Any Techs about? Is there any adware/spyware on MN???

I have been having real problems with Adware/spyware loading onto my machine, having removed all the programmes with Spyware Doctor (and imunized the machine) and running Norton etc they keep coming back. Basically MN is just about the only site I visit, the Mothercare ad sometimes causes problems with my machine at times it comes up across the screen where it shouldn't be and I get a message telling me that something is trying to install and do I want to block it.

I have told my DH I'm sure it's nothing to do with MN but it's driving him nuts as I need my computer for work and three times this week he has spent ages trying to rid it of these things.

Of course the machine won't do it now but the Mothercare ad was coming up across the text when I hit the back button on my browser and a message came up saying something (can't remember what) was trying to install itself. The thing that is making DH query MN is that we have removed the programmes several times and then after every visit to the net (I don't generally surf just visit MN, Abbey National (whose site was playing up too but just the once) and e-bay (where my personal suspicions lie)) they have reinstalled themselves (although so far so good today).

Just remembered I think it was Double-click that was trying to install at the time the Mothercare ad went dodgy. Although as I say it's not happening now so perhaps it is all fixed.

If it was doubleclick - that's not a programme, adware or otherwise. it's a cookie (a small file which is used to track advertising - not actually a privacy concern at all, but for some reason many internet security programmes treat them as if they were.)

However, I've never seen a mothercare ad like that on MN. Sounds to me like you have some kind of adware which spyware doctor isn't deleting properly. Try going online to any site (eg BBC.co.uk and see if it reinstalls itself then.

Demented · 16/01/2005 12:27

I think the Spyware Doctor programme has got them all this time. Someone did say to DH that it may take several attempts. Interesting about doubleclick because that was the one that was setting off most of the alerts that come up on the screen. The things that were recurring were bundle, DC1, DC2, deskadserv and sahagent also zango but it appeared to be away the last time. I don't think it comes from MN at all but felt I had to check.

had a chat with dh and he said that advertising banners can carry spyware installation programs! Cause I just found 8 different spywares on our system without actually having downloaded anything...

Hello all,

There is no spyware on mumsnet. Some of the third-party advertising we carry may try to create a tracking cookie, but that's all.

Just to clarify, a tracking cookie in theory lets an advertiser or advertising agent "follow" you from site to site, ie they know that a particular computer looked at xyza123.com and then looked at bytyxm.com. This lets them build lists of your browsing habits and use them to target advertising.

The latest versions of Internet Explorer (6+) and Firefox block these by default - ie if you have the default security settings - while allowing first party cookies. "First-party cookies" which mumsnet uses, are cookies that only ever go back to the site you are on. We use them at musment so that you don't have to enter your nickname and password each time you post a message, so that you can "log on" and so on. Without them, there is absolutely no way for us to know that two requests for pages came from the same computer. If you block cookies completely, lots of sites just won't work, or will be limited in what they can do.

"Spyware" or "adware" is usually used to mean software like at the worst keystroke recorders that are downloaded to your computer and then report back on your habits to some third party, and could potentially report your banking passwords etc. Other types of this stuff, also known as "malware", will do things like throw up pop-up adverts, even when you are not using a browser, and so on.

The confusion comes in because some of the malware removal tools don't make a huge distinction between the different types of pest they deal with, and will just report "30 objects found" or something similar. Without trawling through logs, it isn't always easy to tell if they are genuine nasties or just cookies.

So you might think you are getting constantly "infected" when in reality you have nothing to worry about.

Regards,
Tech

Bunglie you're obsessed. Or should that be obssessed, obssesed, obcesed. Oh I dunno. Maybe we need a spell checker.

Yes, we'll add a spell-checker. It's on the "things to do" list. However, this is a list that only ever grows, so it may take a while.....

Kelly1978 · 18/01/2005 16:35

Demented,

It sounds to me like your spyware isn't actually cleaning them off your computer properly. I constantly get viruses from kazaa etc. and I use Spysweeper and Norton to try to keep my computer clean. Spysweeper will list all the things it finds suspicious, but it can't always delete them all. If you run anti virus software twice and it comes up with the same stuff again, this is likely to be what is happening.

So then you need to delete the stuff manually from the system registry. Go to start-> run, and type regedit. You can access every file on your computer here and delete the offending files that are listed by the spy detection software. It is very time consuming, and you have to be very careful what you are deleting.

HTH!

Bunglie · 18/01/2005 17:37

Oh Tech!

I luv you, I'm what! Obssessed ! Who me, Nooo!

WigWamBam · 18/01/2005 18:09

Obsessed.

You spelled persistance correctly - see, you can do it without a spellchecker ...

SenoraPostrophe · 18/01/2005 18:18

ks - mozilla has security flaws too, you know .

SP: yes but the difference is Mozilla has nightly updates, so the second a security flaw is discovered it's fixed fairly sharpish

Bunglie · 19/01/2005 12:55

ODE TO TECH

A Spellchecker Tech?
I love you, I do!
Despite WigWamBam,
(She is jealous of you!)
If she thinks I can spell,
She is Bonkerz as well,
I will love my Spellchecker,
But I love Mumsnet too.

There you are Tech, who said grovelling does not pay?
Oh and Coddy is exempt from using it as we love 'Coddy Speak' and when I have learnt her her Coddynesses Language I will be able to add it to my CV!!

WigWamBam · 19/01/2005 13:19
  1. I'm not jealous of Tech. And if I was, I wouldn't admit it.
2. I'm not jealous of Bunglie. Bunglie can't spell (and I can). 3. I'm not Bonkerz (that's someone else).
Newbarnsleygirl · 19/01/2005 13:19

I have just read this thread and the second I clicked on AC a spyware box came up! I've never had one of them before.

PrettyCandles · 19/01/2005 13:36

WWB - persistence

WigWamBam · 19/01/2005 13:41

OK, so I can't spell (I was actually being ironic, but never mind ). Don't give Bunglie any more excuses for wanting a spellchecker ...

PrettyCandles · 19/01/2005 13:44

I think we need a 'derrr-utterly-gormless' icon. Or maybe a 'whooosh-that-went-right-over-my-head' one!
