Get rid of the Laugh reaction

LetsNCagain · 21/12/2024 07:46

We don't need the Laugh reaction.
I've now only had it had used mockingly.

Specifically for example, in a thread where the op is upset about something and I gave a supportive message. Some loser gave me the Laugh emoji because they think op is being ridiculous and by extension, so am I for showing sympathy.

Mumsnet, please just get rid of it. If someone says a funny joke, the clap hands or thumbs up is perfectly adequate. The Laugh emoji is the only one that can be used in a mocking way

Edit to add Please!

I cant believe mumsnet has time to delete my comment but not time to reply to me

Hi all - we are discussing updated guidance for this and will update you ASAP. Please do not share usernames on this thread as it will result in the thread being removed. For now, please report concerns to us. Thank you.

Howbeit · 18/01/2025 11:58

I expect some will start screenshotting the reactions and posting them on the thread to call it out - shouldn't have to resort to that though.

Howbeit · 18/01/2025 11:58

X post!

I have reported concerns to you and asked why my whole thread was removed you havent replied also the posters repeatedly doing laughing emojis and name calling you have done absolutely nothing about

PeachPumpkin · 18/01/2025 12:02

I agree with removing the laughing reaction. I’ve been tempted to use it a few times (in a nice way) but I’ve worried in case the poster thinks I’m being sarcastic, so I haven’t.

I want an eye roll reaction.

Might get repetitive stress though...

Sorry, I used the laugh emoji for this....because it was FUNNY.

Or you could jut ignore it and accept that people are arseholes sometimes or maybe they even pressed the wrong emoji my accident.

Me too. I hope the decision is to get rid of the laugh emoji. As numerous posters have said, it is often used to mock and deride.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 18/01/2025 12:58

Yes, the sooner that laughing emoji goes, the better.

I don't mind any of them. I've used the 'laugh' one a couple of times because the poster was genuinely funny and self-deprecating. I like that sort of wit.

What I do wish we had is something to show sympathy. The 'love'' emoji is wrong for this. We have so many for showing appreciation but absolutely nothing for support and I think that's wrong.

You could write a sympathetic reply to the post and include nice, traditional Flowers

I'd completely forgotten that those are still there. Thanks!

I came to post again, having seen your update @BeckyAMumsnet, but realised I was going to post exactly what I posted before Christmas Grin

... which was to ask what the purpose of them is? I understand the introduction of 'thanks' as hidden gratitude (and I really like that idea) but I don't see the point of the others, when we can already respond to posts with (loads of) different emojis. Why the need for the others to be private? Especially when it's very clear that one of them is already being used maliciously.

No one is complaining about the emoji being used to laugh at something funny though. Only about it being used in a nasty mocking way like is done constantly on Facebook, by people who wouldn't be capable of formulating an actual response using words.

Yes, there's no reason for it to be done privately. If laughing at something funny it can be done publicly on the thread. If using the laugh emoji to mock someone bitchily do it publicly too so everyone can see you're a twat.
I wonder why mumsnet doesn't want the usernames of people using it mockingly to be exposed on the thread?? Seems strange to want to allow them to mock people privately.

Because using usernames would turn into a bunfight?

I've asked previously whether MNHQ would consider exposing posters who name-change back and forth between 'nasty' and 'nice'. Along the lines of "We've deleted LyingWitch's post as 'randomusername' as she changed names just to post like a knob'. I know they'll never do it but it would be very interesting.

In abstract, I think the emojis are ok as you wouldn't want a thread filled with "That's funny" comments but I absolutely understand your point. I've not realised the extent of the mocking 'funny' emojis until today but I agree, they should go.

What's the reasoning behind wanting people to be able to use the laugh emoji in a bitchy, mocking way privately and not having their usernames published?

JaneJeffer · 18/01/2025 15:41

There's no need for any of these hidden emojis. It used to be a discussion board but I don't know what MN are trying to turn it into with all their deletions, suspensions and bannings and now this nonsense.

SirChenjins · 18/01/2025 15:57

That’s good MN are discussing it, here’s hoping we can go back to having to post publicly.

The same as trollhunting, presumably.
Report anything that breaks guidelines or isn't 'in the spirit'. Maybe if they get enough reports they'll realise the emojis are pissing off more people than they please.

SirChenjins · 18/01/2025 15:59

A pp poster said there’s nothing in the talk guidelines about them @ErrolTheDragon
