I thought the Scenic ad was meant to be capped at once a day?

Because it's jumped out at me a dozen times today and it's really getting on my nerves! I'm not rolling over it, it just springs out across the screen every time I come back to MN.

on my browser it is particularly annoying - even when it goes back to the side it leaves the area it had covered as a blank space. And it definitely comes up more than once per day.

ComeOyefaithfulVeneer · 04/12/2006 19:26

WWb it does exactly the same as it does to you, I hate it.

WigWamBam · 04/12/2006 19:30

It's really getting up my nose today! Some days it only happens a couple of times, but today it's jumped out at me every time I've come back to the PC. It's fine while I'm here, but if I go away for long enough for my screen saver to come on, it's back again when I come back.

Lucycat · 05/12/2006 12:08

so what have I clicked on that means I don't get it at all.... ever?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 05/12/2006 12:09

Get an ad blocker!

WigWamBahhumbug · 05/12/2006 12:15

I disabled my ad blocker because it blocked everything - I couldn't get onto some sites at all because of it and it was causing more problems than it was worth.

I don't mind the ads on the whole, and it's good revenue for MN. Most of them disappear into the background after a while anyway. But I do mind when these spreading adverts that are meant to be capped to once a day activate every time I try to get onto active convos.

Lucycat · 05/12/2006 12:18

Just enabling the pop up blocker should work, shouldn't it?

JustineMumsnet · 05/12/2006 12:18

Hi there,
The Renault ad is definitely capped to open once per day. Of course this won't work if you've disabled cookies because then it won't know if you've already opened it. Could that be the problem?

Here's why we took this ad in bald numbers. For this type - ie expandable overlays - Mumsnet gets paid (net of all fees to the folks who run it for us) about £9 for every thousand pages it appears on. By comparison the fee for a regular (ie non expandable) ad works out on average at under £2.
We did also run it by folks first on site stuff and almost everyone who responded said it would be alright to give it a go.

It would be nicer, we agree, not to have any ads like this (in fact it would be nice not to have any at all) but we do have (quite a lot of) costs to meet and I guess we have to accept some level of commercialism if we are to keep Mumsnet free to use. We agree, though, that it's a fine balancing act and we do turn away a lot of pop-up type stuff plus a number of businesses who we know you'd rather not see on Mumsnet. Do continue to let us know your thoughts, though, it's always helpful when it comes to weighing up these things.
Best,
MNHQ

I haven't disabled cookies. It's only started doing this over the past couple of days having been fine before, and I haven't done anything to the PC.

I'm generally not unhappy with adverts - I appreciate that they bring in a good revenue and usually anything that keeps MN going is fine by me ... but this one is doing my head in at the moment!

WhyDooLittleStarsShine · 05/12/2006 12:23

I haven't seen this ad atall

Is this because I'm not using Explorer?

JustineMumsnet · 05/12/2006 12:24

Hi WWB - I'll definitely check with the folks who serve our ads whether they've changed anything but it's only coming up once per day for us and we certainly haven't told them to serve it more often than that. Has anyone else found it's appearing more than once?

By lemonaid on Thursday, 16 November, 2006 9:45:39 AMThe basic idea is to trick your PC into thinking that all those files are stored locally, so that it tries to find them on your own PC and just gives up when it can't find them, rather than downloading them every time. So that's what you do by editing the hosts file.

DISCLAIMER: Always backup your existing hosts file first. And while this works fine for me it is not my responsibility if it causes your computer to collapse into a pile of green dust... proceed at your own risk.

  1. Find your hosts file (at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts for Windows XP)
  1. Mine has a very long list with lots of known adservers in it so that I block most ads anywhere (would be happy to email to anyone who CATs me) but I believe the specific line you need to add (under the line that says "127.0.0.1 localhost") to block the Mumsnet ads is

127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de

  1. Save hosts file
  1. Restart browser (you might also need to reboot the PC, I'm not sure)

it works

WigWamBahhumbug · 05/12/2006 12:26

Thanks Justine. I'll check with dh to make sure he hasn't done anything daft but I don't think he's been on the PC for a couple of weeks (he never gets the chance!).
