'Sympathy' reaction used inappropriately?

BillieWiper · 14/01/2026 20:47

I'm not sure if I'm misinterpreting it or it's just not really a thing...

But has anyone had the 'sympathy' (flowers thing) reaction seemingly used in a sarcastic manner? Almost like 'I feel sorry for you for thinking this as you must be pathetic'?

It's difficult to describe it but it feels a bit like the misuse of the 'laughing' reaction all over again.

It's only happend a couple of times to me and again I'm happy to be proved paranoid! Just wondering if others have felt it ever used in this way?

Bad day?

they are to show support.

perhaps mumsnet can allow posters to disable the reactions if people are so sensitive to anything they might feel isn't done sincerely

I might have i advertently sent you a 'React'. I was following your instructions out of curiosity and it went further than I expected. Think of me as a small child who shouldn't be allowed near computers.

Bad day?

No, not at all. Just making some observations.

LighthouseLED · 14/01/2026 22:19

Does anyone else not actually notice if people react to their posts?

I can’t imagine scrolling back on a thread to see what reaction I’ve got.

sharkyroy · 14/01/2026 21:28

Since when did a flower emoji mean sympathy?

Since always. Or, since the beginning of emoji times anyway. Even if you have never noticed that before it’s a pretty straightforward thing to imagine or work out why.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 14/01/2026 22:25

I thought you meant real flowers and it seemed like a lot of effort to be passive aggressive/sarcastic!

Yes, the bouquet emoji probably is used that way but I would just ignore it as I don’t know the stranger on the internet for it to bother me.

Yes I've only used if people have been talking about the loss of a loved one or pet or their mental health.

PollyBell · 14/01/2026 22:28

No idea really but does it matter what random people you dont know put or say?

you get notifications

BillieWiper · 14/01/2026 22:33

Thanks again everyone for your replies. Some posters could've been a bit less blunt but hey ho. I get that it seemed a silly question to some of you! X

Not If you’ve turned them off!

yeah, but that's a "you problem" Flowers 😂

LighthouseLED · 14/01/2026 22:49

I’m not seeing any problem 😁

Odd because the majority of posters on this thread are saying otherwise. In fact someone pointed out that when you hover over the flower emoji it even says support, not sympathy. So in the interest of OPs thread, I send you these with absolute sarcasm Flowers

Megifer · 15/01/2026 09:59

Yea ive had this, and the laughing emoji as a piss take. Im not an overly sensitive person so just ignore them.

that's because pp are confused between the emoji Flowers and the react button at the bottom of the posts.

OvernightBloats · 15/01/2026 10:09

I have also noticed this on a couple of comments I have made where it did not make sense to send a support reaction in response.

Think some people are using the flower reactions passive aggressively to patronise. It is their way to send a message to say that they don't agree with what you say or it is a way to condescend.

You are not imagining it! Reaction emojis should be made public or just limited to agree/disagree.

See! Laugh emoji needed 😆

LoveIsJustARiver · 15/01/2026 10:50

I have, as have a couple of friends that use mumsnet.

TheAutumnCrow · 15/01/2026 11:02

MNHQ itself has set the emojis thus:

The clapping hand 👏 = THANKS

The thumbs up 👍 = AGREE

The heart ♥️ = LOVE

The flowers Flowers = SUPPORT

There is room for ambiguity here, because it’s unclear in using an emoji whether I’m (eg) supporting the post or poster, loving the post or poster, thanking the poster for posting on a thread with a different perspective or thanking them for sharing my opinion, or what specifically I might be agreeing about in a complex discussion.

At the bottom of your post it says ‘react’ and if you click that there are four emojis to click on. Only you can see which one I click on. But if I insert an emoji in this comment, everyone can see it.

Here’s a ❤(heart) and I’ll send you a thumbs up too.

Thank you. But I disagree they should be public. It would just lead to 'like chasers' and people liking things because they see loads of others have.
