an ad can hope to achieve - touch on the reality for some

ProudAmberTurtle · 03/04/2026 14:16

Just use one of the browsers that block all adverts like the Brave browser. No adverts on Mumsnet or anywhere else - including YouTube. Job done

Nope. The adverts could encourage children of both sexes to play with any toy. That’s a win for them.

OneTimeThingToday · 03/04/2026 14:19

I was more horrified by the toy "Influencer" set i saw advertised in Argos.

Maybe Fisher Price are aware that boys tend not to want to play with their vacuum cleaner toys and that's why they don't market them to them?

Total rubbish plenty of boys want to play with them.
Usually the boys who've observed their dad pushing the hoover around.

If only your daughters are interested in this stuff and not your sons that's a reflection of who does those tasks in your house and the stereotype you are quietly propagating yourselves.

The role of marketing departments isn’t to raise kids.

That is the job of the parents

All 3 of my boys loved playing with toy vacuum cleaners and a cleaning trolley at nursery so we bought a set at home too. They all loved them.

Why do you think Fisher Price are marketing only to girls then, when they could double their customer base?

OneTimeThingToday · 03/04/2026 14:25

If you look at toy hoovers in toy shops... they do have bothboys and girls on them

Not in this advert, currently showing on Mumsnet. It's just females concerned with cleaning.

Really thought such sexist tropes were done with now. Very disappointed to see it on Mumsnet, of all places.

From the age of 4 my son wanted to wield the (actual, not toy) vacuum cleaner. He thought it was fun and liked the noise.

You do realise sexist adverts can get banned for freaking advertising guidelines?

An advert showing a little girl cleaning is sexist. Boys enjoy playing with those toys too, so why not show both? Especially given the rise of young men wanting or expecting “Trad Wives”…. And a number of young women buying into that too. Nothing to do with parenting - it’s the messages being received from the world around them.

Growlybear83 · 03/04/2026 14:27

I think ‘horrifically sexist’ is a bit over the top! I doubt that most people would give a toss about an advert like this 🤣🤣

Tichter · 03/04/2026 14:28

I bought a kitchen unit for my son when he was three (and also a buggy/stroller). On Christmas morning his eyes lit up when I went through the features: the hob with real sizzle sounds, the microwave, the oven, the sink etc. He then ran off, got his toy cars and used the unit as a garage by placing cars in all the spaces. Stroller was used to transport cars as well. 🤷‍♀️

Well I do. You clearly haven't considered the sexist, societal ramifications.

Only horrifically sexist if it says girls only.

The advert only involves a girl, and a woman.

Out of genuine curiosity, do you find men LARPing as women and then getting roles reserved for women, because they are transgender, horrifically sexist OP?

No, because they're not women. You might want to look up my posting history 😆

That’s not true. I worked in education for many years, in EYFS, so working with 3/4/5 year olds. Boys choose to play with those type of items as much as girls.
