Mumsnet going down every night

Useranon1 · 13/06/2022 23:34

Why does this keep happening? A few nights recently (inc last night and tonight) mumsnet goes offline from approx 9.30-10.30. The app stops working, the site won't load, and online down sectors report the servers as non-responsive.

What's happening?

@justasking111 DDOS is denial of service attack. It's where an army of bots throw huge volumes of transactions at a website or service thus making it fall over or become unusable because the servers can't cope with the huge spike in demand (like 1million people trying to register for an account all at the same time, for example).

It's used by cyber criminals and sometimes business rivals to cause damage, harm and in some cases a cover to sneak in an attack on the underlying servers (where they leave code that can wipe data, steal data or erases programmes).

In other words DDOS prevention is a top, top priority for every online business, with dedicated programmes and servers to detect such an attack and try to defend against it.

Many big names (I work in IT and know a few but won't name them) at under regular DDOS attack. It's a fact if life in the cyber world, sadly. There are some sneaky clever bastards out there.

@MattTech Would it be possible for you to put a statement on Twitter or Facebook when there's are issues? It's very frustrating to not know why you can't log in. Good communication is key!

Totally agree with this!

At least then users know it's an issue at mn rather than an issue with their own internet etc

Thanks. It seems many people log in before bed putting a strain on the system

I am so old, that I think I remember MN closing down every night anyway. 😂

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/06/2022 12:12

@MattTech @JustineMumsnet
Echoing the others to let us know what is happening in future, here on the site and Twitter. Please.

MN has been unusable for me and others on several occasions since the last upgrade with little to no communication. To be told "Oh yes we know about that" hours or days later really just isn't good enough.

You can always check this by Googling "is mumsnet down" and there are sites that tell you if it's down for everyone or an issue for you. That's how I knew it was an non responsive server

I use one of those "is it down" sites too and that's useful when the whole of Mumsnet is unavailable. But often it's just the app or just the desktop site. It would be really helpful if an Admin or Tech Support posted a notification on some platform to keep us informed (even if it's just the "we're working on it" tagline!)

Mumsnet seems unusably slow overnight, and quite frequently during the day.

I've tried both my laptop and my phone (chromebook and Andoid) and it takes ages for pages to load. It also hangs my chromebook quite often so I need to reboot, and posting messages where you need to copy across from another tab (ie the Wordle thread which is very long) also hangs everything. It isn't an issue with the devices, as I have no problems with any other site.

Same here -thought was just me
