The AMA topic (Sorry)

It needs a warning on threads that says similar to that in legal - that people shouldn’t take the advice as truth and MN can’t vouch for anyone etc.

(Unless there is a fact checking process to go through before you’re allowed to post there? Is there?)

I'm not sure that it needs to go, because it's here now and seems to be half of what's posted this weather, but I do think there needs to be a warning

Although the number of "I'm a perv of one sort or another ask me anything" threads is concerning.

Deleting it removes the problem, it doesn’t solve the problem.

I don’t understand why cotes post was deleted either.

But it seems as a topic to be a perv magnet.

I fully agree MN are in no way responsible for sexual deviants. However the AMA section is the equivalent of a nightclub offering free booze and wondering why people get drunk.

It wasn’t derailing, it wasn’t unpleasant, and it wasn’t a rant.

To summarise.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 16/07/2018 18:48

I agree with the OP - just something along the lines of "MNHQ does not validate the OPs of AMAs" - other sites do, and people might assume it is the same here.

With good reason, Janey

At the risk of being deleted myself, reddit are by no means alone or unique in raising concerns. P

immortalmarble · 16/07/2018 19:01

And the ‘p’ was my thumb whacking my phone, not an attempt at impudence Smile

paxillin · 16/07/2018 19:01

Perhaps as a quick and easy fix posters have to be a member for a minimum of x months, like on the Sex topic.

duckfuckduck · 16/07/2018 19:04

That's a good idea pax. (I still think it needs a warning though)

"posters have to be a member for a minimum of x months, like on the Sex topic."

Most people namechange for their AMAs, though. I don't know how that would work.

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2018 21:24

And now we have the stories of a woman who slept with her much older teacher when she was a 15-year-old student who feels it was an empowering experience rather than grooming & statutory rape.

MNHQ - You really must do something about this topic. It is not right that people are talking about statutory rape and child abuse pictures, inviting questions from MNers.

AMAs are supposed to be like web chats that you do with authors and politicians - You verify their identities before you allow them to do an AMA, then announce a time when their AMA thread will start.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/07/2018 21:28

Why shouldn’t she tell her story? And why should AMA follow any set formula? Mn isn’t bound by how other sites do things.

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2018 21:31

It is not a question of being bound by other sites' rules. It is a question of having a grip on what is going on in their website.

MNHQ have deleted quite a few AMAs including the one about child abuse photos ("kiddie porn") so I presume they are aware of the problem, even if you are not.

immortalmarble · 16/07/2018 21:35

Why shouldn’t she tell her story

Because it condones abuse of children?

WittyJack · 16/07/2018 21:43

Why shouldn’t someone talk about taking advantage of a minor from a position of trust?

Are you SERIOUS?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/07/2018 21:43

It tells her story of when she was 15, and she has a right to tell it.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/07/2018 21:44

Of course I’m serious.

immortalmarble · 16/07/2018 21:52

Have you seen some of the posts on the thread?

They discuss schoolgirls ‘flaunting’ themselves and ‘throwing’ themselves at male teachers.

One of the things I have always liked about mn is the fact it fights for the rights of women and girls. That thread is depressing. But moreover, it is wrong.

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2018 21:53

In theory, everyone had the right to tell their story.

The question is whether MN wants to be a place where people broadcast stories of how great it was when they had sex with a much older teacher when they were 15, or invite questions about sexual photos of children.
