Horrifically sexist Fisher Price advert on Mumsnet

I am so fed up of seeing, on Mumsnet of all places, the horrifically sexist Fisher Price ad for a toy vacuum/duster.

A little girl is playing with the vacuum, pretending to vacuum the carpet, then she does play dusting with the duster that is part of the toy.

She is cleaning things! Like females are supposed to do! And then she has a lovely cuddle with her mother.

Because yes, that's what females do. Clean things, and congratulate their daughters for learning how to clean things!!

🙄

FP Static advertising includes a boy so hopefully that gets your BP down a bit

That doesn’t fit in with OPs agenda though.

That doesn’t fit in with OPs agenda though.

My "agenda" is with the advert. And the linked toy is not even the toy being advertised.

Maybe Fisher Price are aware that boys tend not to want to play with their vacuum cleaner toys and that's why they don't market them to them?

My boys loved theirs- and their kitchen and ironing board! 😁

Chagula · 03/04/2026 14:35

That is not the same toy.

It’s still a toy vacuum though isn’t it and a boy playing with it, which means your bait post is irrelevant

JaneyDC · 03/04/2026 14:38

My daughter (1) is obsessed with the dyson so we got her a toy one for Christmas. She absolutely loves vacuuming when I do.
Today, she saw me sweeping up the sand outside and immediately wanted to do it. I am now thinking of getting her a toy sweep/cleaning set for her birthday next week.
I stopped to ask - is this sexist? Is this how it starts?! Then I reminded myself that she's only one and just wants to copy mummy. I'm not going to ruin her chances of a high flying (possibly male orientated?) career cos I bought her a broom.

Funnily enough, my older son was NEVER interested in that stuff. He was all about the wheels (vehicles). We bought him a doll and a pushchair, and that went down like a lead balloon. My kids are a walking stereotype but that's ok, cos that's what they showed interest in!!

Unclutch, it's just a bloody advert.

Just use one of the browsers that block all adverts like the Brave browser. No adverts on Mumsnet or anywhere else - including YouTube. Job done

What wonderful sorcery is this?! Brave browser?

Doesn’t matter it’s not the exact same toy, it’s still a toy vacuum and a boy playing with it!

Thingsthatgo · 03/04/2026 14:39

I don’t understand why some women aren’t more angry about this stuff. Every single day there is a post on here about men who don’t do enough around the house; don’t anticipate things that need doing, leave their clothes lying around etc.
My DH is great around the house, but I am still angry on behalf of the women who have to deal with that shit - it begins In childhood, in the attitudes of our parents and the crap we get fed by society and marketing by big companies like Fisher Price.

Which part of your post is relevant to my having an issue with an advert for a different toy?!

It's my favourite browser although Chrome is better for searches in the address bar. Having said that, I don't really search anymore, I just ask Grok or Gemini.

Brave is also very good for privacy and security. It's one of the best with Opera, DuckDuckGo and Tor.

That is not the same toy.

But the advert is only showing a boy. Is that not also ‘Horrifically sexist’?

OneTimeThingToday · 03/04/2026 14:42

https://www.smythstoys.com/uk/en-gb/toys/educational-toys/fisher-price-laugh-and-learn-light-up-learning-vacuum/p/175827

Is this the same one?

Should companies have to pay for two child actors for every toy?

If every advert for every role play toy was a girl, you would have a point. But one girl in one advert is not an issue. If there wete multiple girls in one advert, again an issue.

And by fisher price!

Loads of FP marketing showing boys using vacuums, cooking, making coffee, floor moping…. Outrageous!!

Coconutter24 · 03/04/2026 14:42

Chagula · 03/04/2026 14:39

Which part of your post is relevant to my having an issue with an advert for a different toy?!

Because both toys are vacuums!

Tuckshirtin · 03/04/2026 14:43

Chagula · 03/04/2026 14:39

Which part of your post is relevant to my having an issue with an advert for a different toy?!

Same brand
Same type of toy

LOADS of Fisher price marketing showing BOYS mopping floors, cooking, vacuuming

but of course you’ll skate over that!

Coconutter24 · 03/04/2026 14:44

Tuckshirtin · 03/04/2026 14:42

And by fisher price!

There’s plenty of pictures with both boys and girls playing with these stuff but Op has only picked up a picture of a girl because they want to claim sexism

Tuckshirtin · 03/04/2026 14:45

This is just embarrassing

you saw an ad and got very angry but didn’t do even two mins research in to this brand and all its other years of marketing cleaning toys… which patently shows boys very very regularly

Growlybear83 · 03/04/2026 14:50

Chagula · 03/04/2026 14:28

Well I do. You clearly haven't considered the sexist, societal ramifications.

Ive got better things to worry about, but I can’t say thst supposed sexism bothers me in the slightest.

Dollymylove · 03/04/2026 14:52

Blimey I can hear the pearls being clutched from here 😅 what 2 year old kid is going to look at an advert of a girl pushing a toy hoover and proclaim its sexist? Boys can play with them as well. Just like girls can play with boy type toys. Or is it a competition to see who can be the most outraged at a little girl pushing a toy that she actually likes?
God help us if she's seen pushing a dolly's pram!!!

redbottleblue · 03/04/2026 14:56

So no company should ever use a girl to advertise any sort of 'cleaning' toy? I think you are being sexist in a different way

TheIceBear · 03/04/2026 14:56

Coconutter24 · 03/04/2026 14:39

Doesn’t matter it’s not the exact same toy, it’s still a toy vacuum and a boy playing with it!

yeh I mean should all toys of household all appliances have both sexes playing with them ? Or just solely boys to make a point that men do housework ?

Fupoffyagrasshole · 03/04/2026 14:56

My 2 year old boy is always playing with his toy hoover and sweeping brush - loves them 🤷‍♀️

Soontobe60 · 03/04/2026 14:59

ProudAmberTurtle · 03/04/2026 14:20

Maybe Fisher Price are aware that boys tend not to want to play with their vacuum cleaner toys and that's why they don't market them to them?

Why do you assume that boys don’t want to play with a vacuum toy? My nephews, grandsons and boy children in my school nursery have played with all manner of domestic appliance toys.

Fluffyholeysocks · 03/04/2026 14:59

Of course it's not 'horrifically sexist'.

Reasonstobelieve · 03/04/2026 15:01

I wonder if women during the first world war would look at this advert today & say I'd rather be depicted in the the trenches on the front line. Give me a hoover any day.
