Can energy/COL topics become like covid topics please

@MNHQ

I've already been called a snowflake for objecting to a flippant post about small business going to the wall, so no doubt this will be thrown at me again but can the endless energy threads/general cost of living threads all live in their own topic page which is already set up?

This isn't burying head in the sand but just means that people can continue to get light relief from MN (and fuck me it is needed) and then only read the COL threads when they choose.

OP posts:
ApolloandDaphne · 27/08/2022 09:32

I completely agree. The number of threads about bills and energy saving has become ridiculous and most people are asking very similar questions (as they did with Covid). Having them all in one place makes great sense as people can go directly to that topic for advice and support.

PeppaPigIsBacon · 27/08/2022 09:33

I’d support this.

Alternatively, I really appreciate being able to hide threads in Active without clicking on the thread. Any chance of being able to extend this function to the rest of MN? Then it’s a 2 second job to go down the list clicking “hide”.

Samcro · 27/08/2022 09:34

i remember asking for a topic when the war started. it was no,
so surely this is the same, I have just been hiding lots of scaremongering threads.

O11 · 27/08/2022 09:35

Hi MNHQ, I couldn't disagree more with this. This is a huge issue for people and it would be completely wrong to police where and how they discuss it.

Perhaps instead, a new board could be set up for posters like the OP where current affairs are banned?

roarfeckingroarr · 27/08/2022 09:37

PLEASE

MarshaBradyo · 27/08/2022 09:37

I concur

Time to use the topic for all the threads

EttieWarbler · 27/08/2022 09:39

Can't you just scroll past threads that don't interest you? I do - constantly.

Yes, using topics for threads, it's not about banning any conversation but just putting it where it belongs which is surely the point of having topics.

OP posts:
chillipenguin · 27/08/2022 09:45

They could do something like the "covid free" topic? Have a "Cost of Living Free" topic?

This would be ok with me if all other threads were treated the same. There are looooads of topics out there waiting to be used.

MarshaBradyo · 27/08/2022 09:47

The war topic was discussed and dismissed as in pp but this is different as a cost of living one does exist

It’s easy to just shift it all to there

The 'Corona Free Zone' only attracted 30 or so threads in the space of two years!

Yes please, I support the creation of a thread for people who don't want to discuss current affairs, but I strongly object to the general forums like Chat and AIBU being censored/sanitised to the extent that people are not allowed to talk about major issues that are of interest and/or concern to them.

If people don't want to read the threads, they can scroll on past them, or stick to the topic boards where they can discuss the things that interest them.

If MNHQ start moving everything over to the cost of living topic, then every thread that even remotely touches on those issues will get derailed by the self-appointed thread police screeching that people have posted in the wrong place. It's really tiresome, and may be quite upsetting for posters who are understandably concerned about how the energy price hikes are going to affect them.

We are all adults here. If you don't want to join in the energy discussions, that's fine. But please, just do your own thing and let everyone else carry on.

MarshaBradyo · 27/08/2022 10:06

Threads got moved to Covid topic didn’t they?

It would be the same as that

Indeed! AIBU would be dead if you moved all of the threads to the "relevant" topics.

The good things about AIBU are the variety of topics and the level of traffic. Please don't spoil that MNHQ by limiting it to mindless trivia only.

MarshaBradyo · 27/08/2022 10:06

Yeah, it was bloody awful.

Lots of people carried on posting stuff on the generic boards, and it resulted in loads of threads being derailed by the self-appointed thread police moaning that it was in the wrong place.

If MNHQ does decide to start moving things, please ensure that there is a large and visible banner at the top of AIBU/Chat etc, explicitly stating what topics are permitted and what topics are banned. It must be clear and transparent, otherwise the site becomes unuseable.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 27/08/2022 10:13

On the whole it worked for Covid, threads that were remotely about covid stayed on a general board, threads that said exactly the same thing on repeat were moved over.

quite upsetting for posters who are understandably concerned about how the energy price hikes are going to affect them.

But this works both ways, seeing endless doom (not scaremongering, but it is doom) Can be upsetting for those that know they are heading up shit creek without a paddle and just want some space away from it.

MNHQ move things all the time, to lots of topics and did for covid. Oh and feminism.

Ah ok. That suggests there probably won't be much demand for a cost of living free zone then.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/08/2022 10:16

Moving them all to the cost of living topic would help preserve any useful information and make it easier to find for people. But perhaps rather than forcing over all the threads, the Cost of Living topic could be highlighted or signposted to in some manner. I expect lots of people don't know it exists, or might struggle to find it.

Perhaps MN would benefit from a 'topic of the week' pin, which should never include AIBU, or chat. That way when we have widespread blizzards forecast, for example, then Weather could be topic of the week. Wink but at the moment everyone is talking about COL so that would be topic of the week.

It could help encourage people to post in the correct topics by learning that those topics exist and helping them find them.

Tbh I prefer it

I like topics and a big event tends to dominate and using topics gives people a very easy way to hide it should they wish

Yes, so those posters can avoid the general boards and stick to the topics that interest them. Or MNHQ can create a new generic board where the discussion of current affairs is banned.

You might think the covid boards worked well. I disagree, it was intensely irritating to see posters constantly getting jumped on for posting in the "wrong" place.

I very much like @OhYouBadBadKitten's idea of a 'topic of the week'. There are some fascinating boards on here that I read a lot, like Weather and Preppers. And Feminism, History Club and Chronic Pain. There's a tremendous variety of stuff.

gamerchick · 27/08/2022 10:29

I used to agree until the moment come where Brexit threads were allowed out of the Brexit board and not moved there when requested.

Some stuff gets on your nerves. Just hide them without opening.
