Premium and getting banned

HansHolbein · 15/03/2025 19:55

If a user pays for premium and then gets banned, how do they cancel their subscription?

I’m assuming that if you are banned you can’t log back into your account, so how would you cancel your subscription?

TIA

Cancel the cheque Stop the direct debit?

HansHolbein · 15/03/2025 20:00

I’ve just been on my banking app and can’t see a direct debit for it. Unless I’m looking in the wrong place!

Hi there, @HansHolbein - as per our terms of use, users should email us at [email protected] for any subscription queries if they're unable to access their account.

Hoppinggreen · 17/03/2025 13:00

I was wondering this
I paid by card so no DD and cancelling recurring card payments is not always easy
Plus I have paid for a year so if I got banned a few months in I would have to try and get a refund

HansHolbein · 17/03/2025 13:01

@BeckyAMumsnet Thanks 😊

For ease, if anyone wondered what the terms of use are for premium:

5. Mumsnet Premium

Subscriptions
Mumsnet offers monthly and annual subscriptions. We reserve the right to vary the features and types of service we make available to different categories of users at any time.

We will try our utmost to process your subscription promptly but we don't guarantee your subscription will be activated by any specified time. Our contract with you to provide subscription services will be formed, and your access to subscription services will start, when we have successfully verified your payment and contact details. You will receive written confirmation when we have done this.

Renewal
Unless specifically stated in an offer or promotion when you place your subscription order with us, and unless Mumsnet decides to revoke your subscription (for example if you are banned from the site), you agree that at the end of the initial subscription period (and of each renewal period thereafter), your subscription will automatically renew for the same subscription period at the then prevailing renewal rate, which may change from time to time. You may cancel your subscription at any time as set out below.

Cancellation
You have the right to cancel your subscription at any time. If you cancel, you will continue to have access to your subscription until the end of the current subscription term. Payment already taken cannot be reimbursed.
You can cancel your subscription by completing the 'cancel my subscription' action at mumsnet.com/settings/premium or by notifying Mumsnet customer support at [email protected].

Mumsnet reserves the right to cancel individuals' subscriptions at any time and for any reason. If your membership of the site and/or subscription is terminated by Mumsnet due to a breach of these terms or our site's wider T&Cs (which will be determined solely by Mumsnet), you will not be entitled to receive a refund of payments already taken. Any scheduled payments will be cancelled and further payments not taken. You will continue to be responsible for any fees or other charges you have incurred prior to such termination.

Contacting us about your subscription
If you have any queries please contact our customer support at [email protected].

Fees and payments
You are responsible for any fees that are payable, including any processing or other fees charged by the issuing bank/payment provider.

The cost of your subscription will be made clear to you on the subscription order pages or otherwise during the order process. It may change from time to time. You agree to pay the fees at the rates notified to you at the time you purchase your subscription, together with any processing or other associated fees charged by the issuing bank/payment provider. Eligibility for any discounts is ascertained at the time you subscribe and cannot be changed during the term of your subscription. We will always inform you in advance of any increase in the price of your subscription and offer you an opportunity to cancel it if you do not wish to pay the new price.

You are responsible for the payment of all charges associated with the use, by you or someone else, of the site and/or a digital application using your ID.

When you purchase a subscription, you must provide us with complete and accurate payment information. By submitting payment details you confirm that you are entitled to use those payment details for this purpose. If we do not receive payment authorisation or any authorisation is subsequently cancelled, we may immediately terminate or suspend your access to your subscription, and in suspicious circumstances, we may contact the issuing bank/payment provider and/or law enforcement authorities or other appropriate third parties.

If your membership of the site or subscription is terminated by Mumsnet due to a breach of these terms or our site's wider T&Cs (which will be determined solely by Mumsnet), you will not be entitled to receive a refund of payments already taken. Any scheduled payments will be cancelled and further payments not taken.

You will continue to be responsible for any fees or other charges you have incurred prior to such termination.
Refunds can only be made to the credit/debit/charge card that was used for the original purchase, unless it has expired, in which case we will contact you.

It looks like if you have paid for the year then you won’t be entitled to a refund if there is time outstanding at the time of the ban?

It also says that

’Mumsnet reserves the right to cancel individuals' subscriptions at any time and for any reason. If your membership of the site and/or subscription is terminated by Mumsnet due to a breach of these terms or our site's wider T&Cs (which will be determined solely by Mumsnet), you will not be entitled to receive a refund of payments already taken.

@BeckyAMumsnet Re this bit ‘Any scheduled payments will be cancelled and further payments not taken’ - does that mean that if Mumsnet bans someone, Mumsnet will cancel their premium subscription and not take any further money? So users should not need to send an email?

OP posts:
Hoppinggreen · 17/03/2025 13:15

Well I am not planning on getting banned but then I never did before 😁

HansHolbein · 17/03/2025 13:23

@Hoppinggreen It was one of my many late night wonderings so I thought I better ask 🤣

I’ve never heard of paying to use mumsnet, what extra benefit do you get access to?

Well I had to as I can't disable the Ad Blocker due to DH's work so my choices were use my phone to tether or pay to use MN

So it gets rid of the adverts? I didn’t even notice mumsnet has adverts.

HansHolbein · 24/03/2025 11:15

@BeckyAMumsnet @MNHQ please can you let me know the answer to this?

It’s been a week since I asked @BeckyAMumsnet (2 more posts, one which I reported and an email since then) and it seems I am being ignored. I’ve always had very pleasant conversations with Mumsent via the report button & emails. I wonder what is wrong with that question…

Usually Mumsnet are very responsive so this is disappointing. As I’ve got questions about something I have paid for I would expect some better communication.

Anyway, I’ve deleted Premium.

To everyone else, remember Mumsnet can revoke your account at any time and what I can infer from the lack of response is that Mumsnet may not cancel your Premium (you won’t be able to from your banking app nor your account as you won’t be able to access it).

As we have seen from previous posts on here from banned users in Site Stuff, Mumsnet can sometimes take many days, or not respond at all to enquires via email. Something to think about for perspective premium users, as it looks like you will have to keep paying, not be able to cancel it, and potentially be ignored via email.

Thanks @BeckyAMumsnet .

I eventually got a reply after waiting 12 days.

‘We're sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Payments will be cancelled for banned users - if for some reason this doesn't happen - e.g. if they have a different email address or Apple relay, then the advice is to contact MNHQ and we will cancel it on their behalf’.

That's why it's better to pay monthly.

HansHolbein · 19/06/2025 20:51

I agree but if you’ve paid for this month say, today, and then you get banned tomorrow - you can’t access your account to delete premium, as it doesn’t appear on your banking. You need access to your Mumsnet account to delete premium.

So you’ll be at Mumsnet’s mercy if they don’t delete it for you. You’ll probably be in for a long wait via email.

How come you're posting if you were banned. I didn't realise I'd resurrected an old thread. Have you sorted it now?

HansHolbein · 19/06/2025 20:57

I’ve never been banned, I was just pondering it all back when I wrote this thread, sorry for the confusion.

The thread tonight by the other person who was previously banned is exactly why I deleted premium.
