Isn’t it time to stop mocking people with poor literacy?

It’s a whole genre and it’s not really on these days is it? If it ever was?

Another one running currently. It’s a terrible look @MNHQ

@MrsTreglowan

I think those that criticise are never perfect, invariably if some smug smart arse starts a thread about others grammar and spelling that makes their teeth itch they make a mistake in their opening or subsequent posts themselves Pot and Kettle, and as I said nobody is perfect!
Reminds me of when I was in a public sector job and people were out to get someone (skin colour might have been an issue) A memo was circulated about said persons poor spelling and grammar, with department heads asked to comment before it was sent to Head Office.

I read it and there were several really obvious errors. I wrote my comment saying if I was preparing a memo about someone's poor spelling and grammar I'd check my spelling and grammar.

I'm definitely not perfect but it really annoyed me and as I was asked to comment I did.

The memo disappeared.

Thanks for getting back to me/us @LilyMumsnet

Obviously, I was hoping for a different answer but it is your site.

Good for you, ancientgran.

I know that when I read these boards regularly, I pick up information about word usage/syntax/context - and with that, spelling - and nobody knows that they've educated me, they just have.

Pedants Corner is a board that I visit quite often as it's a great sounding board for language usage. Those posters there really do understand and celebrate language and there's not a hint of judgement. Anybody can go, ask questions about the knottier aspects of English language and there will be answers.

AIBU is a bit of a bunfighty place with such obviously inadequate and self-important posters who will impotently launch themselves - unasked - to correct other posters' SPaG.

If SPaG were of genuine concern then the tremendous educational resource that is Pedants Corner could possibly be replicated on AIBU (for enhanced traffic) with no disparagement or hurt feelings caused. Very much an unfavourable comparison between Verve Cliquot and... used engine oil.

I love Pedants’ corner. Full of love for language and not nasty at all. I often lurk there.

@RickiTarr
Honestly we just found it so funny, I can’t explain why but it tickled us for a long time that nearly every second word was spelt wrong. We don’t know the person who posted the advertisement, we didn’t analyse the reasons for the poor spelling it just really made us laugh. Nothing more nothing less

RickiTarr · 16/03/2021 18:13

Well I can’t argue with that @Clunt although obviously I have a very different opinion. There is never any point in trying to recruit the opposition in questions of taste and taste alone.
