seriously, why do people report stuff? Obviously if it's defamatory or
offensive or a personal attack that upsets you then hit that button. But surely it's usually better to ignore and move on?

YY. Saying you've reported is just passive aggressive and in many cases troll hunting.

NotYoda · 17/02/2017 12:24

I think it's fine to tell someone you've reported them because of a personal attack.

NotYoda · 17/02/2017 12:24

I also think it's not PA to call someone out for their aggression.

NotYoda · 17/02/2017 12:24

PA = passive aggressive

BertrandRussell · 17/02/2017 12:47

As I said, I very rarely report anyway. I don't believe in deletion except in incredibly rare circumstances. And I think it's important to say why you've reported, because otherwise threads can vanish and people not know why.

I don't report trolls just because they are trolls.

I am quite new to mumsnet. I had posted a couple of links to petitions on threads that I thought they were relevent to. They were on a very hot topical issue in Scotland. I won't go in to detail here, but I was reported so much (very quickly) for putting the link in the wrong place that I was temporarily banned from posting Hmm
I have since learned that it was against guidelines so I won't obviously do that again but I did worry about what the motivation was behind the reporting.
I would only report for abuse or bullying probably.

WaitrosePigeon · 19/02/2017 10:16

I report personal attacks. That's it really.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 19/02/2017 13:14

That's a little disingenuous. Over the past couple of days you had bumped old threads either by posting "bump" or by posting on them. You also posted the petition link across more than one thread.

I expect MNHQ thought you were a paid astroturfer as that was the impression you were giving by your posting pattern and content.

OMGyoumustbekidding · 19/02/2017 18:00

Hello "it's all going to be fine" such a pleasure to meet you again lol...

Had to look up the astrotufer thing!!! Had no idea what you were talking about. Thought it was a reference to my lady garden. Glad it wasn't Blush If I could be paid to grow that I would take the money! All gain, no pain!

To be fair I do recall our conversation where you tried to shut off my opinion by calling it spam before I even posted the petition. You will probably recall ne questioning why your opinion wasn't "spam" and mine was.

I have commented on and revived a few threads about the referendum and the possibility of another one (you have been active on many of them too expressing your desire for independence), because I feel strongly that the issue was decided in 2014 and I am interested in people's current opinions on the matter. I only posted the petitions on those threads as some people seem worried and there is a lack of available info on what to do about it. I am not affiliated with the conservatives (who are running it) in any way and made it clear that I don't even support them although I do quite like Ruth Davidson if that counts Grin

I hope you haven't outed yourself as one of these people who reports silly things, because I am sure it wouldn't have been you and if it was it was probably just an emotional response to someone with a different opinion. It is such a shame when people can not have honest discussions on here without being shut down by others.

Mnhq have been lovely about it actually and said nothing about astroturf (which I have now learned is something to do with being a fake grassroots person). I'm going to just leave it there. Confused

PurpleDaisies · 19/02/2017 18:04

Who are you to decide what's a silly thing to report or not? That's the job of MNHQ. People are free to report what they want. MNHQ are under no obligation to act on them and definitely don't automatically do anything about reports. Any issue you've got with being banned or deleted should be with them, not the people who reported you.

OMGyoumustbekidding · 19/02/2017 18:15

I have read that again and I can see how it could be read two ways.

I was simply hoping that people would not think that it was her.

Of course it is down to mumsnet hq. I was trying to be diplomatic about it and to say that it probably wasn't her and if it was it was probably an emotional response as opposed to malice or the need shut people down.

Hisstory · 19/02/2017 19:15

OMGYouMustBekidding
To be fair I would have reported your petitions too.

lljkk · 19/02/2017 19:35

Only report because I'm irritated by fantasists & it's a way of venting.

What should I do about my fertility problems & have been trying 9 months I don't understand what's wrong. My 5 children all live with their dads. I just love the man I'm with now and need a baby with him but he is a total arsehat, if I'm honest.

OMGyoumustbekidding · 19/02/2017 19:46

The reporting in itself is not a problem, but as I said I question the motives behind reporting in certain circumstances.

I didn't realise it was not the "done thing" as I said I was new and there were a lot of people upset about the possibility of more division. I had found the petition and thought it might give people a positive course of action to help quell anxieties on the issue.

I obviously wouldn't post one again, however I have seen other petitions in threads (which I do not necessarily agree with) which have not been reported and I personally would not report one. I don't like to shut down other people.

I worry that if we shut off other people we end up in an echo chamber unable to see things from other people's perspectives. Surely everyone should be allowed to engage in important issues Hmm

I know this isn't the done thing on MN, but ROFL Grin That is a masterpiece

HelenDenver · 19/02/2017 19:52

If you say you have reported, Bertrand, MNHQ will delete that if they notice it (troll hunting), even if they also delete the post in question.

Sometimes posters ask who reported them after a post is deleted; if I did, i will probably say so.

BertrandRussell · 19/02/2017 20:04

"If you say you have reported, Bertrand, MNHQ will delete that if they notice it (troll hunting), even if they also delete the post in question."

I don't understand - I don't troll hunt.

OP posts:
OMGyoumustbekidding · 19/02/2017 20:05

I am not going to report you it'sallgoing to be fine but I do find your behaviour towards me personally unpleasant and quite nasty. I don't need to ask your motivation.

HelenDenver · 19/02/2017 20:10

Bertrand

You might not understand but there's a good chance it'll happen!

If someone posts "I have 7 children by 11 men and I am a right cocksucker", if you post "reported" under it, they will delete you.

If you write "I have reported your post as I think you might be identifiable" then they won't.

HelenDenver · 19/02/2017 20:10

OMG

Oh, please do report Fine. See how that works out for you.

MorrisZapp · 19/02/2017 20:10

I say 'reported' as a heads up to the credulous of MN that what they're reading may very well not be true. I'd rather just say 'I don't believe a word of this' but the rules don't allow it.

ExitPursuedBySpartacus · 19/02/2017 20:10

Hello. Is there anybody there?

ActuallyThatsSUPREMECommander · 19/02/2017 20:18

I think Betrand was saying she'd only report for unpleasantness not for suspected trolling. If someone has said something arguably offensive then it's fine to report and also post to say you've reported and why. It's only trollhunting reports that you're meant to keep quiet about.

I report fairly vigorously for spam - even from people who don't realise they're spammers, because if you let people get away with plugging petitions or their kids' entry to a bonny baby competition or their local playground's Just Giving campaign, or their own utterly brilliant children's book willy nilly then it will ruin the site. Petitions obviously are sometimes OK in limited numbers, but MNHQ need to use their discretion and limit the numbers.
