Someone has tried to log into my account on another forum

Have just received a notification from another forum I use that someone has tried to log into my account there. 5 times and my username has now been disabled.

I have a completely different username and password there. Although they'd have found it terribly boring as it's a very specific forum!

Wasn't on "the list" here as far as I could see.

Thought someone should know.

Did you use the same Email address as here?

ClareDeLune · 21/08/2015 09:01

Yes but different passwords.

I'm guessing you sign in using your email address rather than your Username?

I have suspected they kept all the people who signed in with Emails frombeing published becuase they are more useful with other sites.

RepeatAdNauseum · 21/08/2015 09:14

An old username of mine was on the list and I sign in with my email address.

steppemum · 21/08/2015 09:16

people keep talking about 'the list'
is there a list we should look at??

or if you were on the list you were notified?

Very confused

AuntieStella · 21/08/2015 09:24

Yes, if you were on the list you were emailed (or should have been).

You can check The List yourself on this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/2452645-THE-LIST

ClareDeLune · 21/08/2015 09:29

I was emailed on two separate email addresses although I really don't remember giving the second one to MN.

Will have to try and remember any accounts using the email address and change the password. I've probably got loads, and have used various passwords.

I wasn't emailed at all. I also haven't had to log out and change my password yet.

Interesting.

Someone logged into my Amazon account a couple of days ago. (Am on THE LIST) and filled up my basket with £70 of random DVDs. Shock Luckily my disorganisation worked in my favour on this occasion as the linked card had expired.

Don't think Amazon would let them send to a new address anyway, but have now changed every single password I have on the Internet just in case.

ClareDeLune · 21/08/2015 09:44

The email from the other forum tells me the IP address of whoever tried to log in. Is this significant? (IT numpty).

Also I've just realised that it's the second email address that has been breached (the one I don't remember giving MN). Maybe we do have to give an alternative when we sign up to MN, I don't remember.

That sounds just like someone playing silly games Gunpowder. They would need the physical card to change addresses to sens them to anyway (IIRC) so I would guess it was a couple of youngsters mucking around and chuckling gleefully while they did it.

Gunpowder · 21/08/2015 11:21

Yeh Simurgh didn't panic too much, but the war DVDs just looked funny alongside books on potty training and breast pads!

Was quite good in a way as it gave me a kick up the bum to improve my slovenly internet ways. Wink

Simurgh · 21/08/2015 11:42

I think that many people will have tightened up their net practice in response to this so that's one good thing to come out of it. I only hope it lasts for a while.

ALassUnparalleled · 21/08/2015 14:43

It's so easy to set up new email accounts. There's a lot to be said for having different addresses for different purposes and keeping different addresses for accounts which involve money and those which are purely social media.

I was using an ancient email address for MN which isn't used for anything I now care about.

I've now got a new email account (in the cat's name) with entirely fictitious name, gender, postcode and dob just for MN

StephanieBeacham · 21/08/2015 14:47

I don't know but if you could email that information to [email protected] with URGENT TECH in the subject line they may have a use for it.

suzannefollowmyvan · 21/08/2015 15:17

does anyone really give their real info when they open an e-mail account?

I never have

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2015 15:22

does anyone really give their real info when they open an e-mail account?

Depends how much you care if you lose access.... If the provider has some real info that both you and they know you are far.more likely to be able to get your account back if you are locked out/hacked etx

(Or at least keep track of the false info you signed.up with)

Why wouldn't you use your real info? What's the benefit?

suzannefollowmyvan · 21/08/2015 15:31

companies gather information and sell it on, I'm not going to give it away for free!

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2015 15:34

Fair enough :)

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/08/2015 15:35

Actually, I'm not sure that is right? Say you were using gmail with false name/location/DOB. They'd still be able to collect a vast amount of relevant data on you...

suzannefollowmyvan · 21/08/2015 15:53

yeah, I know ItsAllGoing, it's just a sort of instinct with me to not just obediently fill out forms as if the provider had any kind of right to the information.

Even your use of the phrase using gmail with false name/location/DOB suggests that I would be doing something fraudulent (I dont mean that you were accusing me of doing something fraudulent!)

maybe it's futile but I like to try and defy the 'nothing to hide nothing to fear', 'do as you're told we know best' diktats

PrincessHairyMclary · 21/08/2015 16:08

I was on the list and I had an email from yahoo the next day saying someone had tried to access my account from Russia.

That account was also hacked when Monster job agency was done a few years ago so could have been that although they are welcome to it it only has shopping newsletters sent to it

StephanieBeacham · 21/08/2015 16:40

I don't think it's this sad hacking chap sitting there doing all this. If there are any follow on issues from the hack, it's probably because other organisations that misuse data in this way have got hold of the information, either by paying for it or by copying it off the internet when it was visible to all.

It isn't Jeff personally trying to get involved in your accounts. I hope that's correct.

ClareDeLune · 21/08/2015 22:04

Well if it is Jeff, he's going to be disappointed when he finally manages to log into the rabbit forum and see my posts about rabbit housing and toys.

Knock yourself out Jeff :)

twirlypoo · 21/08/2015 22:09

Ooh someone on another thread was saying their guinea pig forum account was attempted to be broken into recently as well. I wonder if it's the same forum, of Jeff has a love of small pets or something?
