Mumsnet hack update - police have charged someone

Hello,

Many of you will remember last August’s hacking attack on Mumsnet.

I'm pleased to say that today someone has appeared in court, charged with offences related to the attacks (though not the swatting attacks) and will appear at Guildford Magistrate court on 07th June.

The Met tell us that the suspect has been charged with: “two offences of causing a computer to perform function to secure / enable unauthorised access to a program / data, contrary to section 1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990 and also one offence of unauthorised acts with intent to impair operation of or prevent / hinder access to a computer, contrary to section 3 of the Computer Misuse act 1990.”

The Met’s Cyber Crime Unit is continuing investigations into the incident, including the swatting attacks that also took place. We'll let you know as and when we hear anything further.

Thanks,
Justine

I still don't get what's wrong with staying in your bedroom, eating wotsits, wanking and sobbing. That's what the school spanners did in my day.

cozietoesie · 21/05/2016 22:34

Good. Smile

Devilishpyjamas · 21/05/2016 22:48

Silly boy.

My policeman friend said they would make the effort find him because of the swatting (even if he hasn't been charged for that).

Newes · 21/05/2016 22:50

Jesus, some of you need to catch yourselves on.

Go and watch in the public gallery? Seriously?
It was a DDOS attack, not a major plot line in a John Grisham novel.

IPityThePontipines · 21/05/2016 23:41

When John Terry had his court case, there was a Mumsnet poster in court then, it was very, very funny indeed (though possibly unintentionally).

AdoraBell · 21/05/2016 23:48

Brilliant Grin

bakeoffcake · 22/05/2016 00:06

what an idiot! He must be pretty bright to organise what he did (the hacking) and he's wasted that talent in doing something illegal and stupid. Shame he couldn't use his talents to do something useful!

I'm so glad the police got him though.

CoreyTaylorsMask · 22/05/2016 00:31

Ohhh no way...I live in Haslemere - but I'm not the owner of a 17 year old!!

DailyMailFodder · 22/05/2016 01:13

He must be pretty bright to organise what he did

I don't think what he did was that difficult plus Mumsnt had left a window open.

Cagliostro · 22/05/2016 01:50

Fantastic

differentnameforthis · 22/05/2016 02:37

feel sorry foe them now if they're teenagers and have ruined their lives. Perhaps they should have thought about that before doing what they did. They caused panic on here amongst posters with the hacking and swatting attacks, many hours of lost time for MNHQ trying to apease posters and sort this out. I seriously don't understand the sympathy. And bright? Because they hacked a website? Pathetic, more like.

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 22/05/2016 07:02

I don't feel sorry for them. They caused a lot of people a lot of stress and there was a hateful element to it because they pretended they were posing for MRAs which brought back the F4J nightmare and posted things like RIP Mumsnet.

And they swatted Justine AND just a regular mumsnetter. I'm surprised they haven't been arrested for that too seeing as they admitted it on their twitter feed.

WaitrosePigeon · 22/05/2016 07:14

Good!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 22/05/2016 07:22

Not as untraceable as he thought! Grin

Bet he shit his little pants when the police caught up with him.

imwithspud · 22/05/2016 07:30

Great news!Star

I don't feel sorry for them, they clearly had malicious intentions.

LyndaNotLinda · 22/05/2016 07:45

I don't feel sorry for them. They're misogynist arseholes.

SoupDragon · 22/05/2016 07:59

It was a DDOS attack, not a major plot line in a John Grisham novel.

Except it wasn't just a DDOS attack was it?

Pipbin · 22/05/2016 08:02

I don't feel sorry for them in the slightest.

I've read the DM item (thank goodness otherwise how would I have know how much Justine's house was worth Hmm).
Just a question but what if Jeffery turns 18 between the offence and going to court, would he be tried as an adult?

Also, did they interview the other (middle class according to the Mail) victim.

Lweji · 22/05/2016 08:16

I wonder if it was police work or his mum reported him.

Anyway, it caused financial upset to Mumsnet, as well as the holders of the accounts he hacked.
Maybe not at a bank scale, but still a crime, and I think of interest for those who are on this site and particularly those who had their passwords published.

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 22/05/2016 08:23

Pipbin it goes on the age at the time of the offence. And there are no public observers in youth courts.

ParadiseCity · 22/05/2016 08:29

Great news. I just wish swatting rhymed with twatting.

Groovee · 22/05/2016 08:42

Glad they have been charged and will appear in court. I hope Justine and the other family who were traumatised during the horrendous incidents are ok and have justice done for them!

BankWadger · 22/05/2016 08:44

About bloody time. Thanks for the update HQ

ShelaghTurner · 22/05/2016 08:53

Oooh I really hope unnamed magistrate relative is sitting that day...Wink

AugustaFinkNottle · 22/05/2016 09:03

Thanks for updating us. But should you be allowing comments before the individual concerned has been tried?
