Just in case you've not seen it, mn are proposing to delete pms are 60 days. They are waiting to see what feedback they get - either way - before they decide to do it or not.

It's quite a change, so thought people might appreciate a heads up if it's something they feel strongly about.

Thanks for this, I hadn't seen it. Will look now; I like my PMs, I want to keep them around!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 13:50

no problem :) I think many people will just ignore the GDPR thread (though I think it's quite important)

I’d prefer to keep mine too!

LapdanceShoeshine · 16/05/2018 13:52

& yes, thanks for starting this thread, Kitten Flowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 14:15

:) you're welcome!

It might be best to also comment on the official thread.

little bump as site stuff is quite quiet!

OP posts:
Glaciferous · 16/05/2018 17:56

I'd like to keep mine too!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 19:42

Glaciferous, is it possible, if you have time, to pop that on the main thread.

OP posts:
Glaciferous · 16/05/2018 20:40

I have, don't worry!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 21:32

Thank you!

Glaciferous · 16/05/2018 21:41

No problem. I think it is bonkers to be deleting PMs in this way and actually don't understand how it helps them to be GDPR compliant unless people have actually asked for it. Am also dealing with GDPR at work so fairly well up on what it entails.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/05/2018 21:44

I'm struggling to see the gdpr connection too. It's really just a hidden extension of the forum.

OP posts:
Glaciferous · 16/05/2018 21:48

It's not even that! It's stuff you have freely chosen to send to another individual and it is more analogous to email, IMO. And I do not see, as I said on the other thread, any email providers telling us they're going to auto-delete emails after 60 days!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2018 07:21

Yes, you are absolutely right.

MrsMozart · 17/05/2018 07:29

Thank you OP.

Maybe it's because a PM isn't seen by MN and therefore it can't control what's in them, nor can it respond in full to a person's request for info heldon that person.

It could possibly be a backdoor way of reducing space.

DawnMumsnet · 17/05/2018 09:43

Hi @OhYouBadBadKitten,

Thanks for starting this thread - it makes sense to have it separate from the main Data protection and GDPR thread.

We'll be watching closely to see how everyone feels about this proposal. Speaking as a fellow MNer (yes I have an old 'civilian' account, not just an HQ one) - I'd like to keep my PMs too! Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/05/2018 09:49

Great, thanks Dawn :)

mrsMozart, I wondered if it were a way of reducing disk space too. I think Glaciferous' reasoning that it is analogous to emails is quite accurate. Especially as I do believe than mn can see what is in pms if they choose to look.

Don't really care about this, but I don't see how it has anything to do with GDPR

Becca19962014 · 17/05/2018 10:02

Id like to keep PMs. I don't have a massive number but I do have conversations via it and have no way to store those and remember who people are after 60 days, sometimes it takes me a long time to reply.

I don't understand what deleting PMs after 60 days has to do with GDPR anyway. I've certainly not been told my emails for example will disappear after this time.

Becca19962014 · 17/05/2018 10:03

Sorry posted too soon.

PMs can be deleted by the user when no longer needed, they're not like posts on the forum which we (though MNHQ can) delete.

Sparklingbrook · 17/05/2018 10:03

Ever since Jeffrey I have read, replied and deleted my PMs as I go just to be on the safe side.

Samcro · 17/05/2018 10:08

i would like to keep them. its nice to look back and see them.\and we have the option to delete them ourselves anyway.

WhoKnowsWhereTheW1neGoes · 17/05/2018 10:29

I don't mind the ones I have got disappearing (I deleted the lot post-Jeffrey and rarely use them now) but I don't see any need for it and believe it should be up to the user to delete them not MNHQ.

paxillin · 17/05/2018 11:20

I don't mind, keep or delete.
