Please could you include Scotland in your education section. We don't have Reception, SATS, league tables or bands.

I did ask you nicely at the beginning of 2003 and emailed you lots of info .

My ds was 6 months at the time.

Now he's actually starting Primary 1 in August and I would have liked to have had a MN perspective on what to expect.

There are quite a lot of Scottish mumsnetters and we would appreciate the different education system being acknowledged.

The information is out there.

There are a few Scottish teachers on here too who could help you out of you hit a brick wall.

Your information on English schooling is great, something comparable for north of the border would be fab.

Oh hear hear bobsmum. The assumption that everywhere follows the English system is pretty irritating to put it mildly, and the differences are pretty substantial.

November 2003 I thought I was exaggerating for effect, but I was only a few months out!! (Ok so ds was actually 13 months, but even so )

NP - oh yes - meant to add that too -

...or GCSEs, or starting the day after they are 4, or half term holidays in the summer term (suspect that may just be here, but still...)

Good grief can you imagine if they had the start the day after they turned 4!

An explanation of the Scottish system would be good for those of us south of the border too. All the P-classes and options to start in different years are confusing.

Trust the Scottish lot to go and make it all complicated.

You are right of course - has it really been that long ? Now I know you might find this hard to believe but our next big project after some talk refinements is the big issues guide and I absolutely guarantee you than when that re-vamp occurs - autumn hopefully we will absolutely make sure that the Scottish school system is included.

And just to confuse things: we have a grammar school here (in Scotland) but it's not selective!

I know some of the schools are still called grammar schools (hutchie, Paisley etc).

The only thing the possibly comes close would be Jordanhill School which is grant aided, but not selective (except by mega-mortgage ) but that's the only one in the country I can think of.

A Scottish education topic would be most excellent! I never tire of pointing out to the British international schools here that they use the English curriculum, there is no British curriculum. Petty, I know, but it gives me pleasure.

so not the same as P1

No Primary 1 is 4.5 - 5.5 which is a big difference when you get to know a four year old. Hence all the panicked posts from mums in England about "summer born" children.
