Mumsnet hack update - police have charged someone

Hello,

Many of you will remember last August’s hacking attack on Mumsnet.

I'm pleased to say that today someone has appeared in court, charged with offences related to the attacks (though not the swatting attacks) and will appear at Guildford Magistrate court on 07th June.

The Met tell us that the suspect has been charged with: “two offences of causing a computer to perform function to secure / enable unauthorised access to a program / data, contrary to section 1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and also one offence of unauthorised acts with intent to impair operation of or prevent / hinder access to a computer, contrary to section 3 of the Computer Misuse act 1990.”

The Met’s Cyber Crime Unit is continuing investigations into the incident, including the swatting attacks that also took place. We'll let you know as and when we hear anything further.

Thanks,
Justine

Why shouldn't they?

twirlypoo · 22/05/2016 09:17

I was just wondering about this the other day, great news - especially because jeff was so utterly convinced he was going to get away with it.

TrojanWhore · 22/05/2016 09:22

"And they swatted Justine AND just a regular mumsnetter"

The MNHQ OP is clear that the person has not been charged with anything in relation to the swatting.

And that investigations continue into both the hacking and the swatting.

Great news! Well done. Smile

Rebecca333333 · 22/05/2016 10:00

Thank you

WellWhoKnew · 22/05/2016 10:01

Good news indeed

TendonQueen · 22/05/2016 10:12

Good. More charges being brought will help to change the perception that this is a bit of a laugh and the people it causes trouble for don't matter.

NoahVale · 22/05/2016 10:27

i dont spose he shit his pants when found.
i expect he was proud and is proud of the infamy

legotits · 22/05/2016 11:27

Are we all attending court with our ?

howtorebuild · 22/05/2016 12:15

He will be employed by MI5 when he is released.

NotDavidTennant · 22/05/2016 12:29

Hardly, this wasn't hack of the century. If I recall correctly at least one of the Mumsnet staff had set her password as 'password' and others had set their password to be their username.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 22/05/2016 12:43

I dont think he will be proud at all.

He thought he was good enough to not get caught and boasted so during the hacking period. I think he will be gutted he's not as clever as he thought he was.

Youarenotkiddingme · 22/05/2016 13:11

Great news.

Gin

Let's hope justice is done and someone is held accountable for the swatting.

MrsSpecter · 22/05/2016 13:14

was forgetting that Jeffery was under 18. His mother must be so proud.

And his father too Wink

AugustaFinkNottle · 22/05/2016 13:15

SoupDragon, I queried whether comments should be allowed for the same reason that newspapers don't allow comments on cases before a verdict has been brought in. It may prejudice his right to a fair trial, which in turn may mean that the charges have to be withdrawn.

SoupDragon · 22/05/2016 13:30

How about all those threads about, say, Rolf Harris before he was charged? There are lots of examples of a case being discussed.

AugustaFinkNottle · 22/05/2016 13:35

The same principle applied then, SoupDragon, and MN pulled them if they got into contempt of court territory.

exLtEveDallas · 22/05/2016 13:36

And the little idiots names haven't been released, so it's not in the same league as other cases in the papers.

nanetterose · 22/05/2016 13:37

Not nice :"his mother must be so proud"
As lovely as it would be to think we can control our teens, the sorry fact is thst his poor parents might have done everything right - and still this happened!
Very bad form to attack the parents.
I'm glad they/he has been caught, l hope it will teach him/them something.

Lweji · 22/05/2016 13:40

Actually, commenting on whether parents are proud or not says nothing about their parenting.
Unless they had incited the boy to do it.

OohhItsNotHoxton · 22/05/2016 13:40

Fantastic news. Although it was all that palaver that got me back to MN. I still hope he's sitting himself tho.

ErgonomicallyUnsound · 22/05/2016 13:51

I love that the perpetrators are from Surrey. How appropriate
