I think I've just been a total idiot...I've been conned, haven't I?

I was on mumsnet when this happened about 10 minutes ago...a page popped up saying that I had been randomly selected from 'active conversations' to complete a questionnaire, and that I would be awarded a free gift.

I then answered 4 very basic questions which led to another page where I could select 1 of three free gifts.

The options were 1) a sin cream, 2) a £50 voucher or 3) 'Slim Body Cleanse'

I chose option 3, and then filled in my name, address and bank card details [blush.]

Have any other mners had experience of this?

Could MNHQ confirm if this is an official survey sanctioned by MN, or if it is indeed a con, as I suspect.

TIA

Why would anyone need your bank card details for a free gift?

Sorry but it sounds like a con to me.

Llareggub · 13/01/2014 22:33

That's awful. Get in touch with your credit card pronto.

I think you should report your post so MNHQ pick it up.

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 13/01/2014 22:36

Yes, report and call your cc company.

It does sound like a scam.

AnyFucker · 13/01/2014 22:36

Oh no !. Please report this to HQ and contact your bank first thing tomorrow. You might want to consider cancelling your card. You poor thing x

KeepNaanAndCurryOn · 13/01/2014 22:45

You can cancel your card tonight. Contact your bank now on their list or stolen line before you find yourself screwed in the morning.

CatherineMumsnet · 13/01/2014 22:47

Hi OP, can you report this to us? We need to look at it ASAP and then we'll post on this thread to clarify - sound ok?

CatherineMumsnet · 13/01/2014 22:48

MN surveys would either be stickied in active convos or promoted on the home page. As far as I'm aware we'd never do a survey on a pop up page. HTH

AnyFucker · 13/01/2014 22:48

Yes, to clarify, cancel your card now and contact your bank tomorrow for a new one.

JaquelineHyde · 13/01/2014 22:49

I would be on to your credit card company now cancelling the card before you are cleaned out.

Misfitless · 13/01/2014 22:49

Thanks for taking the time to respond everyone.

How do I report it Catherine?

OP posts:
Vatta · 13/01/2014 22:50

Scam. Cancel your card!

AnyFucker · 13/01/2014 22:50

OP, press the report button to the right of the blue line. Will do it for you.

Vatta · 13/01/2014 22:50

Have just reported your post for you, hopefully mnhq will be in touch soon

Cindy34 · 13/01/2014 22:51

I doubt mumsnet ever does popups. As adverts are served from various sources, an expanding ad is possible.

I wonder if it was random chance and something triggered a trogan that had been dormant on your system. Run anti-malware scan, then anti-virus scan.

Misfitless · 13/01/2014 22:51

The bank details were for the postage and package costs which were about £1.99/£2.99.

I can't believe I've been so gullible.

It was with it popping up when I was on mumsnet, and the reference to the 'active conversations.'

SnakeyMcBadass · 13/01/2014 22:51

Oh gawd. Agree it must be a scam. Do cancel your card immediately. Did it look official? Use MN typeface etc?

KeepNaanAndCurryOn · 13/01/2014 22:54

Oh crikey, it's easy to be caught off-guard when you're on a trusted site. You need to call your bank though ASAP.

Misfitless · 13/01/2014 22:58

Thanks for all the advice.

I've reported it to mn as suggested, and am now going to let my DH have a look at my laptop and run anti-virus software etc as someone else suggested.

Am about to cancel my card.

Have you called your bank yet?

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 13/01/2014 22:59

Cancel your card, but make sure you explain why too. They can stop that transaction I expect.

Misfitless · 13/01/2014 23:25

Yes, I've cancelled my card now and explained why.

To be honest I don't think I'd have done it half as quickly if it hadn't been for all the 'immediately....asap....right now' messages from you all, so thank you so much.

My DH had only just come in, as I was getting all the messages, and whilst I was on the phone, he went on some website I've never heard of which lists scams that people have reported, and this one was on it!

Thanks for the heads up though. I'd probably fall for this too. Bit Hmm that it's managed to latch itself onto Mumsnet. Perhaps they need to adjust their own security settings?

KateSMumsnet · 14/01/2014 11:17

Hi Misfitless

Really sorry this has happened to you. We'd just like to reiterate that official Mumsnet surveys won't appear as a pop up, and we certainly won't ask for any card details.

If anyone comes across any thing on MN that you think looks dodgy, please do take a screen shot and send it to us. We're always happy to take a look and verify stuff, but in general, if in doubt, do nowt.

We'll alert Tech to this, and see if there's anything they can do.
