What is the point in the 4 emoji reactions when they're basically all the same?

Piffys · 21/02/2025 20:54

A clap, a thumbs up, a heart. Those 3 are all exactly the same, a positive affirmation.

Then there's the laugh that's either used genuinely or sarcastically.

Why not have a thumbs up (I agree/well said) a thumbs down (dont agree) a sad face for sad situations, a laughing face and a jammy dodger?

OP posts:
Tiredofallthis101 · 21/02/2025 20:56

Agree, I wanted to do an angry face on se troll posts the other day but can only do positive emoji.

AnSolas · 21/02/2025 21:03

Clap = thanks (for help /posting info)
Thums up = agree (with comment)
Heart = love (totally love it / thinking kindly of you)
Smile = funny

What is the jammydodger saying to you?

BobbyBiscuits · 21/02/2025 21:04

There shouldn't be any thumbs downs or dislikes or anything like that. It would change the vibe and dynamic of it. It would also mean more people getting upset and feeling attacked. Even though others can't see how many reactions someone's got.

MeganCarter · 21/02/2025 21:08

what is the most thumbs up anyone has received on one particular post ?

It's an old MN joke. The biscuit.

I got seven yesterday.

AnSolas · 22/02/2025 04:53

Thanks
I clicked all the emoji on your first post did MN tell you that or just the last happy face?

TheElvesLongSleeves · 22/02/2025 04:56

Surprise and as OP, biscuits would be good!
There are quite a number of posts which deserve thumb down tbh and not just trolls

NattyTurtle59 · 22/02/2025 05:03

I would like an eyeroll emoji, and agree a thumbs down would be good.

AnSolas · 22/02/2025 05:58

Nope they would be used to bully and up the reporting to MN

Matrixremooted · 22/02/2025 06:01

I just want a like emoji- not thanks or agree or love, just like.

I got 10 & was hoping I would get a gold star or sticker or something from Mumsnet but No.

BobnLen · 22/02/2025 06:13

I would rather not have any

milveycrohn · 22/02/2025 06:16

Some of us are so confused with the language of emojis that we never use any of them, ever.

BobnLen · 22/02/2025 08:22

I hate the way they pop up when scrolling through threads, it never used to do that with just the thanks button

JaneJeffer · 22/02/2025 21:55

They need to get rid of all this behind the scenes stuff @LilyMumsnet

Yeah this!

SwanOfThoseThings · 23/02/2025 09:23

I suppose they are degrees of positive reaction.

Thumbs up - agree with you
Heart - I'm touched by your post or I passionately agree with it
Thanks - Thank you for being the one to say this at last/thank you for answering my question/thank you for supporting me on this thread

A 'shocked' emoji would have been useful on the recent entertaining WTF thread.

I can see why MNHQ haven't added thumbs down emojis as the fundamental principle of the site is 'support' and adding a thumbs down to someone's post isn't constructive and will just leave the poster wondering what they've said/done wrong. If you have to post your disagreement with a poster then at least they know why you disagree.

HebeMumsnet · 24/02/2025 09:46

Hi there @Piffys. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here.

As other posters have said, yes, we felt it was better to keep everything positive. We always encourage civil and constructive disagreement within conversations on the boards, but we were concerned that the 'positive discussion' element might be lost if people can just stick a 'dislike' emoji on posts. Whereas often people just want to show their thanks or approval and probably don't need to say much more than that.

We will pass your thoughts on though and will continue reading the thread to see what others think, too.

JaneJeffer · 24/02/2025 15:13

@HebeMumsnet but they are being used in a sarcastic and stalkery way which is all hidden behind the scenes. They should be removed IMO

XenoBitch · 24/02/2025 21:29

I don't see the point of the laughing emoji. People have experienced laughing reacts on posts that were not funny at all, and were serious things about health conditions.

I have had a couple of these used as a way to mock what
I said. I have started tagging anyone who does this and asking why they thought my comment was funny. At least that way their snide little reaction isn't a secret. I know it makes little difference on an anonymous forum, but it gives me some satisfaction😅
