Announcement re deletion of Wig and Robe/Judge Flounce threads

Dear mumsnetters,

We are now able to shed a bit more light as to what actually occurred re the Wig and Robe/Judge Flounce episode. We are pretty sure (having received a confession of as much) that, as some of you suspected, W&R/JF was a non-lawyer masquerading as a QC. Given this knowledge we have deleted the relevant postings and banned the user from the site.

If nothing else the whole business is a salutary reminder that you can never be completely sure that folks are who they say they are and neither should you necessarily completely trust the advice, especially "professional" advice, posted on mumsnet.

As a result of some concerns raised by you we are looking into making parts of the site, the swaps and weight loss clubs for example, something that operates via mumsnet HQ so that people's addresses are not being circulated. If anyone has any other suggestions then please [email protected] or post them here and we promise to consider them.

We?d also remind folks that when organising meet ups you should take the same precautions you would when meeting anyone from the net - make sure you meet in a public place and that others know where you are going.

Having said all that, it would be a shame if this relatively rare occurrence of someone pretending to be someone they are not changed the warm, supportive, welcoming and caring atmosphere on mumsnet - and we're confident that you won't let it!

Thanks for all the supportive and helpful emails we've received from so many of you.

Carrie, Rachel and Justine

Just search Steve Schindler on the knowhere site

SoupDragon · 14/01/2005 10:54

I really think you should stop posting speculations about real people. If, as is highly likely, everything was made up ,including the names given, then there is no point keep digging into it. Why would the troll have given a real name and/or location??

Think about how would you feel if someone "stole" your identity and was trolling with it on another forum and then people on that forum kept raking over it and digging into your life?

SoupDragon · 14/01/2005 10:55

Yes, I know it's fascinating and I know the Steve Schidler on the nowhere site appears to be the same sort of troll but it's not a good idea to go looking for people who share the same name and are probably not the same person at all.

JanH · 14/01/2005 10:55

He had the same Knowhere number from Feb 01 (by Steve Schindler (Member 37872) on 18-Feb-01 - Chepstow site) until at least Sept this year - does that signify anything to you, Carrie? He only just got a new number...

And look at this from Farnsfield - this is a very important post:

Hi Lesley I don't know if you remember me, but I'm the Welsh guy who used to live in Mayflower Cottage before leaving farnsfield in 1998. I now live back in Wales and, in May this year, I became a dad again to a wonderful baby boy.

Janie! How the devil are you girl? The last time I saw you was in the Victoria Centre with your husband, that was years ago. I'm now back home in South Wales and living with a wonderful person named Jane. I became a dad in May this year to a fantastic baby boy we named Nicholas Patrick.
I'm still working as a Psychologist. I recently obtained Social services clearance, which has really boosted my income.

So, what are you doing with yourself in the Big Apple? I hope you and your family over there are well>>

Janie knows him...

CarrieG · 14/01/2005 10:56

Tbh if someone was using my name to make posts like the ones attributed to 'Steve Schindler' on the Knowhere site, I'd want to be told about it - I'd be bloody furious!

lowcalCOD · 14/01/2005 10:56

I know she will, I'm sorry soupy, I'm going now, no more, finished, gone, mmmmhhhhhmmmmmh [gag]

SoupDragon · 14/01/2005 10:58

No, because that's simply lifting stuff from another site. It's the more in depth digging like directory enquiries, 192.com etc that I don't think is a good idea.

lowcalCOD · 14/01/2005 10:58

wheres athe angry dragon?

SoupDragon · 14/01/2005 11:00

Grrrrrrrrrrr

Will that do?

flashingnose · 14/01/2005 11:00

Is trolling a criminal offence?

lowcalCOD · 14/01/2005 11:00

no the old dragon - what was ht ehorribel one called?

Frieda · 14/01/2005 11:00

But I do wonder what would have happened re the Cardiff meetup, if he/she hadn't been rumbled. My guess is that 'JF' would have mysteriously not turned up and the following morning, there would have been a flamboyant apologetic posting explaining how, in a freak accident on the way to the meetup her wig had somehow got caught in an air-conditioning vent, then her robe had somehow spontaneously combusted as she sat down to enjoy a large malt to soothe her nerves. And no one would have noticed strange lorry driver type with hairy hands sitting on his own at the back of the restaurant....

lowcalCOD · 14/01/2005 11:01

lol frieda
no she wodul have made up a legal emergency

CarrieG · 14/01/2005 11:01

Three houses in SS.co.uk's street have been sold in the last two years, one for £56500, one for £73000 and one for £33000

That particular house hasn't changed hands in the last 4 years.

Blu · 14/01/2005 11:05

I'm in fits at Frieda's air vent scenario

Frieda · 14/01/2005 11:06

Tee Hee I'm "working from home" today!

Mind you, I can't be on for long because I do have a legal emergency in a minute...
