Dear MNHQ - A good suggestion regarding putting the laugh react emoji back.

CandyCayne · 05/12/2025 17:28

Please can you look at the suggestions on this thread regarding putting the laugh reaction back?

Yes, I'm well aware that it was removed because some awful people were abusing it.

But is it possible to bring it back as something that members can toggle on/off in their settings, if they do/don't want people to laugh react to their posts?

And if the tech team are feeling particularly generous, could they separate them out so we could toggle them on/off individually?

If it's really important to you to know if someone finds your post funny then you can toggle the feature on.

You might want to toggle it off if you're posting about something sensitive like mental health, abortion, relationship difficulties etc though. I can't imagine anyone would want their posts on those boards to be laughed at.

Edited

Yes I can see it works on those boards.

It does sound like rather a lot of toggling ...😂

I don’t think the laughing emoji should be brought back. No one needs to tell someone that they found their post funny that much and if they do, use words or an emoji in the text box. The thread filling up quicker is not a reason to not just do this, you can start a thread number 2, 3……..100 if you need to.

Therefore we don't need any emojis do we as it could all be done on the thread.

@AromanticSpices yes of course I understood.

But that would no longer be able to happen if posters can toggle them off.

But the other emojis don’t seem to be used to mock, so although they’re not necessary, they’re not causing an issue. I bet if the laughing emoji was put back on, even if people could toggle and the default was off, some posters would toggle to have it on and then moan it was used to mock. It’ll cause MNHQ issues, even if it’s just them spending time telling people they can choose to turn it off.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 07/12/2025 12:28

I’m curious. The ones that want it back or those saying I’m sensitive to get upset at laughing-have you received one sent in a mocking fashion?

I have heard on other threads some of the things that got laughed at and it was pure unkindness.

These threads can start out innocuous enough but they can flare up when someone gets really defensive or angry about a point of view. Using the laugh emoji secretly was a tool relied on by some who couldn't articulate their pov but wanted to be dismissive anyway.

People moan about everything.

The tech they can probably do but miracles may take a little longer 🤣🤣

That's true 😂

I think the default being off is better though because it allows people who want others to react to their posts and don't mind if someone laughs at them to turn them on, or if they don't ever post sensitive stuff so it wouldn't affect them. For those of us who have no interest in knowing whether others secretly like our posts or find them funny, we could just keep it turned off.

For those of us who have no interest in knowing whether others secretly like our posts or find them funny, we could just keep it turned off.

I think though that sometimes things can seem like it isn't sensitive but another poster can still drive it into that corner.

So something like, by way of fictional example, "I try to make sure I bake a Christmas cake for every member of my family every year. It takes up 6 of the Saturdays leading up to Christmas and costs me a lot in dried fruit and other ingredients, but it is a tradition I have started and it brings me a lot of joy to do this for my family."

Then some poster, who deep down is feeling needled because they know their family are lucky to get a defrosted Betty's yorkie on the day, reacts with 😂- which they know would look wholly inappropriate if posted openly. Cake baker couldn't have predicted this with a toggle exercise.

I'd personally just leave it off or on I think, so the toggle wouldn't even be a useful feature for me.

Yes I agree. Just wanted to know if those pro laugh emoji had received one like that.

JaneJeffer · 07/12/2025 15:08

Calliopespa · 07/12/2025 11:47

I'm afraid I can see that as the only substantive objection to not having it too.

If you want to laugh, you can laugh. It's one click and if clogging is really an issue, perhaps they should just extend the thread lengths.

They can’t extend the thread length unless they want everyone’s phone to burst into flames on busy threads. When you’re on a long, active thread the ads cause such overheating it’s ridiculous.

AromanticSpices · 07/12/2025 16:27

Calliopespa · 07/12/2025 11:48

But then none of those posters know if someone thought their post was genuinely funny - which is the whole point of a laugh function in the first place.

I agree with others that those who care about finding out if they got laughs will toggle it on - once they've learned how to - so that's not really an issue.

I'm not for or against it. Or the others. I really couldn't care less either way. I don't use it in a negative way.

And I have notifications turned off, so I genuinely have no idea if anybody reacts to my comments.

Reddit and Facebook don't have this issue. Reddit even have a thumbs down counter and people don't complain or get upset on the forum.

Being this invested in an emoji on a forum seems very unhealthy.

Notifications have nothing to do with the emojis - they show on your post. If it was as easy as simply hiding your notifications then great, but they're separate.

JaneJeffer · 07/12/2025 23:23

Maybe there should be up and down voting. That would be fun 😎

On Reddit, apparently there is a Reddit care function that people use passive aggressively though.

Then don't go looking at your previous posts/comments?

I've never seen if anybody has done any emojis on mine, because I don't look at them. I follow the thread.

So do I. But I’ll go back to my last post and read from there. So
ill see the emojis then.

Have you received one sent to mock?

Probably, it is mumsnet after all 😅 I just tend not to dwell on negative posts / posters.

I suggested it come back because some posters really made me laugh last week and I personally feel, if your that funny that you've made me chuckle out loud then you deserve the laughing emoji to recognise that. The heart emoji just doesn't give the same vibe imo

Squishedpassenger · 08/12/2025 06:30

I think they should make all the reactions public for everyone to see like it is on Facebook. You can then see who put an inappropriate emoji on a post.

Oh @CandyCayne ! Just catching up with this debate. I was with you the whole way through until you wantonly extrapolated the pp's point about the single emoji that this debate is all about to all the emojis.

What a shame.

Then it's a shame you can't understand that if people are saying we don't need that emoji, they should know we don't need any emojis.

It's never been about a NEED has it?

It's a bit strange to claim we don't need a laughing emoji but we do apparently need the others.

And if HQ allow us to turn them on/off then no-one will be affected by nasty people misusing them.

Which bit of it's only the laugh emoji that people get upset with are you not understanding? Or willfully ignoring?

For what it's worth, I miss the laughs too. I enjoyed both giving 😂 and receiving 😂 (really tried to avoid that sounding sexual!) and I'd be happy with the default/off, select/on function which so far seems to be the optimum idea.

Which bit of I completely get that are you not understanding or willfully ignoring? 😳

But more to the point, which bit of 'NEED' doesn't come into it for ANY emojis are you struggling with?

I know it's the laughing emoji that people get upset with, that's what this thread is about 🤦‍♀️

Just to be crystal clear again, we don't need any emojis!! We don't need the one that some people get upset by and we don't need the ones that some people DON'T get upset by. I cannot be any clearer I'm afraid 🤣🤣

If you look eg at Facebook the laugh emoji is generally used to get a ride, someone might ask why people are treating someone so badly and someone will laugh at them. I had so many serious posts laughed at and it actually really stings. I thought it was a great move to get rid

I think you are hyper-focusing on the word "need".

And I think your style is becoming increasingly childish.
