Vomiting in babies advice

ProfessorSprout · 28/02/2018 06:40

I was reading www.mumsnet.com/babies/vomiting and believe that there are several key things missed out:

  1. Over feeding a baby. Certainly from a BF perspective, if you have over supply you can over feed and this can cause projectile vomiting. I took advice from BF lactation consultants and Kellymom website. I would have thought this is far more common than pyloric stenosis (I have never heard of this), but definitely common.
  1. Some reference and detail on how sickness can be linked to not sterilising correctly, making formula incorrectly etc Putting too much formula into the bottom can cause sickness, and bacteria from bottles and dummies can also cause sickness. This is only covered in the gastrointestinal bit.

I like that this page is here as my experience is that parents do worry about sickness. I think we’ve missed a trick with some of the key reasons. I’ve shared that over supply / let down link from Kellymom several times over with friends / bf support groups and is very much a “a ha” moment for people or “gosh my baby did that, she was always throwing up loads”.

Did you mean to post this in Site Stuff?

Sparklingbrook · 28/02/2018 07:25

Ah sorry I see why you did.

My DS had Pyeloric Stenosis and I was told it's quite common and routine.

Ive never heard of it ( even with being on the Infant feeding threads on here and on our BF Facebook support group, this hasn’t ever come up). Is there a treatment for it or does it just go away on its own?

I just thought it was relevant to highlight that there are additional reasons for sicky babies which perhaps should also be highlighted.

He spent 4 days in hospital at 5 weeks old and had an operation to correct it.
We found out afterwards we knew two other people with older children that had it as babies. They had just never said.
My HV also said it wasn't uncommon so it's definitely worth considering if worried about vomiting.

Thanks for raising this, ProfessorSprout - we're going to pass this over to our Content team for consideration, and we'll let you know if they update the page Flowers

A long time ago now. He was fine as soon as the OP was over and the vomiting stopped. All that remains is a tiny scar above his belly button.

The signs that something was wrong were a sunken soft spot, not very many wet nappies and there were little bits in the vomit that looked like coffee grounds. That was blood. And of course every feed coming back up.
