Has anyone else noticed the one-liner trolls?

fidel1ne · 06/01/2016 07:41

There's one on the nudist beach thread now and I've noticed them on several threads I've read in the last few days.

I think I remember one on the (since deleted) thread about different ways to assault Peter Connelly's mother and also on the super-glue on the toilet seat thread.

I'm going to have to retrace my steps to find them, I think.

What's it all in aid of?

Oh okay. Report then? Smile

(But FGS someone PM to explain the point of such lax trolling to me Grin )

SouthWestmom · 06/01/2016 11:40

'I'm appalled by your thread'

You think that's a troll? Dear god we are becoming sensitive little flowers in here aren't we. What with that and the cries of GF for anyone disagreeing with accepted view on benefits, council houses, mothers in law etc I'm surprised we haven't turned into a haven of ticker tapes and emoticons...

DropYourSword · 06/01/2016 11:45

Really? Sometimes I give very long answers. Sometimes I would only write one line. Maybe it IS just someone appalled by a thread.

fidel1ne · 06/01/2016 11:45

Not so much the (brief) content Noeuf as the pointlessness of posting a tiny post consisting of nothing substantive and immediately disappearing again.

Posters addressed that person ('why?' etc) and got no response.

It was only after seeing about 20 similar posts scattered about culminating in nudebot that I began to wonder if they were even reportable.

But if this whinge eventually takes me to slow-cooker doner-kebab recipes and home-made ice-cream, I'll survive Smile

DropYourSword · 06/01/2016 11:46

Or someone making a admittedly pretty poor joke

fidel1ne · 06/01/2016 11:46

But isn't odd to just say that Drop?

What about the one on the nudist beach thread?

OP posts:
Atomik · 06/01/2016 11:48

The example the OP posted is not reportable. It does not test the limits of TOS.

All the same, you get a shitload replies early on with a similar thrust/style and it sets the tone of the thread. It can put people off posting something rather more useful because they worry they might get dog piled by the majority view. People with "spiteful poster" fatigue might move on to a fresh thread because they have had it up to the eyeballs. Or it can decend into a bun fight about the one liners rather than the issue the OP was posting about.

It's an issue. But not one reporting will solve.

More selective tweeting of threads might help ..... eventually.

DropYourSword · 06/01/2016 11:51

Yeah, it's not necessarily helpful, interesting, or noteworthy to the thread, but I don't think it automatically makes someone a troll. I've commented on threads and then not returned to them, so potentially wouldn't respond if someone asked me something. Or if it's a long thread unless people bold posters names or comments they can get missed, as I tend to just read the OPs updates.
But as I say, it could be my misunderstanding of the definition of troll!

Sansoora · 06/01/2016 15:04

There is currently a thread running that's attracted posters who have no previous posting history. There reason for being here are very obvious.

fidel1ne · 06/01/2016 15:13

Something goady?

Koln?

OP posts:
firesidechat · 06/01/2016 15:19

I get what the op means and I have noticed it sometimes. Not sure if I would call then trolls, just rude and cowardly. They post something nasty (usually a one liner) with no explanation of why they feel that way and there is no way of countering their rudeness. It annoys me too.

I sometimes find myself typing "Oh dear" or "flowers op" on threads.

Placemarking while expressing sympathy appropriately is one thing.

What is this; Hmm (from the family tree h/work thread). Profile building?

But if it's okay to report anything sussy, then I will and i'll shut up now Smile

That's depressing,I hope those were her own photographs she posted!

fidel1ne · 06/01/2016 16:14

That's what I just said isn't it Maryz?

You're placemarking but you are dressing it up as something appropriate?

What point did I miss?

What is a troll please?

caravanista · 06/01/2016 16:21

Oh dear! I've never started a thread but I do sometimes post brief (possibly harsh) replies if I strongly disagree with a poster. I rarely come back to them because I'm not interested in debating issues where I think the OP is clearly wrong. I also try to offer helpful advice where I can. I'm definitely not a troll!

fidel1ne · 06/01/2016 16:23

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=troll

Several definitions there^ Born.

I'm not going to attempt my own Smile

DropYourSword, I wasn't attempting to define trolls. There are all sorts of trolls. What the op is commenting on is a peculiar subsection of trollery. We all post single lines sometimes. We can be curt sometimes. But we're responding to that situation within a host of parameters. There are a group of posters who post with the sole intention of winding people up. It's weak trolling I grant you. It's wishy washy, irritating and goady. Nevertheless, it's posting in order to incite a reaction. It's really common in AIBU.

I've noticed a pattern in baby names recently but wasn't sure if there was a troll. Is it the one where an OP comes up with two names that they know will cause a bun fight I.e "can't decide between Kai and Jayden for my DS" then stands back, lobbing the odd offended comment in now and then.

TheChippendenSpook · 06/01/2016 17:14

Sometimes I post very short replies but I can assure you I'm not a troll. I'm either busy or can't think of much to add.

I don't post goady things though! I'm generally quite nice (if I do say so myself) Grin
