Not sure if it should go next to Sport or Exercise but there seems to be some interest based on This thread. Please if anyone reading would support it, post here to let MNHQ know how much interest there is. Names for it also welcome... the 'Weights Room' maybe?

Thanks Dawn. It would really appreciated, I think it would help us who feel there aren't places on the internet for us and even lead other members to try it for themselves.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 12/04/2015 17:00

There are many topics that exist but no one uses them. So why the hostility towards the weights, which I'm sure it'll be be used either frequently by few moderately by erm, moderate amount of people Grin Or both.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 12/04/2015 17:55

OR moderately... Hmm

MintPink · 12/04/2015 18:05

Yes please!

TheHoundsBitch · 12/04/2015 18:10

Yes please!

MerryKat · 12/04/2015 18:21

I'm interested in weights thread!

shewept · 12/04/2015 18:50

I find it a bit confusing when people wander into a thread asking for a new topic to say why they think mn shouldn't create it.

Does it really bother people if a new topic appears that they don't use? There are loads I don't use.

BigChocFrenzy · 12/04/2015 22:39

A weightlifting topic might also make lifting a bit more mainstream for Mumsnetters.
I organise the 5:2 exercise thread and although I posted lots of info about lifting and its health benefits, most women seem more comfortable with running, swimming and yoga. It's an image / cultural issue, I think.

I'd love more visibility and acceptance of strong women doing proper pressups and thinking beyond girlie pink dumbbells, together with advice & encouragement for those just starting out on weights.
Yes, a specialist topic could get more women lifting.

ElizabethHoover · 12/04/2015 22:48

why not a thread on sport?

IronMaggie · 13/04/2015 00:57

I'd be interested in this as a topic too please. I'm on bodybuilding.com and recently joined reddit because they have an active fitness forum, but haven't participated there because it's pretty intimidating to have to learn a whole new set of rules. It'd be good to swap notes on form, routines etc. And there should generally be more strong women around too! Wink

NoArmaniNoPunani · 13/04/2015 01:07

I'm interested in this too

AggressiveBunting · 13/04/2015 01:34

Maybe do a bit of a reorganisation to establish a sports and exercise category with sub topics underneath it- currently exercise is in "health" so hard to find, whilst weight loss has a whole category to itself with sub-topics under it. My proposal would therefore be

New category: Sport and Exercise (with catchy title natch)

Sub-Topics: Running, Lifting, Home exercise (shred, insanity, Davina etc), Gym, Triathlon, ball sports, could bring the tack room under this category as well if they wanted. Not saying this is definitive but these are the sports I see talked about most.

Threads then created within these topics.

shewept · 13/04/2015 07:03

It's an image / cultural issue, I think

100% agree with this.

And agree entirely with Agressive sports and exercise should have a topic of its own with sub topics within it.

shewept · 13/04/2015 07:05

Also there has been alot in the news about young girls not wanting to do sport and exercise for many social reasons. The best way to get girls into it is for them to see the women around them actually doing it. Imo there should be a lot more focus on exercise, than there currently is. Especially since this forum has such a focus on weight loss. Imo its an unbalanced view.

SinclairSpectrum · 13/04/2015 07:17

Yay, yes please!!!!
I regularly lift but am reliant on male colleagues or random strangers at the gym to help me out with new ideas or techniques.
All those in favour raise a glass of protein shake and flex your guns!!!

Sirzy · 13/04/2015 07:21

I agree she wept, and with the current "this girl can" campaign it would be a great time to show just what mums (and women in general) can do.

I think a proper sports and exercise board would be fantastic.

ElizabethHoover · 13/04/2015 07:27

So a total topics reorganisation for one theme that hasn't even got a long running thread of its own?

shewept · 13/04/2015 07:41

Elizabeth Yes. Except there are lots of long running threads in exercise for all different sports and this will cover them all. Not sure why this bothers you so much. You have the option of hiding topics.

This website has a huge section for weight loss. Why not the equivalent for exercise. There is a social problem of women concentrating too much on what they eat and not enough on exercise. The 'this girl can' campaign is attempting to tackle the problem about girls shying away from sport.

If we can have a whole topic with sub topic for different diets, why not one exercise? Why does the 5:2 deserve its own topic but a sport doesn't. It doesn't make sense.

Sirzy · 13/04/2015 08:14

Also, the problem with long standing threads is they can be difficult to keep up with, things can be missed and new posters don't alway want to just jump in.

Separate boards makes it more accessible for everyone and means people who are just dipping their foot into the sport have somewhere they can ask their inital questions.

sleepwhenidie · 13/04/2015 08:36

I agree Sirzy, most people don't have time or want to trawl through pages of long running single topic threads to see if their question has already been addressed and they can seem cliquey (though usually aren't). Much easier to look through a topic list of different queries on the subject.

I don't understand the resistance to more topics (or a reorganisation) either, what difference does it make for users who can hide or ignore those they aren't interested in Confused? I don't hide any particular topics but I probably ignore more than 60%, it doesn't affect my use or enjoyment of MN!

ElizabethHoover · 13/04/2015 08:59

no one has even tried using exercise.... try that first

It doesnt bother me.. its a web forum where people post opinions Hmm

sleepwhenidie · 13/04/2015 09:06

There are threads on lifting in exercise Elizabeth but they are lost in between all the other threads, hence the request....Hmm. If someone wants to talk about, say, using and comparing different protein shakes and someone else about how to focus on technique with deadlifts, these could be anywhere within a long thread or indeed list of short (or missed) separate threads in Exercise.

OP posts:
BIWI · 13/04/2015 09:13

Why are so against it, Lizzie?! Wink

It would be like telling all my Bootcamp posters to just post in 'weight loss' instead - amongst the million other threads about low calorie/Lighter Life/Slimming World threads.

Much easier to find what you're looking for if it has a dedicated thread.

shewept · 13/04/2015 09:32

So why isn't weight loss just one topic? Post you opinion and we will answer. Its a public forum. Having the topic doesn't affect you, so why bothered?

We have a thread in exercise. All of whom are saying we struggle to find somewhere to ask the many questions we want to and share experiences and advice.

Having a huge topic for losing weight through diet but not an equivalent exercise is not good. And goes to show that the studies are right women shy away from exercise. Its shouldn't be that way.

ElizabethHoover · 13/04/2015 09:33

get you and your posters Wink
