I know it has been requested before but AGAIN, will you please monitor what you put in your thread titles?

Okay offensive was the wrong word but I disagree that people should monitor what they say on thread titles unless if is obviously meant to be offensive.

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 21:09

No I think that is a crap analogy

I find THAT offensive

oliveoil · 21/06/2007 21:10

anyway we have had these threads before and nobody takes any notice so I don't know why I bother

OP posts:
newlifenewname · 21/06/2007 21:12

Explain please. I thought it was alright as analogies go. It was deliberately, um, blunt.

newlifenewname · 21/06/2007 21:14

But.. I was careful not to make it pointed F&Z as I see we have opposing viewpoints

southeastastra · 21/06/2007 21:14

sometimes news stories upset people so much that they need to talk about it then and there, and type what they feel maybe without thinking of the title fully

and i know my 13 year old son would be more drawn to look at a title with bum sex in it rather than the 'in the news title'

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 21:19

LOL at blunt and not pointed

it seems offensive to me to compare a tragedy on the street with a discussion on a website

we aren't asking for censorship on this kind of news topic, nor for the victims to be a little less upsetting for our benefit, just some consideration for other posters on here and how they feel about having extremely emotive subjects constantly and repeatedly thrust into their gaze in this way on a chat forum

I think apart from anything else it makes the subject lose its power to shock

and as I said before it feels disrespectful

doggiesayswoof · 21/06/2007 21:20

100% agree with F&Z oliveoil and others.

newlifenewname maybe it's not a great analogy because it's actually about CHOICE - posters can choose to name their thread anything they like, and I for one would appreciate it if people gave thread titles a bit of thought first.

I don't think you can compare that to inadvertently witnessing a car crash

I'm going to give mn a little break I think.

newlifenewname · 21/06/2007 21:25

lol in a good way or bad way Franny? I don't like the thought of upsetting Santa

You don't have a choice about the RTA same as you don't have a choice about what comes up in Active Convos surely? We can't censor what others do/have happen to them even with threads like this.

So, why try and avoid reality when that reality may just result in someone taking positive action.

I'm not trying to be troublemaker-ish. I really don't get this 'I'd rather not see' thing.

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 21:27

LOL I am not laughing at you in a bad way newlife (you are always on Santa's list of good children)

I think doggie has it when she says that others can choose what / how they post

and doggie I think a break can be a good thing when the need arises, but hope you come back

southeastastra · 21/06/2007 21:30

i have been totally shocked by some news stories and have posted, in haste, on here without thinking the title through. we're not journalists, so don't maybe instintively think whether a title would offend.

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 21:33

Erm I feel like I and others have explained but if it hasn't been clear, I would rather the general subject was mentioned in the thread rather than the gruesome details because:

I can then see what the thread is about and choose not to read further if I am not feeling up to hearing the details at that particular time - and someone else suggested this was overly fragile earlier, but all I can say is that if you have the stomach for tortured children over your cornflakes in the morning, then I think this is possibly an unhealthy reaction

A more general thread title allows anyone interested to click and read - if you need a graphic and distressing title to get people to read then

I think being constantly bombarded with gruesome graphic news like this deadens our emotions to it - there are ways of being aware of what is going on without watching or reading sensationalist news or having details like this flashed up constantly on a chat forum

I think it is disrespectful to the victims to have the details of their tragedy emblazoned in the title next to other more chatty threads

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 21:34

SEA of course, but in that situation I would think the poster would say "oops, yes, I was rather upset when i posted" rather than "you bunch of namby pambies who don't give a toss about other people's suffering"

to paraphrase a bit

oliveoil · 21/06/2007 21:34

this thread is a disgrace

OP posts:
Boco · 21/06/2007 21:46

I agree, if a thread title is very graphic and upsetting I'm unlikely to click on it - it feels sensationalist and unneccesary - i'm far more likely to click on a news thread that just states broadly the topic.

There are people using this site with a variety of issues and problems who could be stressed by an overly graphic title.

Franny isn't asking for censorship or that these things aren't discussed - just a bit of sensitivity in the titles which seems very reasonable to me.

newlifenewname · 21/06/2007 21:49

I am swaying towards your argument, but really hope noone would call for censorship of the topic itself here.

Boco · 21/06/2007 21:51

I'm not aware of anyone asking for censorship of topics - just fine tuning of titles to make them less....shouty newsoftheworld headline maybe?

southeastastra · 21/06/2007 22:00

in the news - is a rarely used topic, more's the pity.

sensational headlines or whatever. surely it is better to be discussed?

FrannyandZooey · 21/06/2007 22:08

I certainly am not calling for any censorship - discuss whatever you like and I will stay off the ones that upset me (there are several topics on here that I simply CAN'T discuss because they are too upsetting and I would never dream of asking other people not to mention them)

just tone down the titles, please

Tentiebug · 21/06/2007 22:13

I'm really paranoid now, you keep mentioning the one 'in the news'. If its my thread inappropriately titled and causing upset I sincerely apologise.
I can get it removed if this is the case.
burstingug

maisym · 21/06/2007 22:14

no problems with the titles - at least you know what's in the thread & can read or avoid as you want.

popsycal · 21/06/2007 22:17

I agree with OO an franny

I also wish people would not put swear words in thread titles as I have my 4 year old reading them to me and asking what they mean.....

chocolateteapot · 21/06/2007 22:20

I really agree with this. I avoid the In the News threads like the plague but what's the point when the whole gory details are splashed in the title for me to see anyway ? I'm glad people do discuss these things if they feel the need to and it helps them in whatever way to do so, but I absolutely do not and don't want to know about them unless I choose to.
