Introducing AIBU voting

TomMumsnet · 17/06/2019 13:25

Hi all,

We're testing out a new feature on AIBU. From today, a few randomly selected Mumsnet users will be able to access a voting function on AIBU posts.

We're testing the vote function because in user feedback lots of you asked for a quick way to answer an AIBU post (essentially; YABU or YANBU).
The general thinking was that this would encourage more interaction - so we're trying it out from today, let's see how it goes.

It won't show on all AIBU posts but you should see it on a few - and importantly, the OP will be able to turn on (or off) the voting function themselves.

Hopefully you'll find it useful - and as ever, we'd love to hear your feedback - so please give it a try, and let us know what you think in the comments below.

Oh, and if you really aren't a fan then no problem, just head over to your Talk preferences and you'll be able to switch off (and back on) the voting feature.

Thanks
MNHQ

I don't think adding this will decrease picky snarky comments, it just adds another layer of (anonymous) judgement.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2019 13:18

Yes. You'll know XX people who think you are unreasonable but who can't be arsed to explain why or suggest anything.

SoupDragon · 18/06/2019 13:18

Basically, it's a vote that says "you're an idiot".

SoupDragon · 18/06/2019 13:19

I've turned it off so everything is back to normal as far as I'm concerned. I assume it will remain an option rather than compulsory viewing.

iwantittobesunny · 18/06/2019 13:36

How can you turn it off? I can see the vote sign displayed on the thread, and I can vote, but don't see anything that enables you to turn it off.
I attempted to start a thread to see how this works, but couldn't see anything to suggest I want it activated or not. It's very confusing.

HelenaDove · 18/06/2019 13:48

it makes it look like the comments section of a cheap newspaper site.

BIWI · 18/06/2019 13:55

FFS. Dumbing down and cutting down on interaction.

You really don't listen, @MNHQ, do you?

ScottishDoll · 18/06/2019 14:40

Jesus H. Christ.

Just clicked on a thread asking about a sick child with terminal cancer and what is right under the OP - the big clicky AIBU, yes or no? Could that be any more crass?

That turns my stomach MNHQ. Please do not do this, get rid of the idiot button.

Ugh. No. @TomMumsnet, please reconsider this, or at least have a think about how it’s going to work re sensitive topics given how many people post in AIBU ‘for traffic’.

HelenaDove · 18/06/2019 14:47

Ive just seen that thread and those are exactly my thoughts.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2019 14:48

@TomMumsnet
This is clearly an entirely inappropriate move. It exactly illustrates why this is a bad idea.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 18/06/2019 14:52

And please note on the thread quoted by ScottishDoll there are 160+ clicks and only 11 comments. So engagement isnt really climbing much. I simply clicked without responding as well as it's slightly uncomfortable and emotive so clicking lets me off the hook.

This function will do the opposite of what you intend. As well as being very tacky.

ScottishDoll · 18/06/2019 14:54

Agreed, I just left the thread, no clicking. Can't bear to look at it.

NiktheGreek · 18/06/2019 14:59

You really haven't thought this through have you MNHQ?? I mean what is the actual point of it? It doesn't add anything meaningful to the user experience.

SilverySurfer · 18/06/2019 15:15

ScottishDoll Totally agree - it's really inappropriate. I read that thread but did not vote and TBH don't think the OP of the thread should have used the vote option.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/06/2019 15:33

Jesus.
I said my bit yesterday and left the thread but pleased to see voices of reason being reasonable.
Also chuckling at the HQ parody of an AIBU
OP (Tom) we think A
Vast majority of posters "that's a really bad idea and here's why"
Minority "oh yeah love it yeah innit"
OP (Tom) "thank you to those who have supported me, even though everyone else days IABU I'm not"

Will we have to have a Justine thread soon to tell us to behave?
It's been a while.

C8H10N4O2 · 18/06/2019 16:00

Based on an early candidate using voting, will there be an third option? YABU, YANBU and "Bollocks"?

I'm agnostic on voting/like buttons but I'm not sure AIBU was a good place to pilot.

C8H10N4O2 · 18/06/2019 16:02

Those of you with the option - what is the default behaviour? Do you have to select an option to post, or is the default behaviour to include voting. Making it default behaviour would seem like a sub optimal solution.

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 18/06/2019 16:23

Havent rtft but I don't agree that it will encourage more interaction.

It will encourage more clicks, for sure, as people who might not have bothered to make a written post probably could be bothered to click.

More clicks = more revenue. Clever huh.

BIWI · 18/06/2019 16:38

Oh. . Of course. It's all about the clicks, isn't it? Just a revenue-generating 'innovation' Sad

So nothing about what MNetters might want/like, hence no discussion with us before implementing ig.

BIWI · 18/06/2019 16:39

It.

Perhaps implementing ig might be better.

SilverySurfer · 18/06/2019 16:48

Perhaps it could be expanded to:

AIBR - AIBU - a Troll - a PBP - a Reverse?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2019 16:49

It would be nice to get answers to the questions I asked first thing this morning.

MauisHouseOnMaui · 18/06/2019 16:53

No one from @MNHQ seems to want to discuss the negative comments about this.

MoobaaMoobaa · 18/06/2019 17:09

Yesterday 22:27 mabelsgarden

@SoupDragon

Which is exactly the same as like/dislike or up/down voting whatever you wish to call it

It's really not

I am guessing you have not been given the ability to do it?

Someone asked about the meaning of dumbing down.............

and yes BIWI I agree with you, users opinions don't count any more.

The next thing will be having the option to only read OPs posts. Which sometimes I think would be useful but then I remember the many time I've read insightful, informative, funny and supportive posts, on threads. All of which I'd have missed if I'd only been arsed to read the OPs posts.
