Laugh reaction disappeared?

Mareleine · 02/06/2025 10:25

Hi so I reported my own post earlier (as per your instructions on this) because someone (obviously not me on my own post) had used a nasty mocking "laugh" emoji on my serious post. I even named the poster who had done it.

In the last hour, my own laugh reaction on posts has been removed. I have not used the laugh emoji to mock anyone.

Has someone mixed something up or has the laugh reaction been removed for everyone overnight? I'm hoping it's the latter because it's obviously being used to bully people and I've seen numerous threads on this before it happened to me.

MNHQ confirmed a while ago that they were going to be removing the laugh reaction, precisely because people were using it maliciously

Annascaul · 02/06/2025 10:28

It was always going to be misused, really. It was an odd one to choose in the first place.

Oh thank you this is excellent news. I came over to site stuff looking for an announcement about it and must have missed one. The one I reported must have been one of the last ones then.

Mine is gone, and I don’t think I’ve ever used it, so I’m assuming it’s a blanket removal?

NormasArse · 02/06/2025 10:30

It’s a shame. I wanted to laugh at something I found really funny, and I can’t.

Why do some unkind twats ruin things for the rest of us?

Mareleine · 02/06/2025 10:30

@Annascaul I wanted to think adults would use it properly, but I think it stayed too long after people started reporting issues with it.

OP posts:
DappledThings · 02/06/2025 10:34

That's a shame. I liked making people laugh. Had it a couple of times where I assume it was meant to say the person thought I was being a twat rather than funny but it didn't bother me. If it was an attempt to bully it failed, I jist assume they are someone I'd never see eye to eye with.

Seems a bit snowflakey to be affected by it.

BobbyBiscuits · 02/06/2025 10:36

I'm glad it's gone. I never ever used it mockingly except once in retaliation but then I unselected it.
Loads of people use it to mock and make people feel stupid.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 02/06/2025 10:38

Yes, MN announced it was happening and it looks like they've recently implemented it.

I think it's a shame that we no longer have a simple way to acknowledge that we appreciate somebody's witty comment - I suppose the 'thanks' emoji will have to do - but this is just one more example of why we can't have nice things, because of a few people who like to spoil things for everybody else.

I only ever had one or two people use it mockingly - as opposed to lots of people who used it to appreciate something clearly intended to be humorous that I'd written.

I agree! It's a pity we're no longer "allowed" to laugh at a post. I used it when I found a post funny. I feel like we're being treated like children for fear of some using something inappropriately.

bluegreygreen · 02/06/2025 10:47

Agree - sometimes things are simply funny.

I also don't understand why reactions have to be invisible to everyone but the poster concerned. If we are to have them at all, why can't they be visible as they are on other sites?

BIossomtoes · 02/06/2025 10:48

We can still quote the post and use 😂

I agree it's ridiculous

Some posts are quite funny and some are so ridiculous you can only laugh. Back to 'quoting, 😂😂😂'.

SpunkySquid · 02/06/2025 10:50

You reported someone for a laughing reaction? Good lord.

Yes I reported you for laughing at me in a mocking way on a post. It's what you're supposed to do when someone uses the laugh emoji to bully you on this site and @MNHQ have previously stated this is the correct procedure to follow. Now you have to bully people out in the open instead.

It gets a bit tedious, though, when somebody 'wins the Internet for the day' with a perfectly-timed wonderfully hilarious observation - and then you get 50 posts quoting it and adding a laugh emoji.

In what way was it bullying you? Were you by any chance being ridiculous in the post you reported?

Why wouldn't you report bullying?

And it's the bully's oldest response to blame YOU for objecting to bullying and for 'not having a sense of humour'.

SpunkySquid · 02/06/2025 10:59

How is a laugh reaction bullying? Get a grip. How do you know someone didn’t accidentally click the wrong reaction?
@Mareleine i have no idea who you are luv, I’m certainly not bullying you or anyone.

It's become a fairly well-established means of shitting on posters on this site, it has been since its inception. Many people previously have explained on many threads how it makes them feel when they write a post and get laughed at privately for it. It's a thing. That's why MN have taken it away. You don't have to understand (maybe you are incapable of this), but you do have to accept that its gone because some twats wrecked it for everyone.

OP posts:
TwattyMcFuckFace · 02/06/2025 10:59

A removal is ridiculous, like keeping the whole school in at playtime because a handful of people have been misbehaving.

Deal with those who us it maliciously, not the 'whole school'.

Maybe the “twats wrecking it for everyone” are the pathetic snowflakes reporting a bloody emoji.

Using a laugh emoji as shorthand for telling somebody that you think their opinion is ridiculous IS bullying - 100%.

If you want to challenge somebody's opinion, you need to use your words publicly on the open thread.
