Hi folks,

First and most importantly, I hope you and yours are safe and well, and that you all stay that way.

After 20 years of unreasonableness, rofls, wtfs, advice and support, and the odd lawsuit, it's fair to say that we are as close as we’ve ever been to existential difficulty.

Like many ad-funded businesses, the COVID-19 crisis has seen us take a big hit to our revenues. The businesses who would normally pay to advertise with us are slashing their marketing budgets, but lots of our outgoings are fixed and we so need to find new ways to keep paying the bills.

We’re doing our darndest to find every single saving we can - lots of our staff have volunteered to reduce their hours, we’ve cancelled all non-essential services, I've taken a pay holiday and we will use every scheme and loan available to us from the government and the bank to help tide us over. But we still need to find alternative revenue streams to ensure we don’t run out of funds in a few months...

To put it frankly, it’s squeaky bum time.

I know this is a very tough time for many of you and some of you are only just keeping the lights on yourselves. We’re sending you our solidarity and we most certainly don’t want anyone to stump up anything they can’t afford, but if you can help, please do subscribe now to our Premium service.

We’ve banged this out as fast as possible in response to the current crisis and it’s definitely not the finished article, but it’s free of banner advertising, so if you’ve ever been vexed by those (or use an ad-blocker) this might be right up your alley. Banner ads also tend to make pages render more slowly and take up bandwidth, so if you’re surrounded by bored kids streaming with their mates, step this way.

We’ve opted for a price point that we hope is doable for most and which covers the potential lost ad revenue for the majority of users. We hope £4.99 per month or £49.99 for a year (less than a pound a week!) feels a reasonable exchange for the value Mumsnet brings you, but in any case you can unsubscribe any time.

Over the next little while we’ll look to add some extra features: things that people have requested regularly like editing, sorting posts by the OP, and reading offline.

Rest assured we remain committed to always providing a free version of the site, as we fundamentally believe that access to the advice and support Mumsnet offers should not depend on your ability to pay.

And if you can’t spare any cash right now… then of course we get it. It would still be very helpful if you removed any ad blockers or clicked on affiliate links around the site when you shop, joined our insight panel or even shared the best Mumsnet threads on your social channels whenever you can - it all helps.

If you have any questions at all feel free to post them here and I'll get back to you. We also have a page of FAQs that might answer your question.

Hold tight everyone.

Love

Justine and the team at MNHQ

Fourthly, you can not take a year's subs from a poster and refuse to refund that if you ban them. They are paying in advance for a service that that you will be withdrawing. Therefore, they should arguably be entitled to a refund.

If a poster repeatedly breaks Mumsnet Talk Guidelines, which is because their posting style and/or content of what they've posted is inappropriate, or offensive then they should forfeit the right to have a refund. If a poster thinks they are likely to be offensive or a GF, then they know in advance they run the risk of losing their subs. Or alternatively they could post in a more appropriate way.

With rights comes responsibility.

Trenzalor · 08/04/2020 20:34

Wouldn’t be able to afford it and if I could I probably just wouldn’t.

PepePig · 08/04/2020 20:35

I haven't RTFT so apologises if I'm repeating points.

The idea of paying for a more feature-rich version of Mumsnet is fine. However, my issue is that the website is incredibly basic. There's nothing about it that pushes boundaries in terms of an online user experience. So, with that in mind, what does my £50 actually get me, day-to-day?

For me to want to subscribe, there would need to be absolutely no ads (you can't have ads and a fee, I'm sorry), there would need to be a total overhaul in the design, layout and tonnes of new features added.

I think you should have a look at The Student Room. It's obviously for a much younger audience, but it has a lot more opportunity for individualism. Users can earn badges depending on how useful their advice is. They used to have a neg and pos rep system, which I think was useful, to be honest (keep it anonymous and it allows the most 'agreed' upon posts to really stand out).

You can't just add a few basic features and expect people to shell out £50. I mean, even look at the range of emojis that the website has. It's shit and out of date.

Curlycupid · 08/04/2020 20:38

Yep, don't get how you can have over £8m in reserves in 2018 but then suddenly be down a hole 3 weeks into a crisis after making all the cost savings you can. I know cash does not equal reserves, you have told me you have a bunch of fixed costs, and you've said that there has been some capital restructuring and some investment, but where is your planning? Your safety net? It's only 3 weeks!

I can't believe you've lost all your ad revenue. And you're assuming that 10% of people will pay up £50. You said you earned £7 odd million in ad revenue last year. So in effect you're looking for 10% of your 1.5m subscribers to pay you £7.5 million, which will more than replace your current revenue stream? At this point in time when people are losing their jobs?

I've been a mumsnet user for many years in a number of guises but this just seems like increadibly bad management and borderline taking the piss. So thanks but no thanks, I'll be taking myself elsewhere.

Thornhill58 · 08/04/2020 20:39

Editing will be great. You are the only place that doesn't have that facility.

Pumpkintopf · 08/04/2020 20:40

Justine I know you mentioned you have a loan in place but presumably you'd be eligible to apply for the Government's Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan scheme (CBILS). Based on your turnover as posted upthread you'd be eligible for a loan of up to £5 million.

