here

I've a couple of comments about it - especially the bf section (surprise, surprise!).

And the weaning section.

I know a midwife who has worked for over 20 years and she knows fark all about BFing.

Extensive time in the field does not an expert make

Peachy · 16/11/2007 17:10

Of course it doen't (but better than that claire wotsername channel 4 lark no?)

SOME midwives do know what they're on about though- there were loads on the Unicef course with me, for example- you can't assume that a MW doesn't know (or indeed that she does!)

moondog · 16/11/2007 17:27

Yes Peachy, but being an MW does not automatically mean that one knows about breastfedding although it should of course be a non-negotiable part of training.

I work as a salt with peopel with SN. You would be amazed (or maybe you wouldn't actually) to learn of how little the average SN teacher truly knows and understands SN.

This is a disgrace on a par with above.

Peachy · 16/11/2007 17:30

sadly I wouldn't Moondog LOL (Did you hear i got accepted for the MA in asd by the way? - when I do my PGCE I will know something LOL)

What I emant was, you can't assume either way that they do or don't know about BF- don't count them as experts certainly, but its wortha sking if they ahev done training as an extra as some really do know their stuff (my old Midwife for example now a trainer for UNICEF BFI itself!- was Chair of ABM for a while as well IIRC)

That's a really good point giraffeski- forgot that part of it all - they're not even supposed to sue endorsed EDD wheels, are they? tahts why Unicef amke their own

(Thanks MD )

moondog · 16/11/2007 17:39

Mind you, remember that professional MW journals are happy to carry formula ads so they are by no means blameless.

Thank you so much Justine

Good news that the talk thread has been pulled.

I'm still feeling somewhat disillusioned though.

FWIW, I am quite happy to be involved in anything that helps MN (and MNHQ ) money. I'm reluctant to be a part of something that is ultimately lining the pockets of an outside company and usually at the expense of parents who are being encouraged to buy things that just arent necessary.

1stTimeMUMsez · 16/11/2007 21:07

Are all people guilty till proven innocent? I can't believe the personal attacks being made against this poor lady.
Due to Breast Cancer i was unalbe to BF my DS, does that make me a bad mum? I used a mixture of tomeetipee and avent & my DS is doing great thanks to the help of my Midwive and professional support networks.

I am ashamed to call my self a MNer

hunkermunker · 16/11/2007 21:08

Glad the Talk thread's gone too.

Not keen on the wording still though:

"All of your baby care questions answered, thanks to Vicki Scott, the first baby feeding and wellbeing advisor to Philips AVENT. Visit Vicki?s new page for expert advice, answers and tips to make your life just that little bit easier. You can also ask Vicki a question and post your top tips for returning to work."

If they're all being answered by Vicki, what's the point of having anybody else posting anything at all on here?

Who attacked the woman?
This is about crap advertising!

hunkermunker · 16/11/2007 21:09

1stTMS, of course it doesn't make you a bad mum - why on earth would it?!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/11/2007 21:09

1st time - read the thread again

moondog · 16/11/2007 21:09

hunkermunker · 16/11/2007 21:10

She'll recommend Avent plaid, MD, just you watch...

OP posts:
moondog · 16/11/2007 21:11

Actually I used to think Avent products were ok.I had one of their pumps and some bottles. Now I hae a negative vesceral reaction to the name .

moondog · 16/11/2007 21:12

visceral

VeniVidiVickiQV · 16/11/2007 21:14

Will she give out {{{{{hugs}}}}}} when needed?

pinkspottywellies · 16/11/2007 22:03

Re whether or not Vicki has the experience, qualifications, answers or anything else to qualify her as an expert - as others have pointed out on here, people like Tiktok, Mears, Hunker et al have proved themselves on Mumsnet and earned thier place as MN experts. So far the advice on the microsite doesn't seem to earn Vicki that place.

NappiesGaloreisarubbishmum · 16/11/2007 22:19

um, just to second what vvvqv said (i think) id also be happy to do more to pay for MN, but am mighty pleased this sort of advertising is not going to be used from now on.

make some (shite) products. ill buy them. im a right mug, me, ill buy anything.

fruitloop79 · 17/11/2007 07:53

if you've got a hungry baby, feed them!!!!
