Labour Banner surrounding the whole of MN

Just really uncomfortable with this. Feel like MN should be politically neutral - and the placement of the ad - all the way around the MN interfact - makes it look like Labour is practically sponsoring MN. It's been like this for a couple of days now.

I can't imagine you'd do this for any other political party?

And for the record - I'm a Labour voter.

It’s an advert

All political parties advertise during a general election

Prawncow · 13/06/2024 23:11

MN is a for-profit website. It’s not the BBC. Which also carries election ads - party political broadcasts!

MsFogi · 13/06/2024 23:17

Labour clearly wants your vote OP - you get targeted advertising, I am certainly not seeing this on my MN ads! So either Labour thinks they have me in the bag or they think I won't countenance voting for them. Whereas they have decided you are undecided or are in a target constituency.

Prawncow · 13/06/2024 23:49

I get ads for really ugly shoes with animals embroidered on them.

For a while in active messages there was

Media Requests

Have you left a male partner because you fell in love with a woman?

Promoted by Mumsnet

IwantToRetire · 13/06/2024 17:42

They're all being served by the same ad company, so I doubt Mumsnet even knew the labour one would appear until it did.

Sorry but just to repeat myself this is not like other ads.

Other ads come via google and you can click on the X in the top right had corner dismisses this and send feedback.

This ad does NOT have this option.

So this is imposed, where others you can dismiss.

Am now getting well annoyed with this Labour ad🤬Am on here on my iPad and keep unintentionally touching the ad which brings it up fullscreen.
It isn’t just any old ad as I first thought but blatant electioneering.

Some of these answers have given me pause for thought.

I am not stupid and I know that allowing someone to buy media space on your site does not equate to endorsement. However, I do wonder whether the size, style and dominance of the banner is in keeping with MN which is a site that prides itself on inviting people of all persuasions to discuss freely their thoughts.

As a Labour voter, I am not 'against' the promotion of Labour in a general sense, but I still think that MN should appear politically neutral so as to feel comfortable to everyone. And it's one thing to say that anyone can buy space - but that doesn't mean anyone SHOULD be able to. And I think political parties - even the mainstream ones - should be a no-go.

Edited

This, bigtime.

Agree OP
and you can’t delete it either

Shocking that Mumsnet aren’t politically neutral !!

That’s interesting.
So I am also being targeted and my constituency has been Conservative for a long time.
How about you OP or others that are being targeted.

Political bias (or not) aside, I'm amazed that so many people don't have an ad blocker.

Mine's free, and I don't see a single ad, on my phone or my laptop.

If ads on Mumsnet annoy you, just get adblocker

AnnaMagnani · 18/06/2024 07:10

@saraclara agree. I posted suggesting an ad blocker early in the thread and people answered 'but it's not like ordinary ads'

So? I don't see any ads on Mumsnet whether big, small, political or otherwise. Because I use an effective ad blocker.

Yep, I was bewildered by that response too. It doesn't matter what kind of ad it is. I don't get it, or any other banner, enveloping, or standard ads.

Tvtoo · 18/06/2024 07:50

As already said you need a good ad blocker but let’s not pretend, the whole blinking site is an advert for Labour. Any other thinking will not be tolerated you idiot!

Dont get me wrong it’s entertaining and often has great and useful advice, as well as amazing support. But yes politically, best to go elsewhere for rational info or less insidious political debate. Also holidays, often the holiday opinions read like they are posted by professionals. But apart from that - brilliant!

BIWI · 18/06/2024 08:43

I love this! It's like when left-wingers claim that the BBC is too right-wing, and right-wingers claim it's too biased left.

Neither is true.

And in this case, it's advertising. Which means that Mumsnet is getting revenue from the Labour Party, just like they are from any other business who has chosen the site as one of their media choices.

If there's nothing similar from the Conservative Party, it's because they're choosing to spend their money elsewhere. Not because Mumsnet will be refusing to take their cash.

(Although I'm hoping/assuming that they wouldn't take money from Reform!)

I wonder what data Mumsnet HQ shares about website users with political advertisers to help them decide on buying ads (and how much they're prepared to pay for them). How much does a political party get to know about the audience they're reaching by advertising here, before coughing up the £££££ for the ads.

Curious as detailed data about Mumsnet users would be super interesting. Eg age, location, family details (easy to scrape from profiles) and political leanings (easy for a gen-AI tool to scrape). I don't know what's allowed under the new regulation, but would be interested in how it all works.

Most businesses that accept advertising usually have a 'media pack' for would-be advertisers, which will give them the kind of information you're listing - i.e. demographics of key users etc. It won't include personal information about users though, as that's not allowed under GDPR.

But just as advertisers look for places to spend their money, Mumsnet (like other businesses) have their pitch ready, so that they can secure that money.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page (on the desktop site) there's a link to 'Advertise with Us' which gives this kind of information. See here

BIWI · 18/06/2024 08:58

Oh, and one more thing re the style/type of advertising that so many seem to be riled by - MN will have a rate card (again, just like any other business) showing the cost of different style of ad. So if, for example, you wanted to place an ad in a daily newspaper, there would be different rates for how many columns/what size of ad/if it's a whole page/etc. Sometimes companies pay even more to have the whole paper 'wrapped' in an ad - so the front and back cover.

In this case, this is exactly what will be happening here. TLP have chosen a particular style of advertising (which will be a style created by MN Tech) to pay for.

BeckyAMumsnet · 18/06/2024 09:25

Hello @SlightlyJaded thanks for your question. Mumsnet is politically neutral as a organisation. We're happy to run adverts for political parties in line with our usual policy - namely that we won’t accept advertising from companies, for products or in formats that we believe are contrary to our mission – which is to make parents’ lives easier.

There's more info about our ad policy here: https://www.mumsnet.com/i/about-us

I reported the whole thread under ‘other’ last night and asked MNHQ to comment
I’m guessing that’s why they’ve just responded as I did it to another thread as well.
I was feeling a little militant yesterday 😖