NobdieTheNob · 08/04/2020 20:41

I am, obviously, a nobdie, so my opinion is not that important. However, I like the basic-ness of the site. I don't have any other social media, or even a smartphone. So it suits me that the site is very straightforward. I still use the [emojis], and think the site as a whole is decidedly not shit. Its straightforwardness is an essential part of its charm, IMO.

However, I still can't pay £50 per year for it Sad

We have a loan and as such we've been advised to negotiate with our current loan providers, which we've done, rather than access the new scheme.

Done.

daisychain01 · 08/04/2020 20:50

I think posters would be taking their life into their hands if this feature were to be introduced on MN.

The Student Room, if it is like it was when I used it last, is quite a benign and friendly site.

MN has a high incidence of pile-ins, nastiness, bullying and ganging up, especially new posters, who didn't say something exactly the way the MN posse dictates. So you can only imagine how awful someone would be made to feel if a hoard of marauding MNers got their claws in.

XingMing · 08/04/2020 20:53

I don't have a problem with subscribing: I already have subs to three daily papers, and frankly MN is more entertaining and interesting than all of them put together. I was an ad blocker but am happy to pay a fee. I enjoy the diversity of the site, and FOR ME, it is worth a contibution. When I lived in the US, in the 80s I pledged money to support public radio, because I valued it. If it makes your life better, why wouldn't you pay a small amount? Less than the price of a cup of coffee each week...

SciFiScream · 08/04/2020 20:55

I'd pay. If by my paying it protected all the content for everyone unable to pay.

I wouldn't want special treatment or perks. Just a well run site.

I want FWR to be here for all women always. I've learnt so much. I want the women there to have more freedom to speak about differences between sex and gender without fear of being banned.

The budgeting threads and being green threads. All wonderful. So useful for so many people.

I think you've got the price point wrong though. I wouldn't think twice at £2.99 per month. £4.99 per month makes me Hmm

vanillandhoney · 08/04/2020 20:56

Do you honestly not think it's a bit unfair to be asking people to shell out money for your website that has a monthly wage bill that's over 10x most people's ANNUAL household income at a time where many are struggling to even put food on the table?

NobdieTheNob · 08/04/2020 20:58

Less than the price of a cup of coffee each week

@XingMing I can't afford to buy a cup of coffee each week at the moment, as I currently have no income. Shocking but true.

Presumably you'll be fine then as a (up to) £5 million loan would be enough to keep the site going for a long time.

BIWI · 08/04/2020 21:00

@Purpleclownsuit

Oh, I didn’t realise I had to have a business plan to comment on my surprise at how basic the site seems for such a large amount of employees.

Well shows how much you know about running a business like Mumsnet then, doesn't it? Hmm

cavabiensepasser · 08/04/2020 21:03

@JustineMumsnet

Why don't you go and ask the TRA for money, considering you pander to them so much?

You censor the FWR board, you banned several respected, knowledgeable, truthful posters for simply stating facts. How can I hand my money over, given that you're quick to ban women who do their damn best to defend women's rights?!

How can I hand my money over to you if there's a risk of my data being stolen by TRA and plastered all over Twitter?!

Biscuit
Purpleclownsuit · 08/04/2020 21:03

@BIWI

Crikey, now we need to be Mumsnet business experts to express surprise at the quality of the site compared to number of employees? Is it dark up there in Justine’s bumholey? 😂😂😂

BIWI · 08/04/2020 21:05

Well it's pretty stupid to make comments about a business you clearly know nothing about!

AgeLikeWine · 08/04/2020 21:05

Asking MN users, the people who generate the content for the site, to pay a subscription for the privilege of doing so indicates that MN doesn’t understand its own business model.

MN isn’t Netflix or the Guardian. Its users are the product, not the customer.

PepePig · 08/04/2020 21:05

@daisychain01

That's a fair point, to be honest. It's a shame it probably couldn't be used here because it was such a quick and easy way to find and read the best replies, and discard the trolls. It's pretty grim that students tend to behave more maturely than a website designed for older adults Confused.

XingMing · 08/04/2020 21:07

I don't ever buy coffee out of my home each week, because I make better at home. I can't remember when I last bought coffee. And while I do have an income, it is a pension and not a large one Nobodie.

HermioneWeasley · 08/04/2020 21:08

I feel conflicted - I like MN, I’ve been on it for years and I want to support.

But I cannot hand money over to a site that insists I refer to rapists as “she” if they identify as women. You also allowed that ridiculous TRA staff member last year to behave appallingly. If you move your moderation stance to be based on biology then I’ll consider it, depending on how secure I think my data will be . I won’t use stripe as I’ve never heard of it. Why would you choose such an obscure payment method whn you know we don’t trust you with our data?

GrumpyHoonMain · 08/04/2020 21:09

I agree that, at the moment, the website is too basic for me to pay 49.99£ for it. That is the same cost as Amazon Prime and Disney+ both of which provide far richer content. I think you need to be more creative - parents are still buying baby / children’s goods. A lot of them value your reviews. Why not charge to access the reviews like Which would, or link up with the online baby retailers who are still selling right now to provide offers or packs similar to Bounty?

NobdieTheNob · 08/04/2020 21:10

Jolly good, XingMing. I only mentioned it because you compared it to the price of a weekly cup of coffee Confused.
