Mumsnet undermining breastfeeding again.

Just read the Mumsnet article on caring for newborn babies. It's sponsored by a bottle manufacturer.

Much of it is misinformation that will seriously interfere with mothers' success with breastfeeding. For example trying to get a feeding routine for a two month old baby. This is totally against normal practice for on demand breastfeeding.

Anyone aiming for regular naps will be seriously frustrated and will think there is something wrong with them and their baby. Night feeding is treated as if it's a massive burden that should be shared by using a bottle. The massively negative impact of inaccurate information and expectations is aimed at discouraging breastfeeding.

There's a 'helpful' link to another article on 'combination feeding' aka introducing formula, along with references to a whole lot of bottle feeding products you should buy.

The WHO condemns companies that use misinformation and pressure on mothers not to breastfeed. While it may be subtly disguised, that is exactly what articles like this are doing.

And for money.

2 years not 3 years -on no sleep- That poor child needs better nutrition and a solid 12hrs sleep like a normal nursery child (he’s not a baby!) oh and why are you drinking alcohol breastfeeding? That’s very bad. On those days ‘formula is best’.

The sleep thing is cuckoo. I have a theory it’s a
kind of ‘sunken cost fallacy’, they’ve spent so many years deprived of sleep to fulfil a parenting idea that they now need to believe there is a benefit at the end of it, or to get some kind of emotional return. There isn’t one really so they just come on here to make mums who did things differently feel bad.

Are you a man? You talk like one.

If you're a woman then the internalised misogyny is strong

Drinking a small amount of alcohol does no harm whatsoever. Educate yourself.

A large glass is ok whilst breastfeeding? I’m having a large glass :)

Feeding a blinking 3 year old every 30 mins also nlt normal: educate yourself!

It's curious isn't it how the human is body is so amazing, and can do so many wonderful things, yet the area in which evolution has failed is the one money can be made out of

Have a word with yourself 🤣

You don’t think money can be made from other bodily functions that cause issues?

Don’t you buy toothpaste to clean your teeth?

Or soap to wash your body?

Or medicine when you’re ill?

Or is it just breastfeeding you shit your pants over, if anyone dares suggest they had a problem with it?

You have a word with yourself. You’re blinkered by self-righteous zeal.

Many, many women find breastfeeding painful, difficult and restrictive. Others, like yourself, get on with it. Good for you. But don’t let the fact you’ve been lucky lead you to patronise others. We’re not imagining the difficulties because some company’s trying to advertise to us. A Cow and Gate ad didn’t cause my mastitis, or my DD’s hyper mobility, which caused latch issues and inefficient feeding.

Formula can be a godsend. We don’t need idiots wanging on like it’s a poison.

Absolutely. All crazy and all in complete denial. I’ve raised two teenagers and everything they spout is crap and makes some people feel crap and it really isn’t relevant so anyone they somehow get to should know it’s all rubbish and you’re doing great! (Unless you’re seeing a 3 year old hourly then I would suggest you re look at the bf thing cos it’s not really ‘working’ or ‘healthy’ at that point.actually really damaging. Give the kid a roast dinner and let him sleep all night 😆

But it raises your risk of breast cancer more than breastfeeding…? Oh no.

SueVineer · 12/03/2023 22:47

The article doesn’t discourage breastfeeding. Normal women are tired of being demonized for formula feeding. Bore off

Assuming that a large glass doesn't render you unable to care for a baby then yes, that's fine. It's recommended to wait a couple of hours before feeding but when you know your baby's habits that's not hard to do.

Mildred2point0 · 12/03/2023 22:48

But what about your increased risk of breast cancer from said glass of wine?!

Absolutely. Formula save millions of babies lives every day. It’s a great product- let’s stop demonizing mums who use it

My body doesn't produce toothpaste or soap so yes I buy it.

And don't presume to know anything about my BFing experience. It was far from easy to begin with and I don't consider that I was particularly lucky.

Sone women don’t produce enough milk either so they buy it. Some just want to buy it. That’s really the end of that isn’t it.

DNAshelicase · 12/03/2023 15:14

Around 5% of women actually can’t breastfeed yet you get dozens on here claiming they can’t. Most lack the support or the determination to do it. If you and your baby are happy then fine, but call it what it is, it’s not that you ‘can’t’ BF, you don’t want to

Your message is so rude and insulting. I am quite upset by it.

it always amazes me how women slag off other women for bottle feeding, breast feeding, nursery, sahm, working mum etc. When actually we are all trying out best and no one way of doing something is better than another way. What’s the expression….you do you and I’ll do me. I can’t imagine men doing this to other men.

I do hope all these breastfeeding nursery goers will be heading to the best private schools next year as that’s what’s best. 😅😂

And so were sky high rates of infant mortality.

I remember having a massive penny drop moment while bfing through tears of pain that this was one of the reasons so many babies died back in the day. That it wasn’t just infection, it was the fact that evolution dropped an almighty bollock with breastfeeding, when we evolved a system that doesn’t work well in such a significant % of women and babies.

Yeah, I felt so guilty and awful not being able to breastfeed my first. I’m so angry about it now - nothing wrong at all with formula feeding. Formula feeding literally saves millions every day

Fromwetome · 12/03/2023 23:00

@DNAshelicase I was a 30 week prem baby who spent 8 weeks in NICU my mum was also in ICU for 10 days after I was born and her milk never came in so I wasn't breastfed. Not to mention she was pumped full of drugs. You have all the answers so please can tell my mum that whilst she was unconscious and intubated in ICU she didn't try hard enough to breastfeed me.
Clown.

Sone women don’t produce enough milk either so they buy it. Some just want to buy it. That’s really the end of that isn’t it.

Most women in the UK (80% it used to be, not sure of the latest statistics) start off BFing. It's a minority who don't want to BF whatsoever and it's a smaller minority who genuinely don't produce enough milk. Most women want to be successful at BFing so the fact that most end up buying formula isn't really the end of it at all.
