What is it with the place marking frenzy?

I'm fairly new here but beginning to find my way around. When there's an interesting post with lots of replies people start "blatantly place marking" all over the shop. What's that all about? Surely these people who've been on MN lots longer than me have discovered the bookmark option on a thread? Am I missing something here or do I need to start "blatantly place marking"?

There is nothing like re-entering bookmarking. It just takes you back to the point you stopped and bookmarked. For you to continue the thread rather than scrolling through finding which post you last read.

Yes. Bookmarking is essentially you saying to yourself 'I've read up to this point'. (Like a bookmark. ) If you want to Watch a thread or post on it ( to use the Watching and I'm On functions) they're separate things.

PS - or you could use it to mark a particularly memorable post, I suppose. You can only use it once on a thread, though - as I recall - so most people use it to mark where they've reached.

You can use Book mark as many times as you want. Use it to bounce from the last point you read up to, to the next point.

You're quite right, Newes. I meant only that there would only end up being one bookmark per thread, as I recall. You can, of course, move it around as often as you like.

I can't on my phone. Shame, I love bookmarking.

For a minute I thought usual was really hoping I was ok. Was wondering which of my many issues she was thinking about... But now I realise she was just place marking.
