Why so many deletions?

daretodenim · 26/11/2022 15:53

Three threads I'm on have been deleted today. I can't see why. They had personal info in them like many threads, but when I was in that situation previously and asked for my thread to be deleted I was told that feeling uncomfortable was not a reason for a thread to be deleted.

It seems to be happening more and more. On some threads I've even seen the OP say that she'll get MNHQ to remove the thread!
I post in good faith and know there are some people who don't. The deleted threads today would all have been useful to others, even if they were by hairy bridge dwellers. None were identifying.

Would it be possible to clarify for what reasons a thread will be deleted - and not? Because then I can have more of an idea which threads to not waste my time replying to.

OP posts:

Hmmm, yes, was just about to contribute to a thread, came off to check a dictionary definition of orchidectomy, came back on and the thread has disappeared.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 27/11/2022 11:43

Hello @daretodenim we always try and avoid deleting threads where possible but we take these things on a case-by-case basis. The deletion message should give you a clear reason for removal but if that's not the case, you can get in touch with us directly at [email protected].

Yeah the 'waiting for an ambulance' thread has been hidden too. Off AIBU. I posted quite a long (and I think helpful and supportive post,) around ten past midday, and the thread went 'pooof' around 10 minutes ago . Not sure why, but there were a LOT of deleted posts from some very rude and unpleasant posters. Maybe that's why... Coz it was getting out of hand.

I just came on site stuff to see if there was anything about this. Vicar, the OP, is a long standing mumsnetter and I can’t see any reason to doubt her?

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 28/11/2022 10:53

The ambulance thread was hidden while we went through reports (lots of personal attacks). We reinstated it but have closed to new posts because we didn't feel it was helpful to the OP who was clearly having a hard enough time as it was.

GCAcademic · 28/11/2022 10:58

It's not clear why the thread about the small child climbing behind the shelving in B&Q was removed, other than the OP not liking the fact that posters didn't agree with her. As PP have said, people spend time responding to threads; it's pointless if MNHQ are going to pander to people who don't like to hear different views to their own.

HebeMumsnet · 28/11/2022 11:20

Morning, @GCAcademic . We've had a look back at that thread. The OP did ask for the thread to go a few times, and at first, we didn't feel that was necessary. However, a little later on, there were quite a few posts that constituted really nasty personal attacks. We won't repeat them in detail here and dredge it all up again but feel free to email in if you'd like us to go through it in more detail.

Anyway, the upshot was, the posts were getting increasingly nasty and were personal rather than simply giving feedback or disagreeing in a civil way. We felt by then that we'd have to delete an awful lot of posts in order to keep the thread going but also, it had just crossed a line and we didn't think it was going to be retrievable really.

Hope that explains it a bit more clearly. Flowers

Sometimes Delete is the only option, but a lot of the time Clean-and-Close would respect the effort that members put into their replies.

I don't know if MN has the facility, but other groups I'm in have a 3-day sin bin for posters that descend into personal attacks (rather than just delete the post and let things just carry on). That takes the momentum out of the wrong direction a thread is heading in and lets cooler heads keep things on track.

Why was my opinion deleted. No swearing or nastiness. Confused as to why? Some clarity would be useful mumsnet!!!

ssd · 25/10/2023 19:13

I never understood why threads about threads are deleted. Unless they are being nasty or vicious, whats wrong with talking about another thread? Im not very computer minded, is this computer etiquette?

It’s school holidays, mn gets crazy and it’s not just trolls. Regular posters suddenly turn into mean girls who couldn’t care less about the real person that they are being vile to.

PaminaMozart · 25/10/2023 19:19

I agree that in an ideal world "a lot of the time Clean-and-Close would respect the effort that members put into their replies", but I expect this would be quite time-consuming and MN simply do not have the (wo-)manpower?

PaminaMozart · 25/10/2023 19:20
