Dear MNHQ - A good suggestion regarding putting the laugh react emoji back.

Please can you look at the suggestions on this thread regarding putting the laugh reaction back?

Yes, I'm well aware that it was removed because some awful people were abusing it.

But is it possible to bring it back as something that members can toggle on/off in their settings, if they do/don't want people to laugh react to their posts?

And if the tech team are feeling particularly generous, could they separate them out so we could toggle them on/off individually?

To think we should have the option to have the laughing emoji on our threads | Mumsnet

Just that. Why can't we have an option to have the laughing emoji's on if we want and off if we don't? I've some really funny ( not bitchy, just gen...

Honestly that’s a genius idea! And not difficult to do either

LeonMccogh · 05/12/2025 17:36

They won’t do it

They won’t do it

Can you give the reason you think they might not?

It seems to me it'd be a chance to keep the majority happy both ways.

Agree this is a brilliant idea that SURELY is a win-win solution. Surely? It's perfect.

Poms · 05/12/2025 19:17

But you can still use a laugh emoji > 😆

iSage · 05/12/2025 19:20

It's a great idea - I wonder how easy it would be, from a tech point of view, to implement.

CandyCayne · 05/12/2025 19:28

Poms · 05/12/2025 19:17

But you can still use a laugh emoji > 😆

And the thread still fills up at 1000 posts and slows down considerably way before then.

It just cuts down on lots of quoting and 😆 - ing on the thread really.

Can’t people opt out of the notifications anyway? I don’t get any.

EchoedSilence · 05/12/2025 19:38

Yes you can opt out of notifications.

Yes but you cannot opt out or in with regards to people using the react buttons on your posts.

Hiding the notifications won't stop you from seeing someone has reacted when you're posting on the actual thread itself.

If they could do that then great. Personally I was delighted to see the back of it - we didn't have threads filled up with 😂 before the emojis were introduced and we wouldn't again - and as the lack of the laughter emoji stops people behaving like dicks then I'm all for it.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 05/12/2025 21:00

I’m ok with the other emojis but not laugh. After getting some mockingly.

But you wouldn't if MNHQ made it so you could toggle them off?

OP posts:
Lonelycrab · 05/12/2025 22:31

Probably too difficult to implement technically I would have thought.

I think they should bring it back, but only on threads where it’s not able to be abused. Ie lighthearted threads.

Ahhh, ok. I use the app so I don’t see any reactions on threads.

We can only see other people's reactions to our own posts.

But the suggestion was, if we don't want others to react to our posts we should be able to toggle them on/off.

It’d have to be selective. Not all or nothing. It’s just the laugh one I have a problem with

Yes it would be good if we could toggle them on/off individually.

I'm really not very techie so I could be way off the mark, but I don't imagine it'd be too difficult.

I mean given all the other things we can toggle.

Yet another thread about the laugh emoji.

Why this obsession over something which was a short experiment that proved that a lot of posters can't be trusted to behave in a decent way?

It was withdrawn for very good reason.

It's perfectly possible to live a full and fulfilling life without a damned emoji. It's very easy to tell other posters if you find a post amusing without reintroducing it.

BeckyAMumsnet · 06/12/2025 13:30

Thanks for your suggestion, @CandyCayne, we'll certainly discuss this.

My thoughts too.

It's just occurred to me that everyone demanding it back isn't (necessarily) doing it because they're desperate to express that they found something funny - there are tons of ways to do that, including the existing "love" reaction.

It's because they're desperate to receive some.

InLoveWithAI · 06/12/2025 16:30

I think this whole thing is ridiculous.

If you can't cope with a laugh emoji, you probably shouldn't be in the internet tbh.

Well conversely my feeling is that people who can't cope without it have something very sadly lacking in their lives, and their communication skills.

And actually given that a lot of posters on MN are in the position of having absolutely nobody irl to talk to and their only access to help.and support is through MN or the interenet your comment is pretty nasty..You are telling isolated and vulnerable people to get off the internet so all the sad people who can't live without an emoji can have their fun.

I do think it's (hopefully) the most workable suggestion/solution so far 😁

I would prefer this to be a place where people don't get laughed at, unseen by others, for talking about their grief at their dead children or suicidal thoughts.

Regardless of whether they can "cope" with it.

If you do want that, there are tons of places you can go to online.
