Adverts in mobile site

Have the adverts in the mobile site changed to being along the top and 'floating' as you scroll down the page? I thought they were changed to being distributed through the page, every 6 or so threads. I find it really annoying to have them at the top of the screen constantly.

Hello all,

Sorry to send conflicting messages but there was a small misunderstanding on Monday night. The advert at the top and scrolling with the page is a deliberate change. However, it should not float around the middle of the screen nor cover your message box. We fixed that asap at the beginning of the week so hopefully no one is experiencing that now.

As some of you know we've been trying out different ways of advertising on Mumsnet mobile. We do need to take adverts and we're trying to find a way of balancing the need to include adverts and highlight other mumsnet content and not wanting to interfere with mumsnetting.

We've tried out two ways so far, the fixed scrolling ad at the top and the ads in between posts. The reactions have been very evenly split and now we're trying fixed again for a short time to measure impact.

We'll also be trying some ways of showcasing other content which we hope people will find useful or interesting over the next couple of weeks.

As ever we're really interested in your feedback so any thoughts are welcome.

The main problem for me is that my screen size is tiny so an ad stuck at the top does really affect my ability to ise the site while mobile. It wasn't too much of a problem when the ads are between the posts, I still see them but they don't block my view.

SoonToBeSix · 21/11/2014 13:08

The ads in the middle were fine, the ads at the top are awful.

EveryGoodBoyDeservesFun · 21/11/2014 13:20

Oh no, the ads at the top are dreadful. Especially the ones that move and are brightly coloured. I had got used to them in the middle of threads and really didn't mind them, but I'll not be going on MN as much on my mobile if this is the case. Sorry, this is the one thing I really struggle with with the new mobile site.

I understand you need to take ads, that really isn't an issue, but on smaller screens the fixed ad at the top is just too intrusive. Please go back to between posts!

I much much prefer them in between at the top is far too intrusive for me. I hate it sorry.

ophiotaurus · 21/11/2014 13:36

Plus the Venus one doesn't load up on my phone properly (iPhone 5s Safari latest iOS).

It's kind of half way down in its little rectangle at the top.

IneedAwittierNickname · 21/11/2014 14:04

I prefer them at the top (like to be different) but it stays right at the very top and disappears when I type.

IneedAwittierNickname · 21/11/2014 14:35

Mine move down the page so it is always there but stays at the very top of the page iyswim

The trouble with the 'fixed' ad is that it doesn't stay fixed. And neither do the navigation buttons. The ads between posts moved smoothly with the posts, but the fixed ads jerk and float over the posts, creating a very unpleasant 3-d flashing effect. When I scroll down the ad appears to pull down over the posts, before snapping back up to the top; and when I scroll up the nav buttons do the same in reverse, appearing to pull up over the posts, before snapping back down to the bottom. The nav buttons did not do this with the other style of ad.

It really is unpleasant. I could just about tolerate the greatly reduced screen-size caused by these two obstructions, but the hovering and snapping is truly nauseating.

TeenyfTroon · 22/11/2014 08:09

I wrote a post yesterday on why I prefer ads between posts. God knows what's happened to it so I'll just say again that I HATE the ads at the top.

happygirl87 · 22/11/2014 08:12

Just for balance, can I say I much prefer the top of the screen ones?! When they were between posts I was forever clicking on them by mistake as I scrolled!

Slowdownsally · 22/11/2014 08:21

I hate them at the top as well and much preferred them in the middle Of posts.

As it is now, I've got ads at the top and bottom of threads and it can take up the whole page.

On active convos, I can see maybe 1.5 post titles with the rest of the screen dominated by ads and then the pop up blue bar at the bottom.

It's so difficult to use the mobile site now as all the content is covered up with with ads and menu buttons.

wiltingfast · 22/11/2014 10:22

Oh my god I cannot BELIEVE you are contemplating fixed ads again. Where the hell is the thread with all the negative feed back on the ads mixed in with the thread?

The fixed ads are hideously nauseating, never seem to load properly so flicker a lot and take up far too much screen on my phone. I have to scroll constantly to read threads which is also nauseating and tbh I can't generally tolerate any of it for long.Angry

Also they generally cause the site to run slower ime, pages slow to load, lots of blue squares, browser closes “unexpectedly“, ad jumps around before settling at the top and generally whole thing is a PITA

And why are you advertising in german at me???

FluffyRedSocks · 22/11/2014 10:55

The fixed ad at the top is horrid, and draws my eye away from mn when I'm trying to read as they are normally very colourful..
I didn't mind them in the messages, please put them back :(

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 22/11/2014 11:08

@wiltingfast

And why are you advertising in german at me???

Are you in Germany?

Slowdownsally · 22/11/2014 13:27

The ps4 ad that has just flashed up had 5/6 different flashing overlays. It slowed the site down and couldn't load active convos and was totally irritating.

Just an example of why they are so intrusive.

wiltingfast · 22/11/2014 13:42

No OnlyOlivia, I'm in Ireland...

anythingforaquietnight · 22/11/2014 16:05

I hate the ads at the top. Hate, hate, hate, hate, hate it.

Another problem I have with the ads at the top is, since you changed the text to the on-trend, but spindly pale font I really struggle to read it. So I enlarge it. But this also enlarges the advert, so now I can only get about 3 lines of legible text on my phone screen at a time. Not a problem with the ads in the posts, as just scrolled past them.

I'm getting really irritated every time I use the mobile site, and only spending a very short space of time on it before going to find something more user friendly to read.

Please change it back.

How long will it be before you make a decision which format you are going to stick with?

SwedishEdith · 22/11/2014 16:15

The ads at the top are crap. When you click Threads I'm On the ad covers the top post so you have to scroll down to read it. In these tedious culture of Continuous Improvement, this isn't.

wiltingfast · 24/11/2014 13:24

And could someone please explain why this issue is only inflicted on people on phones? The flickering annoying ads disappear out of view as I scroll on the desktop site Angry. Why is it so important mobile users have them in their face at all times??????

LineRunner · 24/11/2014 13:31

This development is awful. Agree with what Tziboleh said.
