Anti-Religious Trolling On Mumsnet

I get that not everyone is religious and that some people are very anti-religious (some with good reasons).

But some MNetters are religious, others are simply curious. So how come so many threads are allowed to be derailed by anti-religious trolls? Today a thread about Good Friday was deleted because a troll came on. FFS, it's Easter! Threads about Islam are regularly derailed by Islamophobes. On a thread seeking information on Judaism in the Philosophy & Religion topic, a troll has posted LMFAO. Ok, serious question, why does the Jewish God make all men wear a funny beards? She continues venting for a few posts before eventually exiting the thread saying that she is on drugs because It's Easter, party time.

She is a MN regular, like most of the anti-religious trolls here. I have reported her posts but they still stand.

Trolls are not interested in knowing what other people think or believe. They have no desire to discuss the point of actual threads and rarely start threads of their own regarding their issues with religion or belief. They just derail threads in the hope of driving all talk of religion and different beliefs off MN. And they are succeeding.

Why are MNHQ allowing this to happen? Deleting threads instead of dealing with posters? Allowing blatant anti-religious trolling to derail threads that people may find supportive or informative? Is MN a religion free zone? Because if it is, that's ok. I just think that religious posters should be told. Then they can go elsewhere if they wish to discuss their beliefs.

FFS!! LEAVE IT!! Do we have to start going round in a circle AGAIN?? ShockShock

capsium · 26/03/2016 11:26

Ohfuckaducky there are many words and phrases that a belief is implicit in: Zeitgeist, aghast, bug, ghost in the machine, high spirits, low spirits, flabbergasted, flibbertigibbet, even the etymology of spirit, in the alcoholic sense, refers to beliefs within alchemy. Also look at the way imagery works to create atmosphere. The thing is, language is a translation of how we interpret the world. This involves beliefs.

BoGrainger · 26/03/2016 11:27

Ha! That was to emotion not you ducky...

My point, Bertrand about that thread is that the OP asked for people not to derail the thread and they went ahead and did so anyway.

The people wanting to debate could have started their own thread.

BertrandRussell · 26/03/2016 11:28

Can I suggest that we just stop talking about the 3 o'clock thread? There is an interesting debate going on beside it- maybe we could focus on that?

UmbongoUnchained · 26/03/2016 11:29

You must be very precious if you find "what are you doing at 3pm" goady and click baity.

My life experience did not give me a frame of reference to show it any significance.

Could it be also that your particular life experience gives you a particular frame of reference that makes you believe the intention of the thread title was to bait whereas other people's frame of reference differs, so they do not believe this?

"My point, Bertrand about that thread is that the OP asked for people not to derail the thread and they went ahead and did so anyway."

It wasn't a thread about religion. It was a thread about a frightened child and the OP was completely resistant to any non supernatural cause for the child's fear.

I remember being very concerned about the child, frankly, and did my very best in the thread to get the OP to be more open minded.

No Ohfuckaducky you haven't explained why you think it was goady, how was the OP being goady? The OP clearly didn't start the thread with an intention of having a go at you or anyone else who is a non-believer.

capsium · 26/03/2016 11:33

Ohfuckaducky oh dear! What I you going to be left with? I could probably give you many more, I studied some etymology, as part of a language unit at uni. Do you think you might want to reconsider your user name? Grin

^ Ohfuckaducky sorry if my joke offended. It just seemed such an impossible quest to avoid completely all words with any connotations to beliefs.

Aridane · 26/03/2016 11:41

I am an atheist, didn't see the 3pm thread, just this one, and actually find ohfucky's posts on even this thread inflammatory and offensive.

Agree with OP.

Loved the post about not chasing the pizza delivery guy down the road to return pizza leaflets as not liking pizza...

DawnMumsnet · 26/03/2016 11:45

Hear, hear.

This thread seems to have been started with a number of threads in mind, not just the 3pm Good Friday one.

We'd be really grateful if we could get this thread back on track now.

Many thanks.

emotionsecho · 26/03/2016 11:49

Bo as Ohfuckaducky has now clearly explained why she thought the title was goady I will leave it as you so politely requested.

StiickEmUp · 26/03/2016 11:51

I want to know if the people who think it's okay to start a thread about a specific poster think that Jesus Christ would have done the same thing.

Turn the other cheek maybe?

No, I think he'd be, and maybe is ashamed.

7Days · 26/03/2016 11:52

What debate though really Bertrand? I think most people would agree that conversations about personal stuff such as religion should be allowed, unimpeded on what is after all just a chat forum.
Discussions in parliament about religion in public life sgould be indepth with input from all stakeholders ie all of us.
As long as no one is being harmed, live and let live.

Don't see how many would disagree with that.

lottielou7 · 26/03/2016 11:55

It doesn't make any difference whether it's religion or not. To tell the OP her feelings about it were invalid was rude and patronising and derailed the thread in the guise of 'concern' which is almost always the reason put forward when actually that's not the reason - the reason is to shut down debate about anything that makes certain posters uncomfortable for whatever reason. It's patronising and that's how it comes across. And it's still happening today.
