And 'kiddie porn' to be added, please.

It is very upsetting seeing someone dismiss discussion about images of child abuse with a cutesy little throwaway.

This is Mumsnet, by parents, for parents, after all.

Thank you.

Hi OP

Thanks for sharing your concerns with us - we'll have a discussion about this in the office. Flowers

EarringsandLipstick · 27/02/2024 20:33

Do you mean the actual phrase OP? Or the way in which it might be used?

Child pornography - abuse of course - is a term that has a specific meaning and widely used eg court reports. I can't see why the term, inter alia, would be problematic in itself.

I fully agree re 'kidde porn'.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 27/02/2024 20:33

Excellent idea. I thought everybody knew that those phrases were unacceptable and why, but clearly not, based on some posts on a now deleted thread today.

I write court reports and my agency do not use the term 'child porn/ography'. It is viewed as unacceptable by my profession.

pickledandpuzzled · 27/02/2024 20:38

Images of child abuse.

Many people do not yet know the other phrase is an issue. It would be a great way to publicise it.

Professionally we would never use that phrase in a court report. It's images of child sexual abuse or child sexual abuse material.

ApolloandDaphne · 27/02/2024 20:40

I am an ex child protection SW and we always used the phrase "illegal images of children". Child pornography as a term is outdated and wrong.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/02/2024 20:41

Adding my voice in support. "Child pornography" makes it sound like it is a subset of pornography, whereas it is actually a subset of child sexual abuse.

DrSpartacular · 27/02/2024 20:45

Professionals do not (or if they are, should not) be using the term 'child pornography'.

I would like to see it addressed here too.

Exactly why the term should be banned.

Child pornography doesn't exist.

Physical and violent abuse in a sexual manner towards children by adult perpetrators does.

Dilbertian · 27/02/2024 21:26

Supported.

BUT the deletion message must spell out why 'child pornography' is an unacceptable phrase.

"Child pornography" makes it sound like it is a subset of pornography, whereas it is actually a subset of child sexual abuse.

A good explanation.

That's interesting. I was unaware and checked some (Irish) news reports.

I didn't particularly want to be searching or reading these reports but certainly it's still in use here, the latest being December 2023.

I can fully understand the reasoning. Thanks for explaining.

I'm anti-porn full stop, never regarding it as a benign or neutral act though of course accept porn isn't illegal, and anything featuring children is. To be the term is applicable as an insidious, illegal element of pornography.

EarringsandLipstick · 27/02/2024 21:35

Me, not be

AutumnCrow · 27/02/2024 21:36

Absolutely agree that 'child porn' and 'child pornography' are abhorrent phrases and should not be acceptable on a parenting website.

It was very interesting to see which posters were comfortable using it earlier today.

ADoggyDogWorld · 27/02/2024 22:50

Thank you all for your thoughts.

TheShellBeach · 27/02/2024 23:50

Yes - posters who've used these phrases from ignorance need to understand the reason for the deletion. I guess in some cases MNHQ could even use their discretion to hide a post and give the poster the option of having it deleted or edited to appropriate wording. That approach might be useful if eg the poster was a victim of csa perhaps?

scaredofff · 28/02/2024 00:30

I also fully support the op
Thanks for raising x

I think people just don't know this. I certainly had no idea that child pornography was not an acceptable phrase until I read it on here. I have heard it used for decades.

RenameTheShame · 28/02/2024 01:16

(I really regret I did not take it further at the time)
