Can we clarify something after the Cedar Falls thread deletion?

I really don't want to be argumentative or provocative but would genuinely like to understand how the forum is policed.

Why was the thread about the Cedar Falls breastfeeding debacle deleted - reason given: 'it became very personal' - but a thread titled, for example, AIBU to think that Stephen Fry is a shit? is allowed to stand? Because I would have thought that the latter is actually quite a personal comment as well.

I am genuinely confused about how you decide who it is OK to slag off and who it isn't. Confused

And it "became personal by linking to the FB page" because the OP's supporters invited people to look at her Facebook page, and linked her FB to MN. She bobbed.

Stephen Fry is a celebrity and therefore not a "real person"

Darn it. Spoiled my own pun. She boobed

I think that linking to someone's FB page is too personal.

MN were right to delete. That's how cyber bullying starts and MN was right to take a stand. Too many people were just wading in and it wasn't pleasant.

I had no issues with the deletion.

I don't have issues with the deletion - if deletions are evenhanded in terms of the rationale behind them.

One of my issues with this is that the FB link was to a page which was promoting a business - not a personal FB page but one which is designed to be accessed by the public for the purposes of drumming up custom. And the owner of said page saw no harm in using such a public forum for whipping up support for her personal complaint.

So what pages are we allowed to link to then, if not a page which is accessible to anyone on the internet with a FB account?

Morning all,

We removed that thread as it linked to a personal Facebook page and made the individual identifiable. It was also a pretty nasty thread that became very personal.

We do take a slightly different view about people in the media because they put themselves out there. Having said that, we still don't like folks to be personal and nasty about anyone, if you see posts that overstep the mark please do report and we will take a look.

LeBearPolar · 15/07/2014 15:24

Oh OK. I only saw the link to the business FB page in the OP which didn't have the individual's name on - just the name of her company as far as I could see. I wasn't aware that someone had subsequently linked to the personal page of the person in question as well. Although it's probably a good warning to her to sort out her privacy settings if her personal profile could be accessed by all and sundry on MN.

I think that the Stephen Fry post is riddled with nasty posts about him. I too have been in mind to report the entire thread.

settingsitting · 15/07/2014 18:17

Every other post on there is nasty about him.
