Get rid of the Laugh reaction

LetsNCagain · 21/12/2024 07:46

We don't need the Laugh reaction.
I've now only had it had used mockingly.

Specifically for example, in a thread where the op is upset about something and I gave a supportive message. Some loser gave me the Laugh emoji because they think op is being ridiculous and by extension, so am I for showing sympathy.

Mumsnet, please just get rid of it. If someone says a funny joke, the clap hands or thumbs up is perfectly adequate. The Laugh emoji is the only one that can be used in a mocking way

I like the new reactions and wish there were more of them. I’ve got no problem with people laughing at my posts because the whole point of a forum is that people have different views. I use the laughing emoji to actually laugh at funny posts.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2025 08:27

I think that’s the only way to report it, which is ridiculous.

Not really. You can report posts for good things like nominating for classics, it just seems to mark them to get read not consign them automatically to a naughty bin.

What I meant was that it seems ridiculous to have to report your own thread to highlight an inappropriate [laugh] from another poster. There should be an easier/better way of flagging them.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/01/2025 08:39

I don't really see what could be easier than using the existing report function.

BIWI · 16/01/2025 10:28

Well yes - what else would you do @SirChenjins?!

SirChenjins · 16/01/2025 11:27

Not have them - or if they absolutely have to have them, remove them from some boards. Or have the option to turn them off.

If the tech can't cope with that then that's the problem - requiring posters to use emojis in their own posts which could then be called out or reported was hardly an onerous task.

I agree with this. It promotes some awful passive aggressive behaviour. I'd also encourage the mods to read the whole thread when there is a complaint.

Carouselfish · 16/01/2025 11:59

Yes, I think react buttons at all are a step down and encourage consequence free reaction. At least if you say something shitty, others will call it out.

Agreed. I won't use the react button!

Yes I am experiencing a poster doing that very thing to me. She tells me I don’t want to talk to you, and then puts a laughing emoji on my posts. Passive aggressive behaviour totally.

BIWI · 18/01/2025 09:29

@Differentstarts and @BeAzureAnt have you reported those posts/posters to MNHQ? Perhaps @HebeMumsnet would like to take a look?

Anyone misusing the emojis like that should be reported - it's got to be against Talk Guidelines, surely?

There is no specific guidance in the Talk Guidelines about how to use the Reactions (I checked).

I know it sounds ridiculous that we should need guidelines on it.

But because the Laugh is so commonly abused to upset people (as we are beginning to see) it either needs to be policed/moderated or removed, because otherwise what's the point in policing/removing other forms of bullying on the threads, if we're letting this type go.

I don't think mumsnet HQ are monitoring the way the Reactions are used at all. I don't know if they even have a way to search/filter them, in the way they can for key words.

So moderating the use of these things is going to be really hard, if not impossible

Yes. Agreed. I suspect this is the case. They should really just remove it. It is being used to mock people, and I suspect the posters know it is hard to moderate, so they are doing it with impunity. I did report the individual involved, but not sure what the mods are going to do.

Differentstarts · 18/01/2025 10:52

I now have another person putting laughing emojis on every single one of my posts on my recent thread iv tagged them and said if you have something useful to say please speak up instead of being so childish and nasty and she just did another laughing emoji

That’s no good. I think all you can do is report and explain. And also think about what a sad life that person has who is doing that stuff. Maybe they don’t have much to contribute, so all they can do is mock others who do.

Differentstarts · 18/01/2025 11:16

How do I contact mumsnet as they have taken my thread down as apparently it's not helping anyone but haven't messaged me. There was some really helpful advice on there but was taken over by bullies yet it's my thread that gets removed

Differentstarts · 18/01/2025 11:18

Yet I have pages of someone sending laughing emojis but nothing done @HebeMumsnet @mnhq

Put their usernames on this thread. I would.

You can report your own post (maybe the one with the images of people laughing at your post) and ask them to look into these users misusing the reactions.

I've seen on other threads people complaining about their serious posts being laughed at so it seems to be a thing that is catching on. Not good.

Thankyou Mumsnet have removed the whole thread as apparently it's not helpful iv found their email but haven't heard anything back yet

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 18/01/2025 11:51

I don't mind any of them. I've used the 'laugh' one a couple of times because the poster was genuinely funny and self-deprecating. I like that sort of wit.

What I do wish we had is something to show sympathy. The 'love'' emoji is wrong for this. We have so many for showing appreciation but absolutely nothing for support and I think that's wrong.

I recognise one from that pair and they were bullying a poster on weight loss yesterday.
