Is it worth perhaps pointing out to people that their entire posts might end up in the Daily Mail? Grin

I was a tad taken aback to end up on TV and print, and while it made little difference to me, it may be quite distressing in different circumstances for someone.

OP posts:

Maybe the answer is to troll DM via MN and then reveal all via DM comments?

I'll go first with an unlikely tale of how divorce gave me boils (with photos).

(New and improved night watch can deal with me)

Post in chat, name change and throw in some random irrelavant crap to throw off scent.

Did I say I live in Oxford with my five kids?

WaitrosePigeon · 27/04/2016 07:16

I'm really fucked off by the whole thing to be honest and MN being so quiet over it is really bad.

rumblingDMexploitingbstds · 27/04/2016 07:57

A mass mail to everyone who reported this yesterday said they did not know about this until the article was published, key figures from HQ weren't in yesterday and a discussion with them was needed. Which I'd think is why we haven't yet heard any more.

ButterfliesinSpring · 27/04/2016 08:10

I need to RTFT as I expect this is already all over mumsnet but those sick fucks at the daily mail posting a bereaved mothers way of coping with grief

I come on mumsnet and seek advice and support, I usually NC when it's sensetive but so what - I would still be traumatised if something really personal ended up in the papers!

I don't feel I can post anything in terms of seeking advice and support now!

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 27/04/2016 08:22

We have a thread about this at least once a week.

And people continue opening themselves up on the web.

The naivety is scary, really.

Unfortunately, all that is now happening with the explosion of social media is that the common man now knows how famous people have felt for years re: invasion of privacy.

It's not going to stop unless people stop putting their private stuff out there, in a very public place.

Obviously, I was totally against MN getting into bed with the DM like anyone would be, but what exactly can HQ do?

We know one long term MNer is a DM journalist, she never hid that. She's currently under (my) radar as she must have namechanged, and I don't think she ever leaked stories, but who's to know?

People need to be careful. You aren't writing to their mates in a private FB message, you're doing the 21st century equivalent of standing in Trafalgar Square on a box.

DailyFailAreABunchOfCunts · 27/04/2016 09:02

MNHQ - appreciate this all came to the boil yesterday later on, but it would be good if we could have some comment from you please as to what you are doing/have done about this - or if you intend to do anything.

MN is supposed to be a supportive place. It's also been a force for good - This is my child, Nestle campaign etc. If you let the DM continue to do this unchecked, then it potentially undermines the credibility of the site. It's a difficult sell: Please use the site and post here, yet be prepared for everything you say to be lifted lock, stock and barrel into a tabloid newspaper.

ButterfliesinSpring · 27/04/2016 09:03

Some of us have situations we don't feel able to open up about unless anonymously, - I honestly thought MN looked on itself as a forum for people to find support

It really should close down or somehow lock bereavement and mental health and relationships if it's fair game for DM to simply lift comments and usernames without even writing an article and publish it

Copied and pasted from other thread, a post from Rowan at HQ just now:

"Sorry not to have posted more fully sooner. A few people were away yesterday and we wanted to have a good burrow into what happened.

As some of you have pointed out, we do try to remind folk on threads like these that, like the rest of the internet, MN is not private. Posts are visible to anyone, which is why we regularly remind people to avoid posting any identifying details.

We would never encourage papers to write about sensitive threads on topics such as bereavement, and if they asked us for permission we would not give it.

But they don't need to ask for our permission, and rarely if ever do. (They did not in this case.)

They sometimes ask us to pass on posters' contact details, which again we would never do. (In some circumstances we might try contact the poster ourselves to see if they wanted to talk to the press, particularly if they'd posted something like a proposal for a campaign, or a complaint - but on a thread like this we wouldn't even have done that.)

We do understand why many of you are upset about this one but the sad fact is there is very little we can do to stop it happening, beyond encouraging you all to obscure identifying details and make good use of our namechange facility.

Thanks
MNHQ"

RebeccaMumsnet · 27/04/2016 09:18

Morning all,

Rowan has posted over here about this. Please do take a look.

DailyFailAreABunchOfCunts · 27/04/2016 09:20

Thanks Rebecca. I have responded to Rowan and asked if MNHQ can advise if they have been in touch with the OP to make sure she is alright. At the centre of this mess is a real person who is struggling with the death of her child.
