What is it with the place marking frenzy?

I'm fairly new here but beginning to find my way around. When there's an interesting post with lots of replies people start "blatantly place marking" all over the shop. What's that all about? Surely these people who've been on MN lots longer than me have discovered the bookmark option on a thread? Am I missing something here or do I need to start "blatantly place marking"?

I've just whined about the calibre of the actual trolls on another thread, now I get the opportunity to whine about deletion messages too. Grin
They're not a patch on what they were in the good old days.

Along with the xxx's and the lols and the huns and the "am I cow/bitch/slut" type posts MN is really going down the drain. Wink

Where do you see deletion messages? I never seem to see any, and it's annoying when something I've commented on just disappears.

When you check ' threads I'm on' Wonder.

What aggravates me more than the twee 'shameless placemarking' type comments is people who just post a single full stop. I have certainly placemarked in the past, but at least I try and contribute something to the discussion.

Dame thanks, I've looked there though and nothing... Am on the phone app if that makes a difference. Might try it on my laptop tomorrow.

Do it on the main site, Wonder. They don't show on the iOS app.

I don't get all the placemarking stuff either. I just watch thread and still get to see the deletion message.

I don't agree that there is a frenzy - I haven't seen this more recently than usual.

I also don't agree that bookmarking is the answer - I don't check "Threads I'm watching" only "Threads I'm on".

I do think that people must be quite slow of thinking if they can't come up with something vaguely relevant to say rather than "Place marking" or the dreaded "F".

What's the relevant figure, Show? 5%, 8% of users? Active users is that? It all seems fairly inexorable. In fact, I'm surprised it's still here. Smile

I reckon you should be girding your loins for a (forthcoming) scrap over Big Customise retention. That's going to be the real falling out. Wink

Maybe the people who want Classics can go make their own website that does not have these newfangled things like bookmark buttons?

They could call it Mumsnet Oldies, or something like that.

In the way of things, good, old schemes are usually called something like 'Original'. If they want to downgrade people, organisations usually put up offerings like 'Premium' or 'Platinum' etc. Wink

Or, indeed, the trans-Uranic elements. Loads of scope there. Grin

Actually bookmarking on the app only marks where you last read.

The "watch button" keeps the thread for you to come back too. I think it's a lot harder for people online than those with apps.

"What am on " is what you post on which last three days after your last post. If you haven't clicked the watched button it disappears. Somewhere into a Mn wormhole

There is the delete button too but I don't know how it works on the web version.

The best way to keep on top of things is to constantly delete unwanted threads. Makes it easier for you to find topics you like.

This is where they all are for people who are interested.

The other thing is people place mark to bump up threads where they think it should receive more post or help. Lost of people on Mn are like sheep. They gravitate towards the most posted threads believing they are more interesting. Sometimes they are, but most of the time it's the post that follow which makes it funny.

Ok, being a luddite here - I can see and click the bookmark thing, but have no clue how to access it again, to get back to where I was in the thread

Report
cozietoesie · 13/08/2016 17:04

If you leave the thread and then re-enter it, Annie, the system should take you back to the point you bookmarked. Smile

ah, so I have to follow it and bookmark it!
