Bright ads in dark mode

For the first time, I've been using dark mode because of this week's user interface changes.

So, it's dark: a black background, with white text AND HUGE, LOUD, OFTEN WHITE-BASED ADVERTS RIGHT NEXT TO THE THREAD which destroy the calmer mood. How is dark mode supposed to work? Has MN ever actually considered how inappropriate it is to have large areas of plain white, bright colour, flashing images, etc, next to text on a black screen to which someone has retreated from the brightness & flashiness of light mode?

Is this a bug (please fix), or did someone design it like this (in which case, please explain the thinking because it doesn't make sense to me)?

NB I get ads which flash on & off as they try to load - I've reported them elsewhere.

Isn't it possible to turn down the brightness of the ads for dark mode, to get rid of the unpleasant contrast?

Yeah this really annoys me too, I often scroll Mumsnet while putting the littles to bed but the adds make having dark mode on pretty pointless

Here's another example. This one's inside the thread itself.

This negates dark mode completely.

I completely agree - thanks for starting a thread to point this out 👍 I use dark mode because I have light sensitivity and the bright white of the ads really undermines my trying to use Mumsnet without developing a headache.

Hi there @ifIwerenotanandroid. Thanks for getting in touch. Unfortunately, with many of the ads, this is just how they are supplied to us so there's not very much we can do about those. There are some though that don't work that way, so we'll investigate whether there's anything that can be done there, which might help a bit.

Thanks!
