Have just received a notification from another forum I use that someone has tried to log into my account there. 5 times and my username has now been disabled.

I have a completely different username and password there. Although they'd have found it terribly boring as it's a very specific forum!

Wasn't on "the list" here as far as I could see.

Thought someone should know.

He's sitting like Dr Evil stroking his French Lop watching MN go down.

I don't think it's his French lop he's stroking...

The thing is, jeff stole the details, but the details were then published on twitter....so fuck knows who got them and started poking around to see what they could do.

That doesn't explain happenings to people not on the list though.

There's no significance really about the list. He chose to publish it but there is no way of knowing he only had the passwords/e-mail addresses of people on it.

If anything that might be a bluff and he has no interest at all in users who logged in with name and password

I was on it. I log in using name not email. The email linked to it MN was an ancient account that attracts mainly spam these days and has nothing else of relevance. New one is for MN only.

I have 5 different email accounts from a mixture of providers all with different passwords and I use them randomly for Web-sites. . It's a pain remembering them all so I use an address book which has nothing but passwords in it.

Of course the address book itself has to be kept safely as it's got lots of useful information. If we're away from home for any more than a few days it gets locked in my office desk.

Also, peoples accounts are hacked all the time. People get dodgy pop ups all the time. A lot (all?) of the seemingly unconnected happenings will be actually unconnected. Everyone is hyper aware at the moment, and is attributing anything slightly out of the usual to Jeffrey.

Simurgh · 22/08/2015 09:41

Yes, I think they probably are. Generally increased levels of awareness on internet security can only be a good thing for users though - it's just a shame that MN and its staff and users had to be the fall guys for it.

I look forward with interest to a future MN webchat on the topic.

"A lot (all?) of the seemingly unconnected happenings will be actually unconnected. Everyone is hyper aware at the moment, and is attributing anything slightly out of the usual to Jeffrey."

I think that's very true. We have no idea about the typical number of weird incidents and attempted attacks on a population the size of MN that are going on all the time anyhow.

Anonymous34 · 22/08/2015 11:25

Quite - and so when a person of ill intent decides to claim responsibility for certain attacks, (though we know those were him as he did it in advance of the incidents) he will thence receive by default, credit for any other internet or email related iffyness that takes place around the same time.

Which I'm sure makes him feel even more important than he already does.

Anonymous34 · 22/08/2015 11:27

For example, I had food poisoning last night.

It did mean I was able to be vigilant for armed police, which was useful Smile but it also meant I questioned whether it could somehow have been Jeffrey's fault.

I concluded that no, it could not Grin

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 22/08/2015 11:33

YY Last night I went to get me some Wine that was in the fridge but the bottle was suspiciously empty.

I blame Jeffrey. Hmm

twirlypoo · 22/08/2015 11:57

Jeffrey is a bastard. My wine was gone too Shock

I think we have stumbled upon his real aim in all this - distract us and keep us locked to our computers so he can sneak in and steal goodies from our fridge. That cad!!!!!
