Giving Week is here: donate funds to MNer-nominated organisations and MNHQ will match them!

Hello all

As you may remember, a wee while back we asked you to nominate your favourite charities and related organisations for the inaugural Mumsnet Giving Week. Well - the nominations are in, the shortlist has been drawn up and Mumsnet Giving week starts here!

First, a thank you: you suggested an amazing selection of worthy organisations, and choosing just five was, as you can imagine, an astonishingly difficult task. In the end, though, we settled on the following:

Women's Aid
Free Cakes for Kids
Woolly Hugs
Haven House
PDA Society

As of now, the Yimby and Just Giving fundraising pages are ready to take your donations. And remember, we’ll be matching whatever money you raise, up to the combined total of £25k (we thought we’d better set some sort of limit in case one of you turns out to be fabulously wealthy and decides to drop a million quid - which would, of course, be amazing, but might leave us scrabbling around a bit come payday Grin)

We’re mindful that most of you won’t be able to donate large amounts, of course - but small amounts are extremely welcome! And if you’d like to help out in other ways (we really don’t want anyone to feel bad about not being able to donate), we’d be very grateful for any noise you can make via Facebook, Twitter etc etc: the best place to link to to explain the whole project is here and the hashtag is #MumsnetGiving.

Thanks very much - here’s to raising lots of money for some brilliant causes.

Thanks Justine.

Women's Aid's only just over half its target ... nudge!

JulesJules · 09/06/2014 12:55

Thank you for making up the difference for Free Cakes for Kids - me and the dds pledged twice for this one because we were worried they wouldn't reach the target and so would not get anything. (My 12yo has offered her birthday money, )

Also I was only able to get onto the page this morning - couldn't get onto it at all over the weekend.

Bump for Women's Aid!

So many MN-ers have benefitted from advice and refuge having been advised on the Relationship Board to contact them.

They are a life saver.

An actual life saver.

Everyone at MNHQ you are wonderful people Thanks

I think Free Cakes For Kids is a wonderful idea, and didn't want them to miss out.

Aw I missed all this since I haven't visited MN for a long time. I've had a few ribenas so I'm a bit teary eyed now as all five of those charities look very worthy indeed. My personal favourite is the birthday cakes for kids. I'm not really in the position to donate cash (I could probably do a few quid, surely, and I might) but I want to join in somehow. I'm bored in the evenings and looking for a hobby but I want it to be productive. So far I've been a bit nonplussed and put off by the apparent boringness of knitting, crocheting and embroidery, but if I could get involved in perhaps something like the square knitting/crocheting that I've read about on here, I'd really like to go for it. I'll root about for a relevant thread somewhere, unless someone can link me to it?

I must say, I live in Sweden, so I'm not able to attend anything in the UK, but I'd love to give my support postally somehow, and I'd have no problem absorbing the costs of postage as I'd feel that I was doing something useful to someone, even if I was just helping someone else give more to charity.

GermyElephant · 19/06/2014 06:14

Crochet is amazing, so not boring! If you're on Facebook then check out the MNWoollyHugs page there. They also have their own section here in Body and Soul.

jaynebxl · 19/06/2014 06:35

Come on over to the dark side Boomer. Crochet is dead trendy these days and ever so slightly addictive

Boomerwang · 19/06/2014 19:57

Right I shall take a look as soon as I'm back in Sweden!

jaynebxl · 19/06/2014 22:33

Boomerwang are you Jac Naylor?!

Boomerwang · 20/06/2014 00:36

no, I have never nc.

jaynebxl · 20/06/2014 06:20

Sorry boomerwang, it was a joke... I just watched Holby where a character called Jac just left to gk to Sweden then I read your post about when you get back to Sweden...
