Hi all,

From today we're introducing an additional way to log into Mumsnet using Facebook and Google.

You'll most likely have seen the social sign-in option on other websites - it means if you're already logged into Facebook/Google, you can use that log in to get onto Mumsnet without having to remember another.

We know lots of folks have concerns about preserving their anonymity on Mumsnet but to be clear this will in no way compromise that. Key points to note are:

You absolutely don't have to use this function unless you want to; the usual log-in procedure is still in available to everyone.
Your Mumsnet nickname and your real-life name will never be linked.
Your Facebook friends will not know you're on Mumsnet.
We will never post on your Facebook page.
As per our T&Cs we would never pass on your data outside of MN without your express permission

We've shown this feature to and received some useful feedback from a number of Mumsnet regulars, who kindly looked it over for us Thanks and as a result have come up with a list of FAQs

If you have any questions or concerns, then please do ask and any feedback on this is, as always, welcome

@Twit

Will this make it easier for trolls and/or sock puppets? Genuine question as I know nothing about these things.

We've got a bit about this in the FAQs:

Aren't you just opening Mumsnet up to trolls and spamming?

It doesn't really make it easier for trolls to spam us. If anything it's harder. Have you tried signing up for Facebook or Google recently?! They want a ton of info before you can create an account.
It's easier to just register on Mumsnet regular like. It's true they could use an existing account and that would be easier (just as it is for genuine users) but would a troll want to associate an existing account?

@ApocalypticBlackHorseman

I can see people who don't choose to log in with these new methods being more easily accused of being a troll to be honest. I'm not in favour at all.

That's not our intention Apocalyptic - it really is just about making it easier for people to log in, from our POV. We don't have any preference for which method folk use.

@PlentyOfPubeGardens

I don't like the idea of this. I trust MN with my data but not google!

The email I used to register with MN is also associated with a google account. I would like some reassurance that it would not be possible to accidentally or automatically log in to MN using my google account.

I've just had a test: if you log out and then scroll down (while logged out) to the 'Write message' box, you'll see a big multi-coloured box that (hopefully) makes it very clear which method you're using to log in.

If you choose 'Google' (as I just did for the first time) you have to go through a two-step confirmation process. (And it will only work if your Gmail address is the email address you have registered with us.)

So it's really difficult for anyone to sign in using Google or Facebook by accident.

@Twit

I just wondered if someone could sign in through different means under a different NN each time? If it were a truly dedicated troll, as some are, they would think nothing of setting up fake accounts, in fact it might make it seem more legit?

It's possible - but then it's possible for trolls to have multiple accounts already. If someone is posting from multiple accounts on a thread, we have ways of seeing that - this process won't make that less obvious to us at MNHQ, we think.

We won't attach more 'value' (in credibility terms) to accounts that have Facebook accounts linked; we'll take a beady look at people who get reported, as always.

@ApocalypticBlackHorseman

Thanks Rowan, forgive me for being a cynic....

No worries!

@PlentyOfPubeGardens

Log out?? Shock

Thanks, that's good to know.

Well OBVS we don't recommend it. EVER.

@ProfessorSkullyMental

will the current spate of facebook hacking thats been going on leave people who use that way to log in vulnerable?

If you fear your account on Facebook has been hacked you should definitely follow their advice and up your security, change your password etc. You can also de-authorise MN within your Facebook settings if you think you've been compromised. For those that are worried, there are extra security steps you can put in place for Facebook that will alert you if suspicious activity has gone on.
