You've hidden this evening's offensive, ageist thread, stereotyping "boomers". Will this be deleted? Can we have a robust response to ageism on MN?

  1. No comtempt. I have been rather polite given the vitriol repeatedly directed at me.
  1. I've already answered that and provided a list of what I am doing.

And again: nobody "blamed an entire generation". You have entirely misunderstood the thread if that is your interpretation of it, when the opposite has been stated, repeatedly.

sunglassesonthetable · 29/08/2023 23:38

We were trying to have a factual discussion about social and economic trends, structural economic problems, and also understand why people who have benefitted immensely from favourable economic conditions but as a cohort dropped the ball on future-proofing things to provide opportunities, security and social mobility etc for future generations seem to be so vehemently opposed to accepting they made some serious mistakes and have left subsequent generations to pick up the pieces, and costs.

It must have been a different @WarOnTheSlugs that wrote your other posts then.

Or perhaps you have expressed yourself really badly.

Because I feel like you've blamed an entire generation.

And?

They're a deeply unpleasant person who thankfully is abroad more than home. Which is a great relief to their family. They've become quite rabid in middle age.

Let's not also forget such gems as:

But as a generation, it is the most selfish and also self-righteous

They are objecting to the greediest generation ever that pulled the bridge up behind them.

I am sorry you feel that way. But it doesn't represent what was actually said, so you deciding to misinterpret the things that were actually said is really something only you can address.

I would politely suggest you sit down and read all your posts (if you have all day, as they are many and they are long) on this thread.

Your very first post that I noted was contemptuous, and in which you painted a poster (who merely mentioned a paywall) as being a despised "other" - that would be an older person to you (you don't seem at all clear on the demographics of these generational marketing labels).

Here it is: Do you want us to pay for your news subscriptions now, as well?

You are clearly very bitter, and as I have previously said, ignorant, and also very very angry. I suggest you channel your rage into activism, as many of the women in generations stretching back over centuries have done - but it is easier to sit on your bottom and sneer and point the finger of blame.

WarOnTheSlugs · 29/08/2023 23:45

Yes @Insommmmnia , continue quoting things out of context. That'll make you counter argument to the data supporting what I've said much stronger.

Although, where is it?

sunglassesonthetable · 29/08/2023 23:47

And if you have no knowledge of economics or of how international comparisons between countries are made - which is how evidence-based and sensible policy choices are evaluated - then it is probably a good idea not to try to start an argument about it. Especially not with an economist. 😆

I haven't 'started an argument' about it. I've disagreed with you on lots of points.

But I'm not going to be drawn into a data swap.off as much as you think that's the crux of the issue cheers.

Obvs in YOUR opinion. 👍🏻

WarOnTheSlugs · 29/08/2023 23:50

Oh dear @greenhydrangea . If that is the best you can come up with, I despair.

No response to the facts, the data, the economics. That even Mumsnet's response acknowledged: the indisputable fact that current and future generations have been impoverished to provide for the Boomer one, that made insufficient provision for itself whilst running our infrastructure and services into the ground with no investment. This is fact. This is what impacts the lives of younger adults now trying to support families (and pensioners!), and will impact future generations coming up behind them also.

This is more important that whether you like my writing style. This is the refusal to engage with the facts that I and others have raised.

What data?

I haven't seen you post any links to peer reviewed papers to back up your posts just a link to a media article

This isnt data its opinions

You can disagree all you like but your opinion does not have equal validity to well established and documented economic facts. So if you refuse to engage in discussion about such facts, I'm not sure why you want to have a discussion at all? What will we discuss? Your assertion that the sky is purple and plants are orange, and I should treat that as equally important as objective reality?

oh dear @WarOnTheSlugs

This is what I meant. No response to the criticism on here.

You won't acknowledge your attacks or personal jibes.
You won't acknowledge other peoples feelings.
You hide behind the data.

I won't care to mention an 'economic comparator' but I will point out that you hide behind data as a vehicle to make very scathing stereotyping attacks. 🤷‍♀️

You don't control the narrative of what is discussed.

You literally hide behind the data and don't acknowledge that it will upset people to be described in a certain way.

sunglassesonthetable · 29/08/2023 23:58

Be careful with so much gaslighting. Wouldn't want anyone to waste their winter fuel allowances.

Crack on with the hidden jibes.

You dish it out but you cant handle the criticism.

WarOnTheSlugs · 30/08/2023 00:04

Inflammatory indeed! 🔥🔥🔥

Very good.

greenhydrangea · 30/08/2023 00:18

This is the refusal to engage with the facts that I and others have raised.

I note a refusal in you to "engage with the facts" that the bulk of the thread have countered with. I note a strong ignorance of "the facts" - the actual facts - about the generation you are stating is the cause of all your current complaints. I note you don't have even a muddy view of history.

I also note, as have others, that you are angry and bitter and envious. I note that you also seem to have very little lived experience and an overlarge bee in your bonnet, about which you have wanged on intolerably and incessantly on this thread.

Personally, I have no interest in "engaging" with your so-called "facts", on this basis.

So spiteful.

WarOnTheSlugs · 30/08/2023 00:22

Again, a rant full of personal attacks, which has no relevance to the economic facts.

Rather ironic given the thread was set up objecting to personal attacks. Someone tries to explain the economic realities of intergenerational inequality that have caused resentment, and the responses are to claim data is irrelevant and resort to personal attacks. 🤣
