Why are posts deleted for breaking talk guidelines but then the poster is not informed?

I see it all the time on here. People saying nasty horrible things, their posts get deleted for breaking talk guidelines but they are not told their posts are deleted so they carry on.

OP posts:
thinklagoon · 15/08/2025 08:29

I assumed they were informed but carried on regardless because twats are gonna twat.

They are not informed. The posts are just deleted.

Most are probably oblivious.

You don’t get notified of deletions. If you want to know why you have to email and ask.

NotTheHair · 15/08/2025 09:00

I don't think people would stop posting even if it was pointed out they'd been deleted.

It's pretty obvious if you look on a thread that posts have been deleted - the background changes colour. If you're not going back to look at a thread after you've posted then I would expect there's not much to gain from informing someone.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 15/08/2025 09:04

I think an automated message for posts being deleted would be good. Then if posters want to know why they can ask MN.

True the ones who repeatedly post offensive crap that gets deleted properly won't care but they might get fed up with having their inboxes spammed byMN.

I always wonder what goes wrong in some pretty normal threads when I go to bed and then find it’s been deleted in the morning. Clearly something has gone wrong along the way but I don’t find the little MNHQ blurb particularly helpful. Maybe if they expanded a bit on the reason the thread was taken down it would help. Sometimes I feel like I’ve invested time and thought in to a thread and then it’s just taken away and I don’t have a sense of closure! I’ve seen a lot of ‘we didn’t feel this thread was particularly helpful to OP’, but perhaps if they added more of ‘because of x y and z’ it would have a bit of an explanation to people who genuinely have no idea what’s happened.

WhatNoRaisins · 15/08/2025 09:31

There's arseholes and there's reasonable people that have the odd arsehole moment that they're open to learning from. The latter would benefit from knowing when and what has been deleted.

I think it would be more of a deterrent. Lots of people post crap and insult others and just move on.

Also is some kind of record being kept so persistent offenders get banned?

Hi OP, thanks for asking about this. We don't inform people every time we delete a post, but if they've had several deletions on the same thread or within a short space of time we'll definitely get in touch to remind them of our Talk Guidelines. We'll also temporarily suspend people if their posts are derailing a thread.

If you have any concerns about a specific poster please hit the report button on one of their posts and provide any details that may be useful - we're always happy to take a closer look and will take any necessary action.

Gloriia · 15/08/2025 17:26

I think people should be informed so at least they know their tone is wrong because often that is all it is. In the old days you'd have to call someone a cunt to get deleted now sarcasm seems to upset some posters.

Quite often when we disagree with people particularly on the citme threads then posters with a grudge will stalk and report anything said in an attempt to get someone banned.

Unless mnhq keep an eye out for malicious reporting?

I got a post deleted recently for saying Use your brain.

I’ve seen way worse posts than that not get deleted.

I’ve gone off track … I agree it would be better if posters got told as soon as a post got deleted. Other sites do that like the Student Room & it is a heads up you’ve upset someone so need to soften your tone.

What counts as derailment?

PennySweeet · 31/08/2025 13:35

I've always wondered why warnings are given by email instead of a PM.

Unless you have two tabs open you're unlikely to read that email until you've actually had your account suspended.

Much more attention grabbing to look up and see the PM symbol.

But this has been mentioned millions of times over the years, and yet MNHQ seem to want to stick with emails that make harder work for themselves, because they no doubt end up having to make far more deletions.

Sure, not everyone will heed the warning but plenty would I'm sure.

thinklagoon · 31/08/2025 14:31

@PennySweeet I use MN on my phone browser: an email will pop up on my phone as a separate notification right in front of the thread I’m on, whereas I wouldn’t see a PM at all – an extra symbol buried on a part of the screen I have no reason to look at.

Ahh ok I rarely use my phone.

I’m with you. I’ve always wondered why the perfectly adequate PM system isn’t used.

Yes this! I have a really stupid named throwaway email address just for mumsnet. I don't use it for anything else so don't check it unless I notice I've had a post deleted and ask why.

I'd much prefer to be PM'd @JoMumsnet is this something MN could consider in addition to email - In addition to emailing because I know not everyone has the PM function turned on.
